Guile General Discussion: Go home and be a family man

I just use the no-shimmy shimmy:

That kinda makes sense. If the engine is just sending all inputs down the pipe, then mashing could create packet contention. Hopefully Capcom is aware of this and mends it (all they’d need to do is some flood control on each client before the packets leave).

Could you post any situations you’ve encountered where this is the case (so I can do some testing)? I’ve only ever had trades when I do my fk too early.

I’m probably just doing it too early too but that’s not really my issue. The issue I have is that there are times when it trades and they get far more damage from the trade than the flash kick.

Well, I still have trouble against Mika. Especially punishing her cr.HP, I would appreciate some tips. I just think she has much better tools to get in than other grapplers like Laura.

Light FK trades a lot for me too. I remember playing against a Bison and his jump fierce always traded with my fk in his advantage.

The key is definitely timing as he is completely invulnerable during FK.

Always try to stay out of her cr.HP range, you can’t really punish it unless she does it point blank, so you have to block and eat mixups, or V-reversal it.
Neutral jumping whenever you’re in her cr.HP/sweep range can punish her heavily as well. But this depends on the player, a good Mika will be able to punish your neutral jump with her EX AA special.

Never challenge her on wakeup, it’s never worth the risk, especially when you have her cornered, just keep zoning her out. I see a lot of Guile players losing the game/round just because they decided to meaty her on wakeup, despite having a big lifelead.

EDIT: Also, make sure you go for max punish (st.HP) whenever she does EX Armor or Sweep.

Eh? What’s the problem with applying pressure on wake-up. I’m under the impression she doesn’t have anything she can wake-up with.

She can wake up with EX peach. But I don’t think you should just let her wake up for free either. Zoning all day is something I do against Gief, because his SPD range is huge and Guile can easily keep him out anyway. Mika is a completely different beast.

I think I should try to whiff punish her cr.HP, but that’s something I still need to practice.

ex.peach doesn’t get armour until the 3rd frame, so solid oki will always beat it.

Yup. Just all about perfecting that meaty timing. I’m pretty sure that meaties are only an issue in this game because the wakeup animation is really odd. It’s like an optical illusion that makes you think you can hit them earlier than you’re actually allowed to.

You don’t have a reason to be in Mika’s face, so why would you? You’re better off positioning yourself to a more advantageous spot.
She has a 3f jab, 3f EX Armor move, slide to go under booms etc. And all Mika needs is 1 hit to win the game, even when she’s cornered, so by applying pressure you make it easier for her to land a hit.

You obviously don’t want to be predictable, so you should dash in, throw, poke, and jump at her every now and then, but you need to be smart about it and it depends on how your opponent approaches you.
But as a general rule of thumb, don’t feel like you have to pressure her when you score a knockdown, always play like you only have 1 pixel of health left.
That’s how I approach this MU at least, and she’s easily my best MU so far.

But that doesn’t make sense because rollback doesn’t care what your opponent is doing if they can’t actually do anything. Internet lag shouldn’t effect combos at all - in my experience it doesn’t, even impossibly laggy/jumpy games stabilize when someone is getting hit.

in regards to no shimmy-shimmy just keep in mind there are people who late tech in reaction to a standing animation, especially against characters with a weakish throw game. If u stay in crouch block they straight up won’t tech. they’re generally very good players, but it will throw u to suddenly play someone who doesn’t fall for that bait if u make it the standard way you bait throws. i’m speaking from experience.

According to the video it only works on 7 of the characters though??

This forum is seemingly dead but I’d just like to quickly mention that cr.lk, st.mp, fwd.hp target combo is really amazing against dashes that you anticipate from people trying to score a cheap throw/command grab.

I’ve just been confirming jab jab into flashkick if I expect the dash, but I never thought about using that target combo. I’m gonna experiment with that.

If you’re up close trying to tick throw or stagger string an opponent and they just hold back and walk out of your pressure because they have a fast walk back (namely characters like Vega), what’s the best thing to do with Guile? All I can seem to get from it is a sweep or cr.mk which means knockdown but huge risk or not very much damage. Am I missing something obvious?

Them walking backwards is doing your work for you, just let them back off and go back to your boom game.

But I feel like I should be able to do something more in this situation and I’m just not grasping what it is. Walking back into the boom game isn’t what I want to be doing because I’m obviously going on offence in order to score damage (which could possibly be because I’m at a big life deficit). I have started to go for less meaties and more turtling recently though.

One of the best ways Guile can apply pressure is approaching from behind a boom, if they back off it gives you more space and time to set that up. Guile just isn’t well equipped to apply pressure with normals like Cammy or Ken or Ryu can. If you must press for damage in that situation, I wouldn’t risk a sweep if you’re already at a life deficit. I would just take my low forward and if I’m in range, get the target combo or pop V-Trigger and go into sweep or CA or backfist.
