Any list that doesn’t have SF and Tekken as the top 2 is kidding itself. These are the two games that have done more for the genre and the community. I don’t mean they are the best or even my favorite, but they are the two that people actually play and without these games, our genre would be dead.
If you want to break down the “best.” From a craftsmanship standpoint, VF is #1 and GGXX is #2. Sega-AM2 and Arc puts the most time, care, and thought into balancing and fine tuning their game while trying to innovate. Of course, it is easier to do that when you have 3-5 versions of every VF and 5 versions of GGXX. But since Tekken 5 was released, Tekken has really picked up the slack in fine tuning their franchise.
SNK games should be well represented on either list because SNK has come up with more innovations than any other 2d company. Of course, weather the games are any good or not is a different discussion and I expect to have a million SNK fanboys trying to tell me how amazing SNK games are and how bad Capcom games are :razzy: For the most part the formula has been SNK comes up with a great idea, and another company (usually Capcom, sometimes Arc) gets the fame for it.
MagManiac: I’m not sure why you are so insulted that he compared GGXX and Darkstalkers. The similarities are there. GGXX is pretty much a bastard child of Darkstalkers and Samurai Shodown.
^^Darkstalkers is more like a monster mash. GG is more metal. Get your facts straight.
Shows how much the casual players know…
Aside from Tekken possibly being moved up a little, I think the list has it right for the most part. I would definitely give Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter the top two spots, seeing as VF popularized the 3D fighting genre, and SF popularized the fighting genre as a whole.
It’s kind of sad that the VF series doesn’t get as much love outside of Japan, because in my opinion, it is one of the most technical and balanced series of fighting games around. It’s most likely because in the US Sony’s consoles were far more popular than Sega’s consoles, and thus, many more people have played Tekken here than VF. I used to be a hardcore Tekken fan, but after getting into the VF series, I’ve been more of a VF fan since.
Now if Sega would hurry and make a VF5R console version…

just a reminder since in previous post people talked about how arc used ideas from old snk games, Arc System Works was funded by ex Snk members knew as Team Neo Blood, they made The Last Blade 1 & 2, so imo its not that rare that they used some ideas that we already saw in old snk games
You know that is what I hear. Then again I heard that SvC Chaos was done by Fatal Fury team, so I need more concrete information. WHO exactly are these people, and WHEN they moved around, if that information is present, it’d be a lot easier for me to follow them(more importantly their games).

i dont know if they participated in other games, before the last blade 1 & 2, it could be possible, but i would be laying right now if i say that they made other games with snk
I always thought of GG as a better version of Marvel but without tag team.
(Not even close…)
Is anyone actually angry over GT’s retardation? Their top 10 FPS list is also dumb as fuck: they list story-shooters like DOOM on the list, and refuse to put shooters like Quake 3, Tribes, HL:DM and its mods, and other good FPSes on their top 3 slots, opting to put shitty games like Halo on it. But oh well, game reviewers are usually fucking retarded.
Those guys obviously don’t play enough fighters anyway. I’d put a lot of retarded doujin fighters above a lot of their list. Even Little Fighter 2 (yeah, I said it) is better than some of the fighters they have on that damned list (definitely better than MK).
Somebody missed the point
Somebody should make a petition about how Little Fighter 2 is better than MK, and send it to both GT and Midway ^^
…wasn’t LF2’s community just some Europeans and Israelis on Hamachi? :S
the list is about the games and their contributions to the genre, thats why you se vf over tekken for example, its not about popularity
lol, umk3 might not be balanced but its the most balanced mk game. i dont even have say anything about 3d anime fighters, just read their forums about naruto and dbz.
as for ki2, that game sucks just ask the top ki players. ki 1 was a lot better. i like snes ver more though cinder isnt as broken.
UMK3 might not be balanced but its the most balanced MK game, but MK games dont have much balance to start from
This list is sorta whack, however Tekken should be way higher, Soul Calibur being higher then Tekken in itself is some serious WTF, in fact, other fighters like Samurai Showdown and Guilty Gear being higher then Tekken is wtf. That game has some serious play across the globe, has made a bigger impact then alot of the other games supposedly “better” then it is. Yeah, I’ll admit, Tekken 5 and 6 are quite trashy as a game, however that series deserves a way better placing then what it got, it should be within Top 5 easily.
Also, SNK’s King of Fighter’s series should be top-3 not in the bottom of the 10 group that’s absolute garbage, considering again, what that series has done to the fighting gaming world (if you’ve you haven’t gone outside of the US then obviously you wouldn’t know what I’m talking about). The only two series that would edge it would have been Virtua Fighter and Street Fighter.
Street Fighter being #1 is the absolute truth period, no fighting game caused a bigger stir, caused so many people to quit their jobs, dump their g/f’s or drop their savings $$$ just to play a fighting game. Street Fighter shouldn’t just be in the top FG’s of all time, but also in the Top-3 Video Games of all time on what it brought, it’s gameplay, and it’s sheer impact.
This should be Top 5
- Street Fighter
- Virtua Fighter
- King of Fighters
- Tekken
- VS Series
Btw folks, this list isn’t about “which one is the most strategical or balanced”, if it were the listing would be much different, and no way something like the Marvel series would make it up in Top-10 if “balance” was considered, however glad to see it up there, since that vs series was incredible back in the day.
didn’t some Arc Systems employees work on the Vampire games? :wonder:
i only know that that the team behind GG & BB were ex Snk’s, and that they worked in The Last Blade 1 & 2
doom has a story? :wonder:
i know i heard that they had both ex-snk & ex-capcom employees. maybe i misheard though.
well it could be possible, i dont see why that couldnt happen, they are a game developer company after all, so they need people with experience
