That was a pretty cool list. Definitely thought Tekken would be a lot higher and have VF way lower. I don’t like Smash, but did a list like this would some how include it.

Super Smash Brothers is brought up in an unrelated topic: Check
Thread derails into a Super Smash Brothers debate: Check
Business as usual at SRK.
Why did people bring up smash when it wasn’t even on the list?
I am surprised Samurai showdown was that high on the list.

Surprisingly solid list! Nitpicking aside, they did a great job showing off the diversity in fighting games, especially with the selection of gameplay clips - the IS MAHVEL BAYBEE vid and Urien unblockable setup were my personal faves.
I’d go with 25% popularity and 75% innovation, otherwise Tekken and MK would’ve been higher.

they showed a urien unblockable (well the setup), one of the hardest ones too, and for the specific character its meant for.
also gg > samsho.
GG wasnt revolutionary, it was just flashy and characters were all “unusual” and wacky.
Samsho on other hand was, it is big, it is deep in all directions, and it achieved lots of fighting game cornerstones first, like being first successful weapon fighting (it has 16 years history already), first using special form of blocking-in-last-second that will stun opponent (parry, anyone? Just dont scream SF3 invented that), first using animal companions, first using multi-tiered arenas, first using rage gauge (idea that is now grabbed by other fightings, such as MKvsDC), etc. Also one of the greatest values of Samsho lies in its game universe that bases off alot of historical things and references to different cultures and religions. Other mainstream fightings have in best case a pure fanfic storyline and game universe, or a soap opera like Tekken

I don’t really think that half of that stuff is relevant, but thanks in any case. I had no idea Samurai Showdown had any popularity at all, and was surprised to see it on the list, let alone at number 3.
I don’t think you’re giving much credit to Guilty Gears system if you are just passing it off as ‘flashy’ btw. It did a lot of stuff new, and a lot of stuff right. Sirlin had a good article on some of the basic stuff that just works.
I thought fatal fury was the first to use multi tiered arena. Of course I maybe wrong.
I second that. For the most part, this list is pretty good.
“fighting games are like cockroaches”
Sam Sho was serious business back in the day…
I distinctly remember a review in Gamepro (or all places) for SS2…and it received a perfect score, if memory serves me (maybe it had one 4.5, can’t remember). Plus the SS1 got ported to Sega CD, 3DO, Genesis, and SNES.
And, now the recently released SS Anthology was #31 in all video games a few days ago on Amazon. Pretty crazy for a 16 year old SNK re-release…
Yeah lol i lol’ed when they said that…But its true lol
Just my .02
- SF
- VF
- Vs.
- Tekken
- GG
- KOF
- SC
- SS
- DOA
- KI
- MK
–VF plays better than any other fighter but doesn’t have the hype or personality of other fighters (thought the latter is being amended in VF5:R!!!)
–Smash is not a fighting game. I do hope that it inspires kids to get into real fighting games later.
What exactly did it have that was new?
Take your time and compose a list.
Shooting down your assumptions one-by-one should entertain me for a little while.

off the top of my head, running forward to gain meter & being directly punished by the game for turtling.
gg.
I just got in argument on other forum: People cried that Soul Calibur shouldve been higher than Samurai Shodown (and I guess they havent even tried Samurai Shodown games) so I posted a simple comparison:
Samurai Shodown
-started in 1993
-11 main games
-Spin-offs include RPG iteration, adventure iteration, a slew of portables/mobile phone game (card clash series, various “love sims” like days of memories which has an SS iteration, and Iroha games; plus ports of original games), and now Samurai Shodown Online (an MMORPG) is in development
-more than 90 main characters (thats not including pets and npc chars)
Soul series
-started in 1996
-5 main games
-1 spin-off (adventure game)
-around 58 main characters, many of which “copy” (or started from copying) fighting styles of other characters, while some are just “random style” characters similar to Tekken’s Mokujin
I havent compared storylines (because anyone can say storyline isnt needed for fighting game), but its a well known fact the some of worst storylines in today’s big fighting franchises do belong to Namco, and maybe lesser known fact is that Samurai Shodown carries a ton of references and stuff from real-life culture, mythos and historical events; it has deeper roots in real life things than other fightings do, and has one of most detailed game universes in fightings for today.
Wowwwwwwwwwwwww.
What great innovations.
