GGPO etiquette (and gaming etiquette in general)

While I obviously enjoy playing players who are at my level or higher more than players who are beginning, I’m not about to quit on a guy who legitimately wants to learn the game. I want the scene to grow, and one way to do that is to help players who are new to it figure out why they should stay. I know that when I play someone who consistently beats me, I want that person to keep playing me and keep using the character I’m having problems with so that I can figure out ways to win, and I assume that players who consistently lose to me feel the same way.

I feel that the only etiquette needed on GGPO is to remain at peace and no whining. That’s the creed I play by, even if I sometimes go beyond that. If the other person doesn’t like what I’m doing (since I do main claw), they’re free to leave at any time.

But yeah, I think I’m of the same view as UltraDavid. I don’t particularly enjoy playing folks who are obviously less experienced since I tend to hold back all the time to give them a chance, which hampers my own skills and muscle memory while developing poor habits. Still, maybe about half these type of players I play on GGPO seem to actually learn something from the experience (the so-called non-scrubs) so if it helps someone, then that’s worthwhile.

I won’t quit on the person I’m playing against at the moment to play someone better unless that player really isn’t learning at all. However, I also generally don’t go out and challenge any random person I see since I’d still rather play someone I know will improve my game if possible.

Psh, you’re just in it for the free soda

The only thing i personally hate weather it be GGPO or real life is when someones beasting on me but also keeps switching characters constntly. My little brother will do this. Learn some awesome new approach with someone kick the hell out of me for two rounds then switch up and come back to that character again 10 games later and kick the shit out of me again and then fucking switch up. Come on man stick with someone so i can at least learn something here. Its really hard to learn anything when you parry like a loser (defense is hold back not tap forward sheesh) and your opponent knows nasty Uriene un-blockables and 3 bar set ups. Sheesh.

Well that was an unnecessary rant. Anyway if your beating someone more often then not stick with your character more then 1 or 2 rounds, if they are not a so called scrub then they are probably interested in figuring out how to get around your game and get to the mind games, the meat of the game and its damn hard to do this when who you are fighting rotates his game every single round and you spend more time struggling to figure out just how to stay alive much less push forward an actual game plan.

But you don’t sound like your at that point anyway but something to keep in mind perhaps.

I do this all the time when facing someone worse than me, I didn’t know someone would hate it.

Basically if I win 15 rounds using my main and lose I will change to someone else I’m not that familiar with to practice and experiment, because I will have more fun and learn more that way than beating him 50 times with the same character.

I just view guys who learn one thing and nothing else as trash players not worth playing. In the arcade I tried to make those players quit the game, or at least make them broke. On GGPO you can’t take another guy’s money or make them quit- which can be a good or bad thing.

I usually say hi, chat a bit during the game, and always say ggs at the end. In general, I have more fun when both players chat a bit. The only thing I really dislike is someone being a total ass. A little trash talk is fine, but straight-up being a dick isn’t.

As far as using the same characters over and over goes, I usually work it like this:

  • If I’m losing consistently with my character, I’ll keep picking him over and over, and hope that the better player won’t get bored so that I can get some practice with my guy. But I don’t really care if they stay with the same character or not.

  • If the matches are really, really close and tense, with back and forth wins, I like it when both of us stick with the same character. This is rare, but it’s a lot of fun when it goes down.

  • If the matches are about average, I’ll usually switch up who I play quite a bit. But again, I don’t care if they pick the same guy over and over or not.

  • If I’m consistently beating someone in a long streak(10+ matches, hardly losing a round) then I’ll usually ask them if they want me to switch up and/or give them some tips. If they’re new to the game, they usually enjoy the variety. But if they just have a hard time in that match-up or against that character they probably want the practice. I’m fine with both of those things. And in either case, I’m cool with them picking the same guy over and over.

So in general, I guess I don’t really mind who either of us plays. Just have fun

It sounds like good, friendly communication is key, as it is in everyday life as well.

imo thats the right attitude to have while fighting, basically what your saying is dont get frusterated by what the other player is doing and just play your game
