Getting into the Tournament Hosting Scene?

So I recently went to my first official tournament held here in Minnesota, “Raging Storm”. It was a good experience the people were nice, fun to play with, and somewhat mature haha. I haven’t been into the whole tournament thing until recently. MN does not have many tournaments when it comes to fighting games, maybe shooters but I have no idea. So I was wondering if you guys think I should get into the whole hosting thing? I would love to do it, I’m 15 so still pretty young, but I do have friends who would be willing to help out. Please let me know if I should try to get into it or if I should just wait till i am a little older. I’m not sure how long the whole fighting genre is going to be popular with the whole C.O.D scene on the rise, I just hope by the time I’m old enough to do things fighters won’t be dying out.

Also, does anyone know of a good tournament bracket software I should use? I don’t mind if its cost anything just as long as it should get me by in hosting.

Minnesota has quite a few tournaments, but they happen infrequently. You should post up more in the Minnesota thread. There is going to be a tournament next week on Saturday, the 15th, in St. Paul, and a tournament at Games N Go in Rosedale Mall on the 21st on Friday… The Rosedale one should have a pretty good turnout.

By the way, you said you were at Raging Storm… I know there were a lot of people there, but who were you exactly?

Here is the MN thread: http://shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=235000

Oh mmk thanks dude. I was the black kid with the domo bag, black to write love on her arms hoodie, and I played alotta smash, they announced my name like one Micole pronounced Micheal you cant miss me in future tourneys, Ill always have that domo bag with meh. So should I post a thread like this on the MN board?

Yeah, you can post in the MN thread, especially if you want more information about the upcoming tournaments. If you want to host a tournament yourself, though, you should ask around to gauge the interest, and make sure you have enough equipment, support, and time to do it. If you’re new to tournaments, then I’d suggest to wait a bit before hosting your own tournaments. Just get a good enough feel for the “tournament atmosphere,” then you’ll know what to expect when trying to run a tournament.

The hardest part of hosting is getting a Venue, I’d be hosting tournaments like mad if I just had a place, my house is great for friends and all, but not many people can pull of hosting a tournament at home, specially if they’re living with mom and pop.

As far as getting people to come, we here at SRK pretty much have that covered for you. Find a local lann center that would be ok with at most 50+ people coming, or maybe even reserve a hotel, just be sure you have enough spots to pay off the money that went in. (unless money is really no issue for you)

Also, research how to best host an event. Make sure you have what you need, or that people can bring what you need, make sure the people that you are renting the place from knows what it will entail. Also, know the people that are coming and what they already like. If you try and throw a SSFIV tournament and say everything will be 3/5 with 60s time limit, that wont fly. Make sure you know the preffered rules of every game.

By hosting a tournament you are doing a lot of good for your community. You are letting people test and judge themselves, letting people test their community so they know where they rank, you allow them to get together, know how they do outside of the online scene, and you get people known through out the entire SRK community a little better. If someone gets close to winning they start to think maybe it’s a little more worth it to head out to a bigger, far off tournament.

I commend your efforts, goodluck.
