Gen General Discussion Thread: Theory Fighter!

as long as the connection is green bars it should work properly if you tech late.

it should also work if you plink the lk with lp but usually i dont plink it that way

Hey i’m sure this has been visited a couple of times (and if this isn’t really a find…moving on), but this may make connecting Crane U2 after Oga easier/consistent. Connecting U2 is easier if you hit with a close/far oga at max distance so you hit the ground sooner and recover. These were three setups that were pretty consistent, i have a feeling that the oga crossup setups will do the same.

TKF=Tiger knee forward, TKB=Tiger knee backwards
(1) Gen in corner, forward throw, lk far oga, TKF.U2
(2) Op in corner, back throw, lk close oga, TKF.U2
(3) Max distance far mk/hk.oga TKB.U2 (this works midscreen too)

Obviously these can be blocked, but if you combine it with cross-up oga it may make it more viable.

**tests done with Dictator/M.Bison

wasn’t it concluded that it was way too inconsisted to hit in the first place back when super came out? It’s not like it’s an instant sjc burnkick haha.

That’s what i mean, this is a consistent setup. I mean my execution is shit, but I got it 2/3 times. A max distance oga lets you TK into U2 and hit consistently, and if you miss it’s safe :confused: And a cool thing is that the max distance setups make Oga safe(ER) since you hit them around the ankle area. Just try it. I didn’t spend too much time with it, but I got it more than once, and that’s saying alot from when I first attempted to combo into Teiga.

I can’t get it even once and I ocnsider my execution very highly.

I’m doing the same movement I’d do when I use Viper sjc burnkick so it should work according to you, doesn’t seem that reliable in the heat of battle unless it can be done after a cross-up oga or something.

edit: well it works, but it isn’t very easy to pull of especially considering ho0w highly situational these setups are, going to test it with the walkforward oga cross-up soon.

You might have the rhythm wrong, you’re kinda buffering it into the recovery from oga, so delay the button press a bit. It’s no where near as fast as vipers sjc into ultra…or Ibukis for that matter. More like Dhalsim’s tk into U2. I made a vid, it took me about a minute and a half to find it again. 2nd link skips all my non-execution.

How do you do the TKB motion again? Your video is impressive.

It’s the same motion as Sagat Tiger knee, Vipers instant burnkick and such.

Assuming you are facing Left to right. Here are a few versions.

Method 1 - :d::df::r::uf::r::df::d::df::r::3k:

This is the classic way to Tiger Knee. This version is the one I’ve always used.

Method 2 - :d::df::r::uf::u::ub::l::db::d::df::r::3k:

This is basically like trying to do a 360 move in the air. I

Or a short-cut version of Number 2

Method 3 - :d::df::r::uf::db::d::df::r::3k:

Here is a short cut version of Method 2.

I hope this helps.

Maybe its just me but I dont know how I feel about this set up. I mean you have your opponent in the corner, then your letting them out and relying on landing a standard Oga that it looks like they can punish if they just stand block and even if they cant now your in the corner.

I’d only use this for show during casuals. I’d rather keep it to force them to stay out of the air and possibly allow me to jump in. If they are paying attention they will know that Gen can use it vs their AA’s so should allow for a free jump in.

I always use Teiga vs Sim and Guile. It beats Guile when he Boom/Jump air throw, or Boom, AA. Also if you can bait a flash kick by jumping back out of range it will punish him hard. Plus a lot of Guiles like to Boom on your wake up and Mantis Ultra 2 works wonders vs them if they do it a bit too late, that’s why you quick stand then perform it.

Vs sim it forced them not to use their teleport as much if they are smart; furthermore, if they fireball and try to use standing HK as their AA or any AA it should stop them from doing it, if it doesn’t use it just before they would perform their AA. Also, very good sim’s will use his Air-to-Air normals to keep you out, if you have Teiga stocked you should have them no problem.

Yeah I spent about 3 hours getting my ass whipped versus Guile yesterday, I think I won like 3 out of 10 in 4 sets, with a local player and towards the end I started rethinking my stance about the ultras in this match. I stayed with U1 set for all of it because of the damage possibilities but Guile AAs Gen so free in fireball footsie shutting that down seemed to be worth the loss of easy big damage situations.

Guile can be a real pain in the ass definately.

However, no matter how godlike his airthrow is Gen’s crane j.hp actually can beat it if you delay your hit somewhat from what you’d normally do. If you ever face a Guile that keeps jumping after a sonic boom, crane j.hp is the answer. U2 Teiga kind of sucks against Guile imo, because his recovery on sonic booms is mad fast…

Yeah in prior sessions I had not once gotten Crane U2 to hit a boom on reaction. The only time it hit was on a guess EX boom. Thats why I originally went back to the U1 set but he learned the spacing for AAs on Gen quickly so getting in is a pain. Thats what sucks even more though is I do get in at least once usually twice but Gen doesnt have a great way to deal big damage in those situations without super. To be fair though my frame of reference is Abel. So Guile takes damage, gets back out and usually the match finishes with me trying to get back in.

you don’t Teiga when he booms. You Teiga when he booms and jumps in, or you jump in and he tries to AA. I never try to teiga his booms on reaction.

Airthrow is a nightmare to me, not just Guile’s but anyone’s except for Guy’s Izuna. I seem to always get grabbed out no matter how much I try sticking something out. I’m sure I get grabbed out of active frames. The exceptions seem to be mantis j.MP&j.HK and crane j.HK, and the times when I actually counter them out.

As long as you know his pattern, you can also guess U2 out of Boom. Mad difficult though.

random topic change.

japanese gens are good and all. so are a lot of the players right here.

someone tell me why i never see any gens utilizing hit confirms into giekro as a BnB. not that its the best way or anything, i just want to understand why in almost every gen vid, the gen ends his combos in hands except when its from an FADC, when he has options for more dmg and better positioning

hoigek for example is very inventive, and obviously has top notch execution, but his bnb is crlk, crlp, stfpxxxhands. not nearly the dmg he could be getting

Here’s my thought on why they tend to do that.

From what I have seen so far, most BnBs have the followings:

  1. The last move is safe on block
    1-2. If not safe on block, then is FADCable
    1-3. If not safe on block and is not FADCable, then is a move that stays grounded and make some space between you and the opponent.
  2. Is not character specific.

Since Gen doesn’t have a 3-frame or 4-frame link between normals or into Gekiro (eg. jab -> SRK), maybe they see it as not too safe. Or they don’t trust online latency enough to have faith in 1-frame or 2-frame links and choose to go for a safer special.

Let’s not forget all of Gen’s higher damage combos are either range dependent or requires FADC (eg. s.MP -> s.MK xx anything, s.MP -> s.HP xx anything, crane c.MP -> HP Roll), so when in a match they might go for hands which doesn’t require close range since they already have a lot to think about.

I may be wrong since I’m still in low-mediocre level.

your points are valid. but the damage difference is pretty big between hands and giekro finishes. big enough to go ahead and take a chance on the extra 60 or so dmg from each combo. at least a 2 frame link.

i understand jabs and shorts as confirms because they allow time to hit confirm, and decide what you would like to do as a mixup should they block. they are more versatile than s.mp in most cases

Well, his bnb seems to contain cr.LP into st.HP, which is a 1-frame link. Maybe he doesn’t feel comfortable doing cr.LP -> st.MP.

Anyways, that’s why I’m personally practicing cr.LK xx cr.LP -> crane cr.MP xx HP Roll to use as a bnb combo, which seems to be somewhat safe on block.

Btw, my current favourite punish combo is st.MP -> st.MK xx LK gekiro. It works on all casts (except for two crouching characters) and deals decent damage. I just don’t have a recording device to upload my sh*tty matches.
