This is a nice concept and really well executed.
The only feedback is that the separate ft5’s suffer the same problem as round robin where often time it ends anticlimactically unlike single or double elims.
However I don’t have a good suggestion to fix that.
Was it Damdai or fake Damdai?
I believe it was the real Damdai. I don’t think there is a fake damdai account on GGPO. He was on GGPO the same time the stream was going.

It will make it more difficult to run an organize, but if you take papasis feedback and try to make the ending more climactic, you can stop the set once someone scores (once, or gets ahead by a set number, say 3). Let the other person catch up. And continue the set once they overtake the first player.
That way, Worst case scenarios/least exciting would be something like these:
lets say first player scores 3 of 4 in the first set
Stop the match, second player loses 0-10 , then wins 5 in a row.
First player plays till he has no more matches/ wins then stops. (maybe give players a choice of who to fight but max 5 wins/losses per gladiator, so players are more likely to catch up and final matches will be the hardest ones where one match wil basically win it unless the other player pushes hard. Epic.
Other absolute worst case scenario (made less likely by giving players the choice mentioned above)
First player wins 3-0,
Second player loses 0-15.
First player declared winner without playing rest of matches.
By limiting scores before switching players, the person behind psychologically feels he can catch up because it’s just 1-3 matches (in most realistic examples and not my 2 worst cade scenarios
Lets use random.org to generate some set numbers to illustrate a “normal” set , because im in class with a playbook right now and cant generate more accurate/likely/realistic scenarios but really, you dont need it to understand my point)(27 matches per player, max possible for 3 FT5 0 representing a loss, 1 representing a win)
Player 1:

Player 1 now has “TWENTY ONE games to catchup” (note the scarebquotes) by winning 3 and take the leadagain he does so tying at game 14 and leading by 3 at game 18
At this point you can start doing one match for one match after player 2 reaches 12 wins. or keep going wiht the system until someone reaches 15.
Epic episodes feel more epic, lame episodes are cut short. Unless younhave something like yesterday, with a low tier character and both players struggle to get to 3

Btw found a better solution for a more climatic last contender:
vs 1st contender gladiators get 1 point each win
vs 2nd contender, they get 2 points each win
vs 3rd contender, they get triple points each win
this way basically any gladiator has a better chance to win during the last set, it also can be played strategically by picking the last contender accordingly of how comfortable with the match up he is

This week, four contestants will dare face our Grand Masters in a battle for the high-score & bragging rights.
The Game is Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, a head to head fighting game that has stood the test of time & is still played in arcades & online lobbies around the world.
Our players this week will compete using Chun Li. “Chun is ranked high mid-tier. There are certain characters that she dominates, certain characters she has even matches with, and certain characters who dominate her.” – from wiki.shoryuken.com/Chun-Li_(ST)
Our Grand Masters are free to choose their character of choice, & be assured they will not make this easy for our players!
How the Grand Master Challenge works:
First Round: “Elimination”
Each player gets one best 3 out of 5 games against each of our first round Grand Masters. A win is worth 1 point, a loss, 0 points. 1st & 2nd place move on the the final round while 3rd & 4th place are eliminated.
Tiebreaker: “Mirror Match”
In the event of a tie between 2nd & 3rd place will the players face each other in one game for the winning point.
Final Round: “Last Man Standing”
The two players left standing will face the final round Grand Master in one best 3 out of 5 games each. (The player who finished 2nd goes up first.)
Tiebreaker: “Mirror Match”
In the event of a tie, the contestants will face each other in one last game for the winning point!
