how do you guys feel about Ken far stand fierce and crouch fierce as counterpokes against Dudley. are these actually good or am I imagining things?

far fierce is pretty much all hit i think. like ryu’s, except ken’s is a bit quicker overall i think.
makes some sense vs dudley. he has a low jump arc and a lot of his moves have hurtboxes pretty high up (where far fierce hits).
i think i’d mostly be scared of him doing some kind of ducking + whatever and raping me if he anticipated it.
but peppered throughout i don’t see why not really.
crouch fierce is a great move but slow as balls recovery. so if you do that within range where he might poke at you, he’s just going to react and poke into whatever, with low strong or something i dunno (i don’t know shit about playing as dudley).

yeah I’d say to make crouch fierce worthwhile, buffer jinrai from it similar to how ryu players buffer ex joudan. its got a grip of recovery so imo if you’re not buffering something beefy its not really worth it, better to whiff punish.
i like far fierce as pre emptive anti air, thats it
good thoughts, thanks. just going through all the options since I really don’t do well against Dudley once he gets on top of me. which I guess is kind of the idea, but something I especially suck at.

Far fierce is pretty good for stuffing jumps/pokes early. I tend to abuse it alot vs the bigger characters. Seems safer then stand forward too.
it can hit dudley as he lowers his head for c.hk, which is one of the options dudleys tend to think of when they see you using high moves that prevent him from jumping. also, it has deceptively low recovery, so if dudley parries it on the way up, unless he’s ready to do early j.hk you probably aren’t going to get hit from anything else. dudley’s jump arc is in vertical range of far hp for every part of it except the peak, but be wary of j.hk raising his hitbox.
it’s also effective against urien’s s.mk. you can see some kens using it in videos (i’m thinking of some deshiken matches from an old coop cup) just outside of that range, because urien has nothing else that will reach, and the priority system works in ken’s hp’s favour in that trade. outside of dudley, urien, and hugo, i don’t use the move.
personally, i always felt that c.hp was a sloppy move to use outside of punishment or rare anti-air situations. i never tried buffering it into something but i still don’t think i want to use it.
Buffering c.HP into light SRK is a nice anti-air parry surprise. Mix it up with medium SRK once they adapt their parry to the quick double parry, and watch them fail the second parry on the mp.SRK for good laughs.
I always thought Ken’s st.MK was a more annoying poke rather then his Fierce’s.
Depends on what you’re up against. Ken’s mk isn’t actually safe. It just looks hella safe and feels hella safe. (http://ensabahnur.free.fr/BastonNew/index.php?id=11). Spaced right though, it is hella safe but I hate it’s hit box and really only use it to stuff jumps. I find myself whiffing it a lot against the normal sized characters but far more useful against Hugo, Alex, Dudley, and Urien.
Coincidentally it works against the characters I main…
I should pick up Makoto but I think it’s too late for me to learn a new character.

ryu’s standing mk is an amazing poke. like a laser beam.
akuma’s is more or less the same
ken’s is really awful compared to either.
Ken’s twds.mk sets up the same situation more or less as his s.mk. If done at the right distance, it’s a good instant mixup creator.

I almost never see dudes use st.MK as Ryu/Akuma except against Sean.
I often see Ryu players do c.mp, s.mk, micro-pause, shakanetsu
As an Akuma player, I used s.mk against a lot of random shit. If Chun tries to whiff punish it with c.mk, she trades instead and puts you at a safer distance. Thing is, nobody expects that s.mk to come out… It just gets put there and dudes are like, “oh shit, this motherfucker’s foot is in my dick”… Mostly because they think you’ll go for c.mk, so if they try to parry it, they hit down and get smacked for it. IT’s good to maintain your ground and keep your spacing decent.

Tebbo is building up far stand mk a bit too much (as hes prone to doing lol) but hell yeah its a great poke. Its a very good anti shoto c.mk poke. It’s also kinda nice in very specific anti air situations. Just in general its good because it has long range and goes over low pokes. Sadly its -frames on block

its a great poke that’s all i meant.
it beats anything it hits. if someone can find something that hits as large an area as safely (range wise) i’d be really surprised.
and like you said goes over low forward and hits vs shotos.
some dudes dont use it as much. i dont think any of the current strong ryu players use it much. watch like namijin though and you’ll see plenty of far mk. like pherai said, especially against other shotos but really against everyone its great.
