*I’m finding this really, really hard to care about. Payola isn’t a new concept. Neither is Publishers putting pressure on Journos to write favorable reviews or face pubs retracting ads on their website/mags.
If you don’t think game journos have written favorable reviews because they have friends who worked on the product, then I don’t know what to say to you. Honestly, gamers should have learned to take every review with a humongous grain of salt after the Jeff Gerstman Kane & Lynch fiasco.
Edit: I haven’t clicked on any of the videos or read what’s going on with this whole thing. I’m merely commentating on the credibility of journalism, specifically “gaming journos”. *
I personally blame big game franchises over this, nowadays printed game mags are all but dead, game sites make their money through ad revenue so they will post any bullshit and take any money they are offered up for a bias review, most peeps are on sites being fan boys reading about the games they already know and defending them against other morons, shit, if it wasnt for freight trains of the like of GTA/Ubishite games/EA sport shite/ COD/BF shite all these sites would be empty and outta buisness.
Best site for news honestly is probably Gaf/GF cause at least you get fresh news about the titles you wanna play and demo and not just the expected annual release of some bullshit youll buy anyway to stay trendy.

Yeah, I know a lot of people still rely on reviews for their gaming purchases. In my area, capped internet is very much a thing so even when a demo is available, it’s not always a wise idea to download it.
Even if this wasn’t the case, this whole debacle shines a light on just how corrupt this industry has become. The whole reason people stopped taking print publications seriously is because everyone became aware that there was no separation between the ad room and the news room. Everyone became aware that reviewers were being treated to lavish hotels and expensive meals at vacation hotspots by publishers. That’s how old media died, it’s why print magazines are a rarity these days. It’s not just that the internet is out there, it’s that we can rely on the internet being truthful a lot more than we can magazines.
Or at least we could. Now it doesn’t even take unfathomable mountains of money to pay for ad budgets that will pressure editors who then pressure the writers, or just paying writers off directly with swag and service. Now all it takes is service, specifically service below the belt.
To everyone saying “Oh this is expected” and “It’s always happened” etc etc., that doesn’t mean it should be excused or ignored. Put pressure on it or it’ll stay the same as it always has.
If you don’t want those reviewers paid, don’t read any of their articles. Actively boycott them. If that doesn’t work, move on.
Might sound a bit random but this is kind of interesting , atleast for me who has never really cared about VG reviewers and such.

While the story is pretty funny, it has 0 importance. Depression Quest, Gone Home and other snowflake non-games were shit regardless. Gaming journalism was shit regardless.
The fact that you cannot find a single paid reviewer that is a real expert in the field he is paid to write about says everything you need to know about the VG media industry.
Ironically, game demos have statistically shown that they hurt game sales more than help.
You know what though? I’m sure if the gaming journalism industry was full of gay men they’d all be fucking each other for better reviews too.

I have to wonder if this recent situation gives us a unintentional insight to the minds of the SJW/feminist/kotaku communities. These people are constantly accusing gamers of sexism,misogyny and basically being just a few degrees short of actual rapist and abusers…yet here they are acting in unethical ways abusing their power and privilege. I have to wonder if all the accusations they charge at gamers are not in some way projections for how they really feel. The fact that 5 guys with strong feminist sentiments would do something like this makes you really question the motives and intentions behind these people.

i normally don’t ever say this, but this girl is NOT attractive. on srk its popular to take a girl whose alright looking, and saying, “oh she’s a 4 or 5 at best”. i recall there was a thread about sherry jenix, who i would ravage so hard, and guys were seeing she was a 3 or 4. i remember arguing with hobotu about it, until pimp willy came in and posted pix of hobotu posing with “girls”. this girl is no sherry jenix. i have hit girls who were about as unattractive as this zoe chick, and while i regret nothing, i was under no illusion that they were hot. i just had a lot of alcohol.

all this gaming drama reminds me of the team dick wolves drama with penny arcade. i had known nothing about it, until it trickled down to me. it struck me as a colossal waste of time. do ppl have nothing better to do than waste their time with this crap? BOTH SIDES looked bad in the PAX drama, and BOTH SIDES look bad in this drama. like seriously, spend that time trying to make the world a better place. this complete non issue will go away after 2 weeks once the new witch hunt of the month occurs.

This. We live in a society where money talks and your bullshit protesters just walk. Literally. If our industry that we love so dearly is being fucked over, we can actually make a change. Game devs/publishers make money off our backs, and they need us as a consumer as well as a gamer to continue thriving. We want change in how things are ran? Close your wallets. Let these big publishers know that if you really give a fuck about making a game worthy of my dollar. People bitch and moan about EA and Origin but, ohoho, look at all the people that still purchase their games regardless of how much of a shit company they are and their tactics.
