God of the Avengers: Thor Team/Matchup Thread

Did you watch the latest rematch between cl0ckwork and ross? He’s still using thor.

It’s debatable how long ago that was recorded though. They were still talking about the first patch. He also talked about how he was getting ready to drop Thor for a better character after winning a match on stream at a tourney. I doubt he’d drop him tho.

trying out

ammy (cold star) / thor (mighty smash) / dormammu (purification)

should i exchange smash for spark? or leave it as it is

Mighty Spark isn’t that great of an assist since smaller members of the cast (a surprising number of them) can duck under his projectile. Many stick to mighty smash since it opens up or adds a lot of combo potential if timed and used right with the right characters.

Hope that helps with what you were wondering.

I have ammy so I can use that to get in while it distracts them thats why.

That what I do with Tron/Thor. Mighty Smash is good, but Mighty Spark is more useful on my team. If I hit them with Tron’s j.S and Mighty Spark hits, it nullifies the bounce or something like that. If they want to duck under, then they have to block Tron’s j.whatever in time. If they try to AA me or air grab my j.H, Mighty Spark hits them. Plus it’s easy to plug it into Tron’s BnBs.

Other than crossover counter, how do you use the Mighty Smash assist with your team compared to Mighty Spark? Is it more effective? That’s what I would be taking into consideration.

that ground bounce won’t help tron too terribly much in a combo

i’ve actually been trying to work on using mighty strike as odd as that might sound with my captain america - i have a plan :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I’ve been messing around with Thor (smash)/Arthur (bottle)/Haggar (lariat). It’s not the best team, but then again, I only play casuals.

I think Gold Arthur fire bottle is a great assist for Thor. Here are some good things about the assist + combos and set-ups.
**
-Depending on if the character is blocking or being hit, the assist will push/carry the opponent back. This can either give Thor some breathing room or Thor can wave dash behind the assist to keep the pressure. It can also carry the opponent into the corner where Thor is the most deadliest.**
**
-Since most of the cast can duck under the mighty spark, the assist really helps with zoning and keep away/corner lock down. This allows Thor to cover the air, especially jump xx air dash area, with TK instant L mighty sparks. Also, the assist eats up a lot of the assist and other stuff the opponent might throw on the screen as well.**

Ex: Corner ‘lock-down’ = Arthur assist, [TK L mighty spark, L mighty spark, L mighty spark, land, L mighty spark + assist] repeat in [ ]
…Not a true lock down, but keeps the opponent in the corner and hard for them to get in on you.
…Space yourself about 1/2 screen away. I find that to be the ideal range.
…Thor can charge attacks in the air. So, when you TK L mighty spark, input the second one right before the previous one ends and it’ll come out as soon as the previous one ends. This keeps Thor in the same spot and cuts short any escape window. You can also input the mighty strike, fly, or air dash.
**
-The assist set-ups two meter building combos for Thor using the Mighty Taunt. **

s.L, s.M + assist, L mighty spark xx mighty taunt (charge)

…opponent blocking, this builds about 75% meter.
…hitting opponent, this builds 1 full bar.
**
-Thor block/pressure strings using the assist-**

-c.L, c.M + assist, H mighty smash (puts opponent between Thor and assist), then…

a) j.H (ambiguous cross-up), M mighty strike…
…if j.H, M strike hits-special > air combo
…if j.H, M strike is blocked, c.L > repeat pressure string

b) dash forward into opponent (push them out of assist), mighty hurricane > follow-up

-c.L, c.M + assist, L mighty strike, then…

a) pressure with mix-up of tri-jump L and air dash cross-up H
b) wave dash behind assist, mix-up with…
…tick mighty hurricane > follow-up
…jump air-dash H xx M mighty strike > pressure string

So I have a team revolving around amaterasu, Thor, and Doc Doom. If anyone has any ideas for how this team could be made even a little effective in their opinion then i would appreciate it. I’m open to all ideas since i’m “in the lab” almost all the time in pretty much all fighters i play. I’m not great at playing thor when he’s out because i just want so bad for his normals to be faster so if anyone has any general notes on playin him from their experience it would be greatly appreciated. Once PSN is back up I’d like to play some fellow thor players. My handle is K-nami, and I’ll see ya’ll once the online multiplayer world is restored.

Been trying out Magneto(EMD)/Thor(Spark)/Tron(Flame) lately and am doing much better than I thought I would. Mighty Spark is a good assist to help Magneto rushdown as it stays out for a decent amount of time and doesn’t cause knockdown (sort of lower tier mix of drones and plasma beam), Tron helps them both out quite a bit for obvious reasons, but in particular I feel that priority assists like Tron, Haggar and Hulk can really add to Thor’s throw and reset games.

Also there are plenty of DHC glitch opportunities here as well.

However I don’t think that Tron makes for a great anchor so that is something I’ll either have to work on or change.

Okay so I just had a set against a really good Dante that was being backed by Tron assist. It feels like what you’ll have to do is have specific teams for Thor depending on your opponent. Against anyone using Tron assist, Zero helps a lot. I played Zero/Thor/Sentinel. If you can do any of the relaunch stuff with Zero and Thor is behind him, do an aerial exchange into Thor at the end. Preferably you’ll be able to knock them back down to get that full meter. If you have them in the corner with Zero you can end the combo with a knockdown, call Thor (m. smash) as you do aerial qcf+medium/fierce instead of Zero’s natural buster combos.

If Thor’s on point when they’re in the corner and you use his flight resets it feels like you’re more likely to land aerial exchange because they’re more worried about you switching characters. This is good for anyone who’s team building for DHC glitch. Ideally the fear of Thor doing an aerial exchange into someone like Storm should help Thor set up some of his stuff in the air. Right now I’m trying to build a decent Magneto. Rom loop builds enough meter to use DHC glitch, Shockwave connects after Hyper Tornado, EM disruptor comes out fast enough as an assist to give Thor the chance to get to the air and Mighty Thunder becomes safe if it’s followed by Shockwave. I’m workin on Dormammu too. Mostly because flame carpet makes for easy relaunch when Dorm’s teamed with Thor. Gotta get my MastaCJ on, lol. I’ll still play Thor/Tron/Sent most of the time but I have to start playin the better match ups…

@Ebbs, I play Thor-Dorm-Haggar, Thor and Dormammu got some serious synergy. Dorm’s dark hole is really good for Thor’s pressure, and Thor’s smash assist can get Dorm a relaunch. Also DHC from THor bnb > Dorm ball super does like 807k which is pretty good, and gives you time to tag back in thor and dash up for a potential air command grab reset/mixup.

^ Agreed, Dorm as an anchor for Thor is stellar. My only trouble really is deciding whether I want someone on the team before Thor for DHC trick purposes OR do I want someone with a long assists like Hidden Missiles, Cold Star or even Taskmaster’s Vertical Shot that will help Thor set up a scary tick throw game.

I’m not the best player, but the way I see it is thor needs a team that will help him. If you wanted to do DHC tricks you’re better off with other chars, but if you want command grab mixups and resets and damage then you play thor. But lots of people use him for DHC trick though.

Ammy with his triangle jump seems to work phenomenally, also I THINK I found a glitch. I’ll have to try in training mode, it happened in vs. But someone I was fighting was in block stun from Ammy’s assist. DURING the assist I activated the grab hyper and it landed o__0 Normally you shouldn’t be able to get someone mid block stun.

Actually, I’m gonna go try it in training mode now.

Edit: False Alarm, hell if I know how it landed. This is why the game needs fucking replays V_V

ea

Either it was right after the last shot of cold star or after the first shot (because ammy pauses briefly), ammy’s coldstar doesnt cause a lot of hit/block stun so i think both might be possible.

I’m not even playing Dorm for the DHC synergy. Thor’s all around bad, but his worst matchups are characters that Dormammu can deal with soundly for the most part. I sacrifice Thor having the team built around him to have a more sound team overall immediately when I go to Dorm. Ideally Thor won’t come out until it’s at a favorable time. Dorm/Sent can be for movin in on people and Dorm/Thor is for combos. I also end up having two characters who would be decent anchors instead of just Sentinel…

Ok so Thor is all around bad, but you still want him on your team when you could use plenty of other chars for DHC trick or to allow combo extensions. Why use thor then? For favorable matchups, or just cuz you like him?

I honestly just like the character. I have a feeling he was just rushed, I mean if you watch the trailer for him, they didn’t even have all of his moves done yet and the audio for him was different. He can win but he needs to be looked at by the testers again.

I’d have thought everyone that played Thor was just cos they liked him LOL. It’s why he’s on my alt team, Thor fanboy just wanna make a viable team centered around him. The potential’s certainly there though.
