Here’s a portion of it… the interview is fucking LONG so its best to go to my site to check it out.

Right now the Japanese scene is stronger than the American and European scenes, but how do you think those scenes can evolve?
I think that the overseas scenes can grow stronger than the Japanese scene, and I think that it?s possible that the Japanese can be influenced by the overseas scene. Japanese players don?t really have any information on what?s going on overseas, so if we want to improve everyone else has to improve as well. Right now the level of the Japanese players is really high, but who knows how long that?s going to last.

I think if you look back five or six years ago, the level of overseas players was really low. There weren?t any arcades around so it was a major handicap for them, but once the strong US players are able to play against each other several times, overtaking the Japanese players becomes only a matter of time.

However, one of the weak points that the overseas scene has is their ?professional mentality?. Leveling up your game goes hand in hand with the professional mentality, but in reality it can also have an adverse affect, and people will stop sharing information, and stop becoming humble, and it tends to turn into a situation where you won?t be able to amass a lot of strong players to play against each other. That can lead to a situation where you actually take away from your scene.

In Japan you have a situation where there are a lot of people who love to experiment with the game, so when you include those kind of players into the mix, you get to the level where Japan is right now. However, if Japan ever falls into the above situation where people are unwilling to help each other, we won?t be able to maintain our current level.

What?s the biggest difference between the styles of the Japanese and foreign players?
Japanese players are able to differentiate between just watching and playing, but I feel that for overseas, everyone gets involved, as if they are all playing. Japan?s level is really high, and Japanese players are able to stay cool and calm and are able to say ?Well, it?s just a game.? But that doesn?t happen overseas. The environment is not that great so the level is low, but it?s not all that different from sports. You have people in Japan who seriously categorize it as one thing, and I think the percentage of people who think like that is rather high.

When it comes to player level, there are people who look at the Japanese play style and sense and think ?what the hell?? and ask ?Daigo, why did you do that??, and I think ?Why are they looking so intently at that?? It?s like a culture of people who are just watching matches, I guess kind of like armchair coaches in a lot of sports if you want to put it that way.

Doesn’t know what? Is Daigo implying that most people just don’t know how to use Claw properly or is it just that most don’t know how to play against Claw?

If it is the former, I’d love to know what secret techniques the Japanese have discovered. I view Claw as I do Dictator: very basic with very few “games” or gimmicks. (Well, I suppose Claw has more tricks because of Izuna…) As Daigo said, almost everything has already been discovered for the both of them. That’s another discussion for another thread.

Don’t take this the wrong way, I think it’s great that someone went through the work of translating the whole interview - but I’d just like to advise people not to take the translation to literal. It has a lot of rough spots, stuff is left out or simply mistranlsated at times. Just saying, as I already saw people getting hung up on such a mistranslation over at eventhubs.

What Daigo said was that Claw [and other underused characters] often performs quite well at tournaments since most people don’t really know how to play against him.

It’s not blood “pressurizing around joints” but blood being needed by the stomach (thus lacking from the brain, resulting in reduced concentration).

About character balance in Street Fighter 4
In every game there are strong characters and strong moves. In Street Fighter 4 there are relatively few overpowered moves, but thats kind of a minus, because I actually think its better if there are moves that make you think Man, that characters move is really damn strong! Perhaps the R&D team was a bit afraid when they were creating the game. Maybe they didnt want people to think That characters move is really damn strong!.

Having Sagat standing out as the only strong character is a problem too, I think. If you have strong characters and useful moves then the game wont get boring at all, and thats how a game stands out…

Sorry, I thought that was the most provoking thing that he said. I’m kind of surprised people haven’t pointed out that Daigo doesn’t seem to mind anything really overpowered or super strong. It’s an interesting opinion for a champion but one that’s been ironed out by years of playing all sorts of games. It looks like SF4 is the least powerful/broken game he has ever played.

He also endorses more useful moves as well. Looks like he wouldn’t mind the entire cast getting new and useful moves that are “damn strong.”

On topic, I disagree with Daigo on that “in order to get to high level play, the players need take the game less seriously” bit.

Look at Marvel, USA has that lock downed, and the environment is very similar to what he said was bad, but it seems to only make everyone get better and play better.

But then I’m not a top player, so I guess my view is bit…off?
