"Gettin' that Bike $!" AE Balrog Match-up Thread

Just read the first page… Just want to add a minor correction for the Hakan bit:

Hakan’s EX-SPD is not throw invincible.

I believe Rog might actually have more range on his regular throw than unoiled Hakan? Either way Unoiled Hakan can actually get bullied by jabs/throws… it’s pretty funny/sad.

Against unoiled Hakan’s wake-up, walk right out of throw range right before he gets up… everything Hakan has will whiff, and you get to pressure for free. Let the mindgames/baits/whatever begin.

i’m 100% sure non-oiled ex.spd is not throw invincible, but tests in super led me to believe that oiled ex.spd had some throw invincibility. Then i didn’t have a meaty throw setup. It stands to reason that he wouldn’t have a throw invincible ex.spd though. I’ll put it on the list to check again

Hakan’s only throw invincible moves are his ultras, MK-super, and oiled EX-dive.

I main Hakan and I get thrown out of EX-SPD all the time… it drives me crazy lol

ahh, confirmed then. You could pre-jump cancel your specials to give them throw invincibility, but they’d lose to anything active near enough to your hurtbox.

As a Hakan main what are your thoughts on the Balrog matchup. Aside from how silly it is for Balrog to pressure hakan while crouching. How important is oil and how does it change the flow of the match in your opinion?

Hey guys, check out the video thread.i left a video of a ft5,i had against a vega. Please critique. Thanks 3n1g for the tips.

I’ve played some sets with Kimo, the undisputed best Hakan on the west coast. I used to get bodied by him super hard. You just need to make sure he doesn’t get oiled. Hakan’s strongest tool is his oiled lvl 1 focus into his shoulder into oil slide. For me , i just stay right on his ass. walk him into a corner and punish any desperation oils he does as hard as possible. When he’s oiled and pressuring you, and doesn’t have ultra, go for a random EX headbutt between his strings to try and get him afraid to press buttons so much. Other than that, cr mp is the most consistant anti-air for hakan. All in all, oiled Hakan has one of the more frustrating ground game pressure out of all the characters. Just make not letting him oil your top priority, and dont be afraid to play chicken when he is oiled.

Won’t know until we try.

well…looks like rog can do overhead>cmp>headbutt on most characters now

overhead>c lp>c lk>headbutt also works too

Can’t use c.mp>headbutt on all characters. Some you have to use c.lk>headbutt. Example: viper

Now he can get headbutt off overhead on everyone =D

Overhead>cr.mp>headbutt on crouching Blanka!

it’s been too long since i’ve played Dhalsim, got hit with a sick setup :[

it’s bwd.throw, ex.fb, tk.p-teleport, U2

If done right, the fireball is hella ambiguous, it’s timed so that the U2 is still active when you exit hitstun/blockstun, so if you’re not holding up after you block or get hit by the Ultra you get grabbed. :[ just FYI, i’ll probably upload the match eventually. Just remember you have to block away from sim, the timing means everything, it doesn’t help that he’s invisible while he’s teleporting.

Hey guys, I have been having a lot of problems against this Blanka player

I try not get knock down in this match up but once I’m knocked down I become free and eat all kinds of mix-ups.
I know some of the moves used against me were punishable like a lp blanka ball and hops.
I also used wrong combo enders against a crouching Blanka like a buffalo head-butt.
Is there a way to shut down Blanka from starting his offense?

Don’t get knocked down

Punish harder. Video says winners finals, so I assume play level is high. Don’t expect to win if you don’t punish hard enough

Once again, don’t get knocked down. It also looks like you are holding your charge all the time, and trying to dash punch him. This gives him a spacing advantage because he knows you are charging, so don’t make it so obvious. Good Blankas know that you can punish alot of their stuff, so I don’t know if holding your charge is viable against a good blanka. Plus your normals can hang with all of Blanka’s moves, so try playing a footsie strategy to prevent getting outspaced and knocked down.

Didn’t see you use C jab, but I think that helps alot in that matchup. It can help shut down his blanka balls.

Thank you for the advice rrr.
I will spend more time on the lab.

Ok guys,

got some bad news… Supposedly Akuma now has an ublockable against Rog.

My good friend was just telling me.

…well he did have one in AE right, fwd.throw into the corner, 2x fwd.dash into j.lk? wasn’t that on 100% of the cast?

From my perspective these are the two things that made you do not so good in that match:
[]You didn’t punish at obvious opportunities, this is why he walked all over you IMO.
[
]you were frustrated, or at least whatever emotional state you were in made you predictable
Okay with that out of the way, you started every round without a game plan. The Blanka player saw that when the round started. You just stood there (possibly getting down-charge) and did nothing. Think of it this way: you need to be a bit beyond the edge of blanka’s jump range to be able to consistently defend against his shenanigans from neutral, this will be just beyond max distance for his slide, and lp.ball. Those are his safest ways to get in, but he didn’t have to use any of those because you let him hop in/jump in for free.

Don’t get me wrong, i’m not trying to bash you or anything, you did well. But you let him control a match in which he doesn’t have the tools to control. You didn’t control any of the space around you; this is why you got knocked down repeatedly and this is how he got in. Don’t be afraid to trade with your AA’s. True, blanka and balrog are about even on stamina, but you’ve got more ways to get your damage than him. You should go into training mode and figure out how you can punish each of his moves and at what range. Blanka shouldn’t get the opportunity to really press any buttons other than electricity, everything else for the most part is unsafe or punishable in some shape fashion or form. (and even electricity is punishable under certain circumstances).

Also in the first match when he did U1, you had the down-charge, meter, and spacing to do an ex.hb to beat him clean. Check this out, and it may give you an idea of how the match looks, check out the video, look at his meter and see how his game plan changes, especially in the corner.

edit: looking back on the video, i didnt’ do so well, but maybe/hopefully it helps.

Constructive criticism is always welcome on my side, thanks 3nigmat1c.

does your friend know the setup for the unblockable?

happy to be helpful, might not be a waste of time to go on XBL or PSN and both every ranked blanka from 1 on down until someone says they’ll do sets with you. that’ll get your exp up for sure.

yea. he told me yesterday. i’ll ask him to later again and I’ll write it down for you.

Thanks. Also, while on the topic of unblockables, it was once described to me like this: unblockables are like delayed meaty jump-ins, so against Balrog they’re still safe jumps, but you’re allowed to move for one frame (thus why you have to just-frame block) and that’s what shifts them for the cross-up when you’re holding backwards or forwards. So just-frame blocking gives them time to either land in front of behind you and block; making their setup more predictable (i.e. when just frame blocking some characters will always land in front or always land behind, for some characters it doesn’t matter).
