I might get some hate for this, but I think KI should be replaced by SSB. Despite what people say, SSB was a fighting game. A very UNCONVENTIONAL fighter, but still a fighter nonetheless. Melee had a huge scene, and was picked up by MLG. Brawl is ass, but Melee took months of practice time to get good at.

SSB should be up there, simply for SSB64 and Melee alone. Lets pretend Brawl never happened.

Super Smash Bros. is a platformer with adversarial elements. It is not a fighting game.

I like how you said “adversarial elements” to avoid saying fighting. People fight in it. It’s a fighting game. This doesn’t mean it’s good or you have to like it, but just because there’s platforms doesn’t mean it’s not a fighting game. It’s not the first game where you can lose by ring out.

Let’s just call Smash a “Platform Fighter” since it’s not the only game of it’s type around (DreamMix TV World Fighters, Jump Stars Series, Guilty Gear Dust Strikers) and be done with it.

"Beat’Em Up "is reserved for games like Double Dragon and Final Fight.

Anyway, perhaps an “Underrated Series” or “Underrated Fighters” list can be produced. I’d stay away from doing a “Worst” or “Overrated” list, doing so brings nothing but pain.

Did you even look at the article? The definition I highlighted is sourced to several published books about game design and history, as well several reputable game websites. It certainly captures what the most gamers and people in the game industry would define as the basic components of a fighting game.

And a “groundless and arbitrary” argument? And “I don’t like Smash, so it’s not a fighting game” isn’t?

For me Smash is not a fighting game…Its a Brawl game(jk)…Its a competitive game for every age group to play…non of those martial arts, hidden techniques and stuff, Its just random pokes that they do that links…Just believe what you think Brawl is…

Great video, it seems they judged about games like 50% popularity 50% overall franchise value, when they did this rating. But I knew which series would be first three even before I watched (first 2D, first 3D, first weapon fightings)

Not a bad list. I’m completely surprised that Samsho and VF got very high. The only problem I had was that KI had no reason to be there (Only 2 games? Not much of a franchise if you ask me. Could’ve been replaced with Fatal Fury). Oh and Tekken and KOF could’ve been higher seeing their international popularity.

Too bad most gamers and people in the game industry don’t really understand what a fighting game is then.
Not surprising, though. Else we’d have a LOT more good American fighting games than we do.

I actually like Smash, especially Brawl, a lot. So too bad you can’t make that argument with me.
I even like Brawl a lot more than some of the disappointing and flawed fighters we’ve gotten recently like SF4 and TvC.
