The model Cadillac they used was used for both ambulances and hearses.
I always got the impression that the one they got was a retired ambulance because they couldn’t afford the paint job to go from black to white and red EDIT; It was black when they first got it, my memory is getting bad or it’s been far too long since I’ve seen the original. Also, it would have a siren already.
