You should only NOT quick roll to ruin certain setups your opponent wants to do.
Like midscreen ken and Gouki for example.
Otherwise it’s free meter and gets you more time to escape from okizeme pressure.

To add-on to what Ryan said
By not quick rising you are letting your opponent chose their most ideal spacing which is generally a bad thing. (eg a character like makoto is generally going to leave you inside karakusa range but outside of your throw range)
Generally at higher levels of play not quick rising is only done to avoid specific setups (ambiguous jump-in/ground cross-ups, etc)
- This is interesting. I used to feel the same way until I had watched a couple replays of my matches and examining certain key moments. Notably against Twins, Akuma, Urien, Ibuki and Denjin Ryu there were moments in the match where I shouldn’t have quick rolled. Against Urien, Denjin (and Necro) I fell like screen positioning/space is a important aspect of the matchup and in some cases I’d rather keep screen position in favor of acquiescing Oki. Twins, Akuma and Ibuki is a matter of setups and rhythm that the match had took on.
Maybe it’s just a bad assertion on my part but I think the extra space I was giving up lead to me being in the corner quicker and the corner is death. It’s definitely food for my thoughts. *

we have a general 3s thread ?! whoa
i saw OE in the title and never bothered with it é_é
anyway…yes - sometimes (not often) is a good idea to not quick rise
certain characters usually always try to cross you up (ken midscreen / twins corner etc) and by not rolling you might throw off their timing
same when you are still grounded and the aegis is already above you
in the corner eh - midscreen is always better to get up asap against aegis, imo
it’s very situational but not a bad idea
in other cases it’s pretty mandatory
example
if you quick roll as necro vs dudley, specially when you’re close to the corner,he can ground crossup you and catapult you into hk xx ex machinegun hell
very nasty
ryan - did you get to see / play the legendary hey no pink makoto ?
So one more question I’ll ask to provoke a dialog and this one is not related to the mechanics at all. I’ve noticed this online since I first got into 3S and wanted to seriously learn it. I’ve also noticed this at American tournaments.
Why is it that at the start of the round 9 times out of 10 that American players will immediately run away and try to bait the other guy to come at them?
I get it with certain characters and in certain matchups like Yun will runaway to whiff meter build and I get that. Chun will play keepaway because she’s a cunt and I get that. Oro has a good overall footsie game with a fireball and stHk is a good poke and I get that. Remy and Elena tend to space and mix that up with being aggressive and keeping them out and I get that. But why the fuck do so many guys just play keepaway especially at the start of the round? Because you could watch just about any high level Japanese match vid and in that vast majority of the matches the players rarely play keepaway at the start of the round.
Is this something that Americans have been doing since forever in SF in general? Is this a virus caught by playing SF4? Could it be dumb people imitating other dumb people (which I admit is a problem with society on the whole rather than just fighters)? I don’t know so I’m asking you guys.
That seems like a better safe than sorry mentality. But honestly, that doesnt need to be something bad.

Is anyone bringing any streaming shit to Evo? I’d love to watch the Room Battles that’ll be going down.

For lower levels, it might be because they’d rather not risk coming on to the other guy and getting their stuff parried. Something like an “I’d rather parry your shit and punish you and not the other way around.”

It would be cool for sure but there’s probably a -30% chance that will happen.

That means money!
Hey so I’m not going to be going. Unless there’s like some miracle and a friend happens to be going to vegas this weekend and I bum a ride with him and he covers drinks and gas for me. Which is very unlikely.
Have fun and slap the condom on!

After doing a bunch of research we are pretty sure we can use the method described by that guy who was cracking CPS3 or whatever to buy two 2I boards and make a 3s board out of it. my friend is also reasonably sure he can build a custom supergun for about $100. So altogether once you buy the 2I kits, build the supergun, and make two sticks that match the versus city layout, I think we can do it all for under $500. at the end you should have a 3s CPS3 board that has no security lockout issue (so no worrying about battery) that plays on any CRT with composite or S Video inputs and a pair of sticks that match the layout of the real thing.
we’ve ordered most of the stuff we need and will be assembling everything over the next month. at the end of the journey I’ll post about our results and if we were successful I’ll write up a how to for anyone who wants to do the same.
My friend has done most of the research with this, but I’ll post what he said about it.
Apparently 3s requires one more SIMM than any other cps3 game. Also Capcom made custom ones with the cps3 so you need the same type they created and the easiest source is a second cps3 board. He said something like jojos would work fine also for the extra SIMM slot but you want 2I for the base since there’s a glitch with the copy protection and the battery dying won’t actually do anything.
I’m taking his word on most of this but we’ll see at the end. If he turns out wrong about any of it I’ll post about it here too.

Ok, understand. I asked cause that sounds a bit like ‘it’s a vs city so we need 2 motherboards’ :d
I think it’s easier and cheapest to find a dead motherboard (of any game) than another working 3.2 to only get that supplementary SIMM.
Btw, if you find another SIMM, be sure it’s a 128M one…

Sweet.
Good luck bob. At one time I was inquiring around about superguns but never heard back :<
Wow 2nd Impact has a widescreen mode. Didn’t know they had 16:9 monitors for arcade games at that time.
this sounds like a good idea. if I were more patient I think this is actually the way to go.
fastest assured way I could find to get 2I was through coinopexpress, and you have to hit that minimum $200 window. so for me it made sense to just get 2 copies of 2I. on the bright side I guess it means we have backups of everything if a piece of hardware fails.
here’s the first bit of bad news - 2x 2I kit + shipping ends up being $377 for me. so coming in under $500 may actually not be realistic for us. however I do believe it is still possible - you just need to find a CPS3 kit for an acceptable price, then find a dead one cheap for the extra SIMM like ESN mentioned. if you can get it from the US and not through coinopexpress you should save huge on shipping as well.
