God of the Avengers: Thor Team/Matchup Thread

As i said, uncharged liberation has two main uses for Thor.

  1. extending a combo after of a Mighty hurricane reset in the corner with Thor s.L + call assist (at the same time) > s.M > Mighty Smash M
  2. Allows an instant crossup for an upcoming character.

I dont use black hole as Dorm assist in that team because Hsien-ko Sempu bu already covers Thor lockdown needs, and Purification is absolutely worthless for Thor.

Yeah, i have a new strategy. I use Strange bolts for covering Thor rushdown midscreen when the opponent is at a certain distance, and coldstar for corner pressure and when the opponent gets too close.

For extending combos both of dorm’s other assists are better i can guarantee that. Also i havent personally tried out that combo you’re talking about but it sound like you’re adding unnecessary damage scaling with st.LM +assist at the start of the combo, you should be able to do more damage solo. If its an air mighty hurricane (and most resets are) you can follow up with st.H xx mighty smash M, cr.H S…and it will work anywhere on the screen.

The instant cross up thing i can actually see being better with liberation because of how fast it is, but i dont think that 1 reason is enough to use it over the other 2 imo.

That couldnt be any less true, purification is an amazing assist especially for thor. Dark hole is more useful in general but for thor purification rly is one of my favorite assists and i prefer it over dark hole. It helps with zoning, resets and is a better combo extender, the only thing dark hole is better at is lockdown because it lasts slightly longer.

mm, how are you extending combos with purification? it’s very hard to OTG with it after of an air combo (or at least it was in Vanilla), Mighty smash H is more than enough. In my opinion doesn’t help with resets at all, Purification send the enemy way to high and gives the opponent a chance to scape Thor corner pressure. As for zoning, it probably helps, but come out slower than a black hole which is a much better zoning tool. I dont use black hole because Sempu bu is the superior zoning/lockdown assist in that specific team, if not i would.

And yeah, the combo with liberation in the corner adds to the hitstun decay, but also charges meter, that’s why i have Thor in that team, he is the battery (Thor /Dorm /Hsien-ko). Dorm loves all that meter. I expend meter with Thor only when he is going to take down a character.

EDIT: Actually, disregard my post, i just tested some purification combos with Thor in the corner and they are very interesting. The air zoning is not that hot but definitely something to be aware of for characters like Morrigan and Storm.

You call Purification before you get the air throw. Thor pounds ‘em right down into it, and they go flying right back up. Then you super jump towards them for a Mighty Hurricane reset. Purification also works great for Thor’s corner pressure, too, as he can extend combos off of it by doin’ somethin’ like, your bnb, launch, air bnb :s: to knock 'em down. Purification to send ‘em off the ground, quick super jump into a Mighty Strike into a Tornado. It’s also great just by itself because Thor’s whole game is in the air, but occasionally, he’ll run into those characters who like being in the air, too. Since you probably have the horizontal axis locked with your beam assist, throwing in Purification to the mix’ll greatly help Thor with keepin’ the air on lock too. Best part is, it works as a lockdown assist too. Definitely not the best as you can’t really do Thor’s lockdown block strings with it, but you’re still able to keep 'em where you need to, and any time you get a hit with it, super jump Mighty Hurricane all day every day. I’m sure Arti’s got some more tech with it, but that’s what I’ve been using it for.

i run Ghost Rider, Hulk, Capt. but im really thinking about putting Thor in there at mid w/ Mighty Strike assist. i think it OTG’s not sure? (can someone tell me) but anyway if you haven’t met a good GR online you probably will. we all know that his pressure from distant is crazy. i wanna tag that w/ the huge amount of dmg and cool factor of having Thor on my team once i get them into the corner. but idk how effective he is when he’s mid screen in comparison to being in the corner.

if i sub him in for Hulk how good of a character is he in space? hulk smashes anyone from distant or close. gamma wave cancel into gamma tsunami hits for huge damage. but what good is thor when he’s far away? and on top of that how many assist do i really need to dedicate to him for him to be effective? i use GR Heartless Spire as an OTG assist and Cap’s varies from Shield Throw to Stars and Stripes. depending on what i feel i need for the match up…

I know i asked a couple of questions here but thats what this discussion is for right? if anyone could answer some of these questions that’d be great. lol

If you leave Cap at Shield Slash and Ghost at heartless Spire that should cover Thor. I really do not know what you mean when you ask “What good is thor when he’s far away?” Thor needs to be up close to deal damage he is not a ranged/keepaway character.

Not taking the time to learn Strange is simply a matter of time allocation. There are a number of characters that I am interested in learning (Iron Man/Dorm/Strider/Doom/Mag) and becoming proficient with. In the meantime there are characters like Sentinel (drones) and Wesker (OTG) that are not only amazing assists, but function well with basic combinations. This allows me time to work on my point character and fundamental game knowledge.

So, Sentinel and Wesker - are they cheap? I would say so. Are they boring to watch? Absolutely, but they are the crutches I’m gimping with until I find time enough to practice. I’m a soldier. Over the last 3 weeks I’ve spent monday through friday under the open skies, far from a TE stick. I enjoy playing marvel among other things, and my weekends have been primarily recovery based since the release of Ultimate.

well i meant in a sense of, getting across screen to actually do some dmg. i know he’s a slow character. what are his options when im trying to work my way back closer to my opponent.

Stay tuned, all will be answered in but a moments time. (Working on reshaping the Thor forums).

Ah, since you asked so nicely, first thing you need to understand is Thor isn’t as slow as everyone thinks he is. He works best in the air. His primary forms of movement are his aerial Mighty Strikes, his flight mode, and his air dashes. If someone’s busy play, “tag you’re it,” all of those tools, combined with a good beam assist will easily allow you to close the distance between you and your opponent.

The video is from vanilla, and a pretty much everything still applies in Ultimate, except it’s all faster.

vid looks helpful. but if you look at team im thinking about putting him in. the assist i’d have to work w/ range wise are Ghost Riders and Captain Americas. i really dont want to change GR’s because its an OTG and Cap’s shield isnt what i would consider a “beam” assist

A “beam” assist is really any assist that covers the whole horizontal axis of the screen at a quick pace. You’re not really looking to do much of anything with it other than getting the opponent to block it. Cap’s Shield slash is especially good for that because they have to block it as it comes towards them and as it comes back, which gives all the time in the world for Thor to do his tri jumps while coming in.

If I pick Cap America, Thor and Hawkeye

would this be an ok team, the avenger team I guess

We really need to do a mighty punish/hurricane punish or counter list. Lets go.

I ran that team for a little bit but was getting more wins when I switched out Thor for Hulk, which led me to make a new Thor team.

I’m using thor (mighty smash)/GR (CoR)/Hawkeye (quickshot). Does that team work in this order? I think about changing CoR for heartless spire but i’m not entirely sure. Any help will be appreciated.

You could use ghost rider as an otg. I think tha tteam is okay I don’t know how dhc synergy is (seems bad) but if you likle the play style you might make it work. Also a better lockdown assist could be nice but its probably okay, outside of dhc synergy problems.

i think that in this case it might be better to put GR on point, you should be able to extend his combos using mighty smash. Dont really know much about GR’s assists to suggest anything but doesnt his CoR and hawkeye’s assist basically serve the same purpose?

Can I get some critcism for the team of Thor (might smash), Skrull (tenderizer) , Arthur (dagger toss)

People have talked about similar setups before. I think the only real problem I see with that team is that you have Thor and Arthur on the same team, so unless you really like to work hard, maybe its not the best? I mean dagger toss is a great assist though Thor works a bit better with a better lockdown assist, but Arthur sorta works for that. Tenderizer is fine for Thor combo extensions or so I here Im sure it works just like cold star. Probably also useful for incoming character mixups. I think overall the team is probably fine, you can deal alot of damage, not be too troubled by excessive keepaway. I think that perphaps your biggest issue will be really landing that first hit. I always found I had trouble with Skrull doing that, landing a good solid hit for the kill. But yeah, full of decent characters so about as good as a team full of okay characters would be. I don’t see any synergy issues really so yeah… oh might want to use mighty spark instead of mighty smash, just cuase Id on’t see what any of your characters get out of mighty smash.

I think the problem with skrull isnt opening ppl up but making his moves safe, if you have an assist to do that then his cross ups and command grab are great for opening ppl up.

Anyway like FMR said its a good team but you dont have a good lockdown assist, tenderizer can work as a lockdown assist in the corner though and its probably the best assist in the game against incoming characters. It’s not the best team for thor but it still works.

1 suggestion i would make is switching SS with Arthur, that way you have a character that can DHC glitch after mighty punish. Also after mighty tornado you can DHC into king’s armor, get a few more hits in then raw tag him out for skrull or thor, that way you have a reliable way of getting arthur’s powered up assist. Even if you dont manage to get arthur in the 3rd spot SS is still a pretty good anchor.
