(Ugh, I just realized that I need to buy another PS3 controller to do all this testing. Sigh…)
Anyway, I finally finished the “A Word” for Chris under the beginning of the Match-ups section. Please look over and constructively criticize it for syntax, content and judging whether or not I’m being too cynical or wordy.
With that finally done, I’ll probably save the other stuff for the rest of the week, especially if I can get my hands on the guide this coming Wednesday. Otherwise, everything else will probably have to wait until next weekend considering how busy this coming week looks for me.
What are everyones thoughts on Chris in Ultimate so far?
I feel like the gun canceling was a significant buff… but I feel Chris is more or less the same in terms of his place in the meta game. Very solid and underrated character but needs a team built around him to be effective. I don’t feel like his bad matchups got significantly better with his buffs though… he still has some nasty uphill battles. I also feel like a few of the new characters like Hawkeye, Strange, Vergil, and Firebrand added more not so great matchups :(.
He is still a blast to play though. Nothing feels better still than lighting people up with dat magnum.
Thanks cambosam. The answer is yes and no. Yes, if he’s crossed-up, then he’s invulnerable from both sides as result of being forced to get up (you can see that in the video where Dr. Strange’s Eye of Agamotto just sort of hovers on top of me, waiting until my hit box becomes active). However, if your opponent is in front of you, and you attempt to get up, you’ll still get hit (at least through my testing).
He’s better overall obviously. The gun canceling buffs made him much more solid independantly as a character. He’s less dependant on a team built around him this time around and his viability as an anchor or secondary character went up drastically, ableit he is still most useful on point.
His place in the meta-game remains unchanged because the meta-game itself is nearly unchanged. Chris is a defensive ground-based zoning character. The problem with defensive characters in this game is because blocking is relatively difficult in a game like this.
His bad match-ups are overall better due to the characters he usually has troubles with being nerfed.
The only reason he won’t be picked up is because he has a significant learning curve as to how to incorporate his moves in a practical setting. That and because he doesn’t fight with a sword or wear a trench coat.
If Chris has one thing going for him, it’s versatality. The character is excellent at keep-away, but his close range and mid-range options are very effective.
Great job with the video, I learned some neat stuff. I had posted some tidbits about this in the Vanilla thread in June. At the time I really didn’t know what to do with it.
I had primarily used this against Berserker spam, Beam crossups, and Vanilla Tron. You gotta be careful though as the using it too often can get you blown up by feints, and :l: Berserker Slash. I dont use it much against Wolvie in Ultimate now as mines ruin his day now, but its still nice to use midscreen or further against beam porters and the like. I know SRK and co. will find some cool stuff for this.
Sorry for the double post
Now that command-normal shots are cancellable, there are many more assists that allow you to connect.
These are assist that I’ve used so far to get full hits (All will allow for the 2nd grenade to hit last.)
These are all after hard knockdowns
Corner: (Assist > :d::h: xx :dp: xx Grenade Launcher)
Vergil - Rapid Slash
Doom - Rocks
Thor - Mighty Smash
Sentinel - Drones
Super Skrull - Tenderizer (Midscreen Possible?)
Chun Li - Lightning Legs (Midsscreen Possible?)
Phoenix Wright - Press the Witness
Midscreen+corner Confirmed
Magneto - Hyper Grav (Assist > :d::h: xx :dp: xx Grenade Launcher)
Deadpool - Katanarama (Combo into knockdown > dash+assist > :dp: > Grenade Launcher – amazing for easy Happy Birthdays as it OTGs both chars)
Dr. Strange - Eye (Assist > slight delay > :d::h: xx :dp: xx Grenade Launcher – setting up can be a bit tricky midscreen)
Dante - Jam session (Assist > :d::h: xx :dp: xx Grenade Launcher-- also tricky midscreen)
These are just some I’ve tried when experimenting with teams. Note most corner setups can be more elaborate and damaging than the ones posted. For Dante and Strange, I was not able to do midscreen setups after :h: Boulder Punch. I had to use launcher > j.:h: >dash + assist to do midscreen
Sorry to change subject here but I need some help with Chris’s matchups, mainly with Hawkeye and Hulk. I feel like my only option against Hawkeye is super jumping or prone, and neither leads to anything. Hulk just rapes me, I always just keep push blocking and try to get something going but nothing ever pans out and eventually get that punch to the face. Chris didn’t seem to struggle this much against Hulk during the MvC3 opening…
Your best anti-hulk tool is shotgun. Use it intelligently and he’ll have a hard time getting in.
As for hawkeye, I’m having a ton of trouble with him (as I’m sure everyone else is). So far, the best I’ve got is sj gun cancelled into other gun, then start chucking grenades once he starts chasing you up there. It’s never effective for very long. That matchup is a nightmare.
Yeah, I played a zoning hawkeye once, Hardest I’ve ever been zoned. He can super jump and shoot horizontally to counter jump guns, and I couldn’t get in. It was just arrows, assists, arrows. After the match, I figured that I could’ve went prone, but I discovered his command jump arrows would still hit. Now that I know what he’s capable of, I’ll probably hold forward at the start of the match instead of be content to go to our respective corners and duke it out.
Speaking of match ups, Ghost Rider’s jump S coupled with an assist like Doom’s Beam or Taskmaster’s Arrows are killing me. Literally have no idea what to do. I thought of maybe getting at the right distance, and then neutral jump and magnum him at the space where his S won’t hit me, maybe catch an assist too and ground bounce him to death, but that’s just theory fighter. Anyone successfully taking down Ghost Riders?
Yeah, up close the best thing you can really do is bait out the slide, pray he doesn’t cancel into command jump, and punish. But he can out prioritize most of what you’ve got. His pokes, his jump normals and that goddamn slide just beat everything. It’s a puzzle, to be sure.
As for Ghost Rider, I tend to lean on rising fang a bunch and it can be infuriating to them, but if I don’t want to call him or he’s dead already, I go with just jump forward and block, then advancing guarding him until he’s cornered, where he’s weakest. Then try a mixup, or a throw, or a lockdown assist. If he’s good and penance stares me or just manages to beat out a nomal, I’m pretty much screwed, but such is life in chris-ville. Also, you can always use sj Magnum if he’s not throwing out hidden missile.
Yeah, up close, Hawkeye isn’t much of a problem. Not a real mix up heavy character, so if you block enough, they’re bound to make a mistake eventually. Rising Fang is an incredible assist, even for rushdown. I couldn’t press a button knowing he was gonna come kick me in the face. It’s really solid, and I wish I was more interested in playing him. I guess that’s what I’m missing, an anti-air assist.
Fun trick vs Storm: If you see her attempt a hail; react to the super flash with the grenade super. You take 1 hit and the grenade explosion cancels out all the ice which gives you a free magnum combo.
So, I finally filled in that Partner part of the front page, a week after I had intended to. Better late than never, I guess–except not really.
I’ll try to do some versus things later on today; I’ll also probably fill in some combo stuff from the other threads and general damage for all his attacks. With regards to “opponent” sections, it will primarily be on characters I’ve played a lot again (online) like the ever-present Wesker, Zero and Captain America. I’ll probably avoid Vergil just because I still don’t understand that damn character and won’t be able to get much more fighting against him done considering that my left thumb is kinda screwed up again.
Besides that, I still kinda need input on stuff I put under “A Word” about a week ago as well as more input in general. I wasn’t able to go anywhere this last Wednesday, so I still don’t have the guide to do frame data or anything like that unfortunately.
(realizes he still hasn’t watched that Prone Position video yet and curses)
Ugh… I hate double posting.
Ugh… I remember why I hate edit function on this newer SRK even more. So damn capricious.
Despite that “whimsy”, I’ve finally updated all the Basics with damage, hits and discussion as well adds verbal cues. I may be able to get the guide today. Maybe.
Regardless, I do need direct feedback on the front page. I’ll try to make update it more frequently, but it is rather hit-or-miss without any comments.
As such, I need you to destroy what I’ve just added constructively. Please pay no heed to the fact that I’ve been awake for 36+ hours with only about 3 hours of sleep max. That’s no excuse for not being clear or coherent.
Tested out everything with Chris post-patch (normals, special moves, supers, assists) and he’s been unchanged. Don’t know why I felt like I had to check, but I did. Not gonna lie, I was hoping for some hidden buff somewhere, but no luck on that, haha.
Although double jumping with Chris and seeing him turn invisible during his dash is satisfying enough.
Flamethrower just got “shades gets put on” badass
On a serious note, Chris with spencer assist is a must, best would probably be Chris/Spencer/Hawkeye or Doom.
(Ugh. Is there really no changelog for the patch that came out yesterday? How irksome.)
Good find, GcYoshi13. I’ve already made a note in the changelog that Flamethrower can empty cancel into every special but Prone Position and that it can cancel into launcher, but only on contact with the opponent.
Wonder if he got anything else.
Would you mind point out where the minor ones you saw are? I’m pretty sure I can find themselves, but it would help speed things up a bit.
Regardless, thanks for the feedback.
I’ll fix any typos in everything tomorrow when split apart General Strategy, add some combos and update Flamethrower’s section a bit due to the above changes.
In an effort to give this thread a slight kick in the ass, I must ask: What teams have people been using Chris on?
I’ve only been really playing around with Chris/Hawkeye/Dormammu for the past month, but I’m going to give that a bit of a break for a couple of reasons. I’m probably going to try using Chris second, especially since I’m still not convinced about him as anchor, at least when it comes to him being able to abuse X-Factor Level 3.
