Regular 5f safe jumps work against everything but Seth’s ex.spd which is strike invincible. I think it has shitty range (Seth’s ex.spd 1.13, Mak’s ex.karakusa 0.93, Abel’s ex.tt is 1.27), so if you safe jump him with the right spacing, it’ll whiff (think Makoto’s safe jump: fwd.throw, cr.mk, walk forward, j.hp/hk).
There’s this as well as the MU, i wrote for Seth:
Personally, the Seth mixup is incredibly hard for balrog to deal with since he can beat headbutt with delayed dp or ex.dp. In those cases, if you’re caught in the mixup, guess (IMO, there’s not much else you can do in those situations). If he doesn’t have meter a delayed ex.hb will beat all of his options except block. Otherwise, just do you best to get out of the mixup without taking as much damage. TAP works well unless he goes for a throw. Unthrowable TAP may work, but it’s hard to get in a match, and then it’ll lose to delayed spd as only the pre-jump frames are throw invincible. As above, you’ve got options mid-screen, but in the corner, you’re eating the mixup.
I say Cody now, only because he has an answer to blocked lp.ds (cr.lk). At least for me, i like to get as much chip damage as possible in my block strings, but with Cody, because he can reversal cr.lk blocked lp.ds and pretty much all of Balrogs specials on block (Except ex.ru), I feel it’s a bit more difficult.
I think it’s possible to buffer in an OH, but the input is silly. You’d have to do a setup like fwd.throw, TAP, meaty cr.mk buffered ex/hp.oh, it might work. I’ve seen meaty jab buffered OH connect on a backdash.
Hello everyone been reading this thread for a bit now and found out some really cool stuff but there’s one thing I’ve started to struggle with and thats the Chun matchup since I never really played any decent Chun’s before I wasn’t really aware but that matchup is hella hard especially if she gets meter for super, any tricks available to me to help me out other than once I get the lifelead turtle like I would be the last turtle on earth?
Another funny thing is I have never actually seen Balrog do a crossup but then while playing against my buddy I was somehow able to land a j.hk crossup on Vega, granted he was crouching but I still thought that was really weird and first and only time I have seen that. Video link is here If any of you more experienced Balrog users could explain this to me it would be immensely apreciated!
It’s definitely a cross-up, there aren’t too many reproducible situations where j.hk can cross-up. A known one is against Fuerte in the corner is: with fuerte deep in the corner have him block cr.hk, then reversal U2, Balrog recovers in time to jump out of the way, but if you hold up+forward, and do j.hk, even though he’s under you, it will still hit him and cross him up. You can do j.hk, Ultra (Jav1ts found this out in Super). It looks really crazy. But in general, it’s because of fuerte’s hitbox during U2’s recovery, it’s low to the ground, but it’s really wide, so it’s actually further back than it looks visually (at least this is what i think).
But in general, it was only because he was crouching, if he’d been standing, he would have been able to block it, and further more, balrog wouldn’t be able to get behind him to be in a cross-up situation because of the hitboxes that can’t intersect. http://www.eventhubs.com/images/2010/may/19/visual-guide-understanding-super-street-fighter-4s-hit-box-data/ Look at the yellow boxes with the blue outlines “the clipping box”. When Vega’s standing his clipping box forces balrog to land in front, while when he’s crouching, balrog can keep traveling horizontally and land behind.
IMO, 80% of t. hawks can be beat with hp.hb/cr.hp, there’s absolutely no reason to attempt to rush down T. Hawk, NONE. You’ve got no reason to jump either. high level t.hawks are scary, meaty cross-up Condor dive, is difficult. Check out this post from a long time ago though. Discussion starts afterwards:
In addition, you have to show t.Hawk early in the match that you know when to use headbutt versus cr.hp. At that point, his ONLY ways to get in will be ambiguous condor dives that may make cr.hp or headbutt whiff. headbutt will whiff if he just jumps in the air and doesn’t do condor dives, where headbutt will hit if he dives (but cr.hp will whiff). There’s a lot of ranges for that, just don’t be afraid to backdash instead of attempting to block in case he whiffs since he recovers instantly. backdashing forces you to lose your spacing since you’re pushing him close to the corner so he can’t do ambiguous jump-ins or condor dives. But at low to mid level i think that’s how the match happens.
well, i mean both. The best spacing in the matchup for my strategy, is with T. Hawk’s back in the corner, where you can sit just inside the last quarter of his jump range, so you can AA consistently with hp.hb and cr.hp. So if you backdash, you lose your spacing and he gets the ability to space you midscreen and do the ambiguous jumps with condor dives and normals (to make your AA’s whiff so he can SPD you).
So by backdashing, you do A) lose your spacing so he can do ambiguous condor dives and B) possibly push yourself closer to the corner where he can possible ex.condor dive (i still don’t know if it has any invincibility), but i will assume that it’s easier to cross-up in the corner.
How do you guys feel about Balrog versus Guile in 2012? I’m looking for a solid counterpick against Ryu with Bison but I’m naturally worried about Guile aswell.
