Trippfan- Hows KOF coming along?
I gotta say after watching the level up SFxT stream tonight I’m mad hype for the game.
I’m not 100% convinced quite yet, but I am a whole lot more optimistic about the game now than I was two weeks ago after seeing it in the hands of decent players. Some of the combos that were being pulled off, especially by the Tekken characters (Heiachi,Law) were seriously jaw-dropping. And the game is looking a lot cleaner overall compared to other recent builds. The game doesn’t seem to be ABC123 AS much as I thought it would be. To do real damage you have to do links into chains into exchanges; it truly made for some craziness on screen.
Hopefully Josh and I aren’t the only ones who will play it! lol Still can see why the Great One (FlyMike) has issues with it, but overall I think the game will be VERY solid.
Im sure there are other annoying chars in this game…Think ill be using Kuma and F.Megaman
Ok, 2 things, a point about SF as a cultural icon, and a point about gameplay diversity. Not singling anyone out, and not taking anything personal. Been hearing this “no blanka” thing since SF4 came out, and it does not compute.
FIRST, forget SF4 for a moment, and consider what “Street Fighter” means to our society as a whole. This is relevant, because Street Fighter is a cultural icon. I know we’re all active gamers, and “Street Fighter” means the most current version, but if we step outside that, we should realize the impact those 12 (8+4) original characters had on our culture at that time. Everybody and their brother (and sister) of a certain age played that game, maybe at their cousins’ house, maybe at their friends’ house, whatever. Everybody knew about it. That’s why the original SF characters are up there with Mario as far as cultural recognition. Now, at the time, one of the reasons it was a highly innovative game is because you could choose your character. This gave players a way to personalize their experience in a way that they hadn’t before, but wanted to. I mean, some of us thought Luigi was the cooler one but other than that we didn’t have a lot of outlet for this sort of personalization. People took advantage of this personalization to the extent that they had a sort of merging of identity with their character, or at the very least what we call “character loyalty.”
People chose characters at that time for different reasons. (I’m talking most people, the culture at large). They wanted a character they A) Thought was cool, or B) could identify with in some way. Blanka was a popular character for people to try the first time, purely because of how distinctive his concept was… A green monster in the midst of all these “regular” dudes (it’s all relative). Of course, they were all fairly distinctive, which is why people had favorites, and had loyalty. Anybody you reminisce about having played SF2 “as a kid” with will tell you with pride who they played. Chun-li was another distinctive and popular character, by virtue of being a badass but graceful female fighter, again a relatively new concept. I picked Honda for the first time because I was al about ninjas and samurais at that age (ahem). I didn’t know he was sumo until after I’d already picked him, heh, but I came to love his moves and his playstyle too. Everybody our age had a similar experience best I could tell, even people that haven’t played video games since, and don’t identify at all as gamers.
The driving force behind SFIV was to give SF2 back to the public. We had this whole culture of adults that had the same nostalgia and experience, and they wanted to capitalize on that. It would have been unthinkable to leave someone out. SFxT is a different beast, of course, and I’m not holding it to any sort of standard… but I do think by leaving 2/12 of the original chars out, that will directly translate to potential lost sales, just because of the character loyalty that SF2 instilled in people. It’s certainly not the first SFvs series to leave a few dudes out. I just don’t think it’s the best idea, that’s all.
SECOND thing. So, Blanka beats you. Or Honda. So, I get beat by Chun-Li. Or Dhalsim. It never crossed my mind to wish them out of the game. In fact, I felt fortunate that we had an excellent Chun player (Eddie) and an excellent Dhalsim player (Shawn) for me to practice against, and am glad they found characters that worked for them so well. Character diversity is what makes this game great. The game needs all of those original archetypes. Part of the fun and challenge is altering your playstyle to figure out how to beat those characters that give you trouble. And we all have chars that give us trouble, and that’s just part of the dynamic. It’s like ecology 101, man… you wish one fish out of the water and then you got a bajillion crabs running around. A game is balanced so that everybody can be kept in check to a degree. So, wish for adjustments if you must, but also wish for a balanced way for that character to exist, and retain the characteristics and playstyle that defines them.
GGs to everyone at fight night last night. Kang is a blast as always and it was good to see Rukus, Ernie, Carl make it out as well. I thought BestBuy had kidnapped Rukus and locked him away in a basement.
Cale,
while you certainly have very valid points, isn’t it a bit much to mave “too many characters?” I am not specifically pointing at any character, but I just think some games over do it! Marvel for example. Way too many characters in my opinion. Some are very “dead space” in my opinion.
Marvel would be shit without Hsien-ko.
The gems make sfxt look so dumb. I hate how the characters are basically always glowing some random ugly color.
This is why Cale is my man ten grand.
At the end of the day, I don’t wish a character out of the game. I actually love Blanka as a character design. There is just something about that character from a gameplay/matchup perspective in SF4 that gets under my skin. He’s a char people keep saying is low/mid tier but he’s one of the most infuriating chars to fight against, and last I checked that match is in my favor. I actually agree with you like, damn near 100%.
Semi-related: yo FUCK Blanka’s second alt. That shit needs to be BANNED. I was playing SmokeMaxx at ARK Bar Battles and couldn’t see SHIT through that thing, lol. It makes my eyes hurt.
I agree with you Doc Smirk. I hate the little “ka-chi” sound they make when they activate as well. I think if you give it a chance though, and maybe look past the little annoying things like that, you may enjoy it. Besides, you have to play it so we can be partners in 2 v 2 battles. You pick Sagat, I pick Bob and call it team “Belly Smirks”.
Yeah man I hear that. That’s why I think the Capcom vs. series are kind of a different beast, since they just kinda randomly pull capcom chars from the history of the company. Some of their choices make no damn sense, or are overly redundant playstyle, which leads to what you are talking about, which I don’t like either. So I don’t hold vs games to the same standards. I’m not holding SF vs T to the same standards either, me bitching about Honda is just personal heh heh. I don’t actually think it’s a travesty or anything… but I do think if you’re gonna call something “Street Fighter”, I would think it’s be in their best interests to pull from our collective nostalgia of what defines “Street Fighter” completely, and I feel that is the original characters.
Gotta agree with Cale on this. As a giefs player I probably hate blankas more than anyone on this forum but I don’t wish he was just straight gone. Like every match you just have to stop the whining and start playing.
Also this idea of too many characters being dead space is silly IMO. Sure some characters will suck but it gives the player more options to find a character that they like and want to play as. I’m excited for the sfxtk roster cause I get to try out the grapples, yoshi and others to decide who I want to play as, this abundance of characters can really only be a good thong not just for the variety for veteran players but as a good way to bring in new players.
P.S. The combo system in this game looks so sick. Not at all that abc123 shit people were talking about. That mix of links and juggles looks fucking awesome.

Ok, so this has been bugging me, the current roster of MVC3 is decent, but there is a list of characters that would be so more awesome in the game than some of the ones we got. Many characters seem like they would fit right into the MVC3 universe, but got left out. How in the fuck do derpy characters like Amaterasu, Nova, Iron Fist, Hsien-Ko, X-23, Phoenix, and She-Hulk make it into the game over others more deserving. Seriously, give me one good reason why any of these characters shouldn’t be in the game (and these are just the ones off the top of my head):
Punisher
Nick Fury
Gill
Blade
The Thing
Dardevil
Cyclops
Carnage
Gene (God Hand, son)
Bison
Jedah
Urien
Dimitri
T.Hawk
Nightcrawler
Hakan
Silver Surfer
Beast
Gambit
Blackheart
Bishop
Cammy
Winter Soldier
Sabretooth
I’m sure I could include more, but it’s just something that’s been nagging at me. I understand the characters in it now are for the most part fun to play and shit, but come on, where are the goodies?
I always thought fg need to have characters that have wacky and unique playstyle. That’s why we have blanka, voldo, zappa, arakune, etc. They can be annoying to fight against but they bring diversity to the roster.
Strekken, heeeeeeheheeheh. Some players are calling it that because they think the name is to long. 8)
We just call it “SFXT” pronounced exactly as it’s spelled.
But DUDE HOW WOULD NICK FURY AND BLADE BE DIFFERENT FROM CHRIS REDFIELD?
HOW WOULD NIGHTCRAWLER BE DIFFERENT FROM WESKER?
HOW WOULD SABRETOOTH BE DIFFERENT FROM A CHEESE GRATER?
HOW WOULD BEAST BE DIFFERENT FROM OSCAR THE GROUCH?
MIKE, MARCUS, BISHOP, DAX…HELP ME OUT HERE!
HOT

Nick fury has a cigar and blade is black, Chris is/has neither
Nightcrawler is younger than Wesker
Sabretooth has BIRDIE YEAH BOSSSSS, cheese grater does not
Beast can stick to ceilings, oscar cannot
Any other questions, mate?
