I was thinking more ways of making the game crash.
It would only be worth it if you could obtain legal access to those ROMs, along with significant improvements to the GGPO client. Right now it’s a pretty rough-on-the-edges system that lets you play against others 1v1, and let you talk in a gigantic room, and that’s about it. There would have to be things like private rooms, a friends list, a variety of settings, training mode, easier methods of configuring buttons, a messaging system, etc etc.
To avoid the macros situation, just set it so that there are no macros allowed in the config options for the game.
No way. I dont want to give anymore money to capcom.

i think ggpo as a platform currently is perfect for fighting games. room to talk shit and arcade ROMs where winner keeps team/character
The only way for this to work would be for them to fine some form of DRM to secure the ROMs so that people couldn’t just rip them and use them in other emulators.
Of course that will never happen…I hope. DRM has historically failed to prevent piracy and only frustrates legitimate buyers. Delicious irony.
This was my main thought process. We would get an updated client with rooms, friends list, private rooms, replays. Definitely would like to see an UI revamp and easier method of set up (I personally don’t MIND doing the port forwarding but, I see why people would).
Controlling macro’s would be easy enough, just don’t allow them like EL said.
I am basically saying we would PAY for an upgrade and get what we want but, it would be a paid service (or maybe a premium one that has all the updated features but leaves the free version alone?).
Lately I’ve been thinking more along the lines of the current upcoming PC business model. I’ll be calling it F2P+ from here-on-out.
Basically provide the client for free, allow use of its roms (only through the client-side) on a time-trial basis, and give limited access to its basic functions and UI. This allows people to get a feel for the game, try it out, and see if they like it.
If they don’t like it, fine, they’re allowed to leave the program alone, uninstall it, whatever, but have no access to the roms without the client running.
If they like it, they’re still allowed to play their favorite games, but only at a very basic level. To access a greater scope of competition, interface, messaging systems, friends list, stats and achivements, all that fancy shit, they’ll have to pay for each game they want to play. This can be a one-time fee, or a monthly fee that gives access to all contents in the game. Only requirements would be that you have to run the GGPO client in order to play the game, and you need to access the internet at least initially in order to authorize the game and allow you to run it.
Just a rough sketch of possible options for GGPO.
ewww no, no stats/leaderboards
idk, like I said, i think ggpo as it is is awesome…feels very arcade-y in that you go in a room, ask if anyone wants to play. Find a match, beat him, keep winning, gain respect, people notice you, you start gaining notoriety as a better player, move up the ‘ranks’ so to speak. (i only visit the mvc1 room so idk if other games are like this)
I WOULD like a save replay/record games option so I could save my matches to my comp and upload to youtube instead of hoping BahamianKing is online
i think we’ve all paid enough for capcoms sins. let us just have whats left on ggpo for free until we die, and not have to shell out more money for their shitty ports and implementation of ggpo.
id rather see another service pop up that improves on ggpo, and offers even more games. shoutout to ggpo, but there are always was to improve things. if i had the funds to do it, id hire peeps in a heartbeat to get it crackin right now. money talks, there is just no money talkin right now. it will happen in the next 3-5 imo. someone will take it to the next level, and we will be playing 90 percent of our favorite fighting games pre sf4 online and for free. everything from karate champ to hokuto no ken. there are still a lot of options now between supercade and ggpo, but i think that next level will come soon enough.
not even just fighting games. man, bored millionaires dont know what to do with their cash. id make a ggpo for like half the games i loved growing up.lol. CASH, make it happen. powerstone online, get it crackin, battle toads and double dragon online. ff9 online. hnk online. karate champ online. SUPER SMASH TV ONLINE NIGGA! WHEEEEEEWWWWWWWW! OOOOOO WE
Wow. This topic is still going? This is pretty cut and dry but I guess people are bored and want to debate.
1: The whole reason for the GGPO Client’s existence is too demonstrate rollback netcode and show developers that this is how it should be done. Ponder has gone on record stating this. Though I’m not sure if he has only been advocating GGPO or rollback netcode in general.
2: Ponder is not in it for the money. He’s had offers from Chinese pirates to monetize GGPO but declined because he’s not in it for the money and…
3: It is illegal to profit from a rom-based service. So the instant you try to sell GGPO as a service with copyrighted material would summon a shit load of lawyers from Capcom and SNKP. Besides, Ponder has some sort of relationship with Capcom and doesn’t want to risk losing it.
That’s it. End of story. Why are people still debating this shit? As far as the Naomi/Atomiswave arcade titles using GGPO, that’s on Ponder and it’s unlikely to happen because the whole point of GGPO is too demonstrate rollback netcode and he’s done that. On top of that the reason why FBA is used with GGPO is that it’s open source. Demul and Makaron are not open source. NullDC became open source a few years ago but development is pretty sloppy and there’s no stable ‘official’ build.
You’re free to use the free Kaillera client with Demul if you want to play those games online.
Weither Ponder is in it for the money or not, the money aspect was to motivate updates, improvements to ggpo.
Of course he would work IN CONJUNCTION with capcom to make this service happen. Also, it does not have to be rom based, we would want to have a legal form of ownership.
Like some of this stuff seems like common sense to me but, if we gotta go through the paces then I will go through them. lol
I agree with a lot of this, I am sure someone will come along and implement a mega emulator at some point that has naomi, etc included with online play. Just looking at GGPO, the foundation is already there why not expand on something that is already good?
Good business strategy guys. Invest money to make an online pvp client with roms that people are able to play for free with no pay incentives. Brilliant.
well the thing is ponder doesnt need money. im not privy to his business, but most people who have been around a bit know ponder is doing just fine. ggpo is nothing short of a gift, with donations just to help with the cause at times. i dont mean justin wong just fine, but he seems to be doing very fine. so if anything big comes from ponder via ggpo, its because he wants to pick up a new project to entertain himself and for the community, not because someone is like, hey, heres 5 grand work for me.
if we really want to see the next ggpo of the future, we will either have to get the funds to pay someone to get it poppin, or just do it ourselves. we could always start a fundraiser for the next ggpo, but unfortunately if it isnt backed by big names, it will get nowhere. ponder did this using his own knowledge and the information available out there for him, so his task isnt exactly super human, just someone has to step up and do it, or we need to pay someone to care enough to do it. ponder isnt a youngin anymore, he has grown man shit to handle and gaming is his hobby. id almost rather see him leave it up to us to build the next “ggpo” even if he could do it himself. just to force the community to grow and keep growing.
