It seems silly to me that the top U.S. players are trying to protect this game by pretending that Phoenix is just another character. I knew Tokido would immediately reach for the most obviously broken character (god bless him for that) and I’m happy that he was good enough with her to force the Marvel community to wake up and address her head on.
Either new, dramatically more effective anti-Phoenix strategies will be developed (unlikely) or Evo will turn into a Phoenix-fest. That being said, if Evo is a Phoenix-fest, I’d rather see one of our guys win it.
All the anti Phoenix strat in the world wouldn’t have helped him. The ONLY match from grand finals that Phoenix had an effect was from game 3 or 4 (forgot which one) where it came down to a non Xfactored Dark Phoenix versus Tron (not exactly the best anchor …). Justin won that set anyway in the end. He lost the runback set to Wolverine but hey keep salting hardcore.
well to justins defense he did get put into losers because of phoenix right? anyways hopefully someone finds a good counter to phoenix otherwise theres going to be a ton of sent/phoenix teams.
wong got outplayed is all.
tokido did wha he had to do.
and it went the opposite way in the ssf4 ae tournament.
wong using yang and tokido used akuma.
tokido won that tournament to.
The first game Justin lost in the first set, he landed a combo with Ammy on Sentinel with 5 meters and XF available. Did Sentinel die, as he would have with any other character on his team? No, instead Sentinel took 30% damage and got snapped out. The second game Justin lost was the obvious Phoenix metagame, where Justin burned all his meter on snapbacks and chased Phoenix in the corner to no avail.
Arguing that Justin won that set anyway or that Wolvie really won the second set misses the point. Wolvie is going to get his wins, but the point is that Wolvie with Phoenix behind him gets to focus on killing you. Wolvie without Phoenix has to focus on things like killing you without giving you too much meter, or throwing away free damage on the character he is comboing so he can try to snap in Phoenix.
Two MVC3 majors last weekend, two Phoenix champions. Nothing to see here, move along…
Yeah I REALLY don’t like the fact that having a Phoenix on your team forces the opponent to play differently just because she’s there. It’s different when it’s an assist because that’s something you can punish and has to be used properly but a character that gimps your play style just because shes on the team is kind of stupid. Justin could have won that match though I think he beat himself more than anything.
I have grown to accept the brokeness that is Phoenix, X-Factor and 30 second combos in this game. =)
I find it funny that if in MvC2 you don’t have Magneto, Storm, Sentinel or Cable on your team, you’re likely not going to be taken as serious competition. But if you use those characters and complains about the brokeness of MvC3, what does that make you?
That is true… but only for Justin. In the match that you already cited (Tokido’s 2nd win, first set), Justin killed Tokido’s Wolvie, then burned all his meter snapping and chasing Phoenix, only to lose because Tokido built 5 meters and started the minigame. Maybe if Justin had Phoenix, he would have been able to win one of those games after his Wolvie died…?
In non-Phoenix matches (including matches with Wolverine!), does the outcome of first-point-vs-first-point dictate the match results to the same degree? What do you suppose this is?
Nemo has an AMAZING Zero and Dante. A Zero better than Marn, a Dante better than anyone else, Sent is just the assist factor… I believe that Nemo’s Zero its better than Tokido’s Wolvie.
About the CEO MvC3 finals… With cold head I can say without a doubt that Justin dropped a lot of combos and made 2 fatal mistakes that costed him the finals. Tokido is just Tokido, it’s the same team and game that we saw when he got eliminated on FRXIV by PR Rog.
Yeah don’t worry they’ll fix the game with Super MVC3 and then introduce Cable in the next version called Arcade Edition, Cable also gets divekicks in this version.
