Well, some mechanics are just refined (or just plain ripped) from other games. As an example, you have slash backs that are similar to 3S parries except cost meter, can’t be done on wakeup, and have a stricter timing. Dead angle attacks are pretty much the same as alpha counters… instant blocks… yeah.
Original mechanics… As far as I know, burst was done first in Guilty Gear? I don’t know of any fighters that did RCs/FRCs before Guilty Gear. There is backdash invulnerability. Faultless defense. ‘Universal’ AA with upper body invulnerability via 6P (sorry testament). Negative penalty (as mentioned before). I wouldn’t be surprised if these have been done before in other games.
Innovations outside of mechanics… I’d say the characters are relatively innovative. When you compare the tools Venom, ABA, Eddie, RoboKy, Jam, etc have, you’ll see that a lot of characters have to unique resources to manage.
I’m not trying to say Guilty Gear is some super innovative game, it just has a lot of interesting mechanics under one roof.
Talking about mechanics, Samurai Shodown 6 has 6 grooves representing 6 games, 2 additional groves, then a groove editor where you can create like six more grooves, you can select various mechanic/features to include (also unique ones that arent in 8 original grooves)
So, Guilty Gear isnt the only one such game
Rage Explosion in SamSho.
Mega Crush in Pocket Fighter.
C-c-c-c-c-combo Breakers in Killer Instinct.
I think the only new thing about Bursts were getting a full super meter for landing one as an offensive move, although I could be wrong.
World Heroes Perfect.
Feinting in every Fatal Fury game from FF3 onward (including Breaking in Garou).
Done previously in like EVERY SNK GAME EVER.
Ultimate Guard in WarZard.
Although GG might have been the first to tie it to the super meter, allowing you to hold it indefinitely as long as you have meter.
Fatal Fury Special.
Later, ABs in the Real Bout games and Garou.
It’s part of the “Vs.” series, they just didn’t put clips of it in. But they did put Garou for KOF.
Oh, I thought he meant Vampire Savior.
Well, good thing I said as far as I know!
Nice list, i played a lot of Samsho2 in the arcades back then, and the game was hype! here in mexico, i respect that game but sadly i don’t know anyone who plays it anymore, im glad it was mentioned on the top list.
Some friends of mine when i linked them the video, asked me, why there is no Dragon Ball, Naruto or Smash game on the list?, i didn’t know how to answer them without hurting their feelings lol…
Virtual Fighter, to be serious never player one… but as i have read on the forums, is the most technical game next to tekken, but it lacks hype.
D-Proto, just go at 2dfighter.com , install the client and get your online SS fix, that I am getting for 6 last years (before 2df I played at kaillera). If you will need more instructions check netplay subforum of my forum http://forum.int13.ru/
meh, since people is throwing their list now, i would throw it mine (note: this is not by preferences, mostly of how i see them as importance to the industry for their contributions)
- SF (doesnt include sf3 cuz is utterly trash)
- VF
- KOF
- GG
- Tekken
- SS
- SC
- MK
- KI
- vs Series (this doesnt include cvs)
lol invincible back dashes are so 1993, mang. GG is a great game series with great characters and mechanics, but I don’t think you are gonna win that one. If anything it has unique combo scaling system. Even meltyblood has more original stuff than that franchise. I never really thought about it but it’s interesting to see how much stuff GG got from FF.
meh i dont care if GG is original about mechanics or not, for me is one of the best games out in the market, and the number 1 in my heart (no homo), btw i always thought that the rc and the frc where completly original of the franchise, maybe im wrong.
the gravity too, btw what is original in meltyblood, im curious
Like Shiki said before RC/FRCs were created in World Heroes Perfect. But yeah, even if GG isn’t really original, it popularized a whole lotta shit and it’s one of the best fighters out there.
Here we go again. May I say that not only GG, but all fighting games in that video were some of best fighters out there?
For melty blood…heat? Maybe? “Shielding” or the parrying works in that game where you can hold out the parry but you can only cancel into specials and use meter for holding it out. If you do time it right like other parries though, it works basically the same. I guess the unique part of shielding could be original.
Any move can cancel to any other move during a combo or blockstring as long as it as the next move being used to cancel your last move hasn’t been used before. I think that is unique too.
These are things I haven’t seen in other games. Probably somewhere there was some fighter I haven’t heard of that used those elements.

I thought Garou was a prequel to Fatal Fury? :xeye:
its the other way around.
