Gamespy servers going down May 31st. Multiple games affected, GGPO

“Effective May 31, 2014, GameSpy will cease providing all hosted services for all games still using GameSpy.
If you have any questions about how this impacts your favorite title please contact the game’s publisher for more information.
Thanks for a great ride!”

^ Even the PS3 version of 3S:OE might be affected until they decide how to match people together without the service.

^ Nice.

Not sure about you guys, but a lot of games I played this generation(and last) used Gamespy, and it’s looking like most of those games are going to get GGPO’d. Literally.

Such good memories. I actively used Gamespy a lot in the early 2000’s to play a lot of quality FPS games of that era, and to this day they were a part of a lot of the MP games I played in some way with their matchmaking service that so many publishers and developers licensed throughout the years.

Whew @ 3SOE. Had me scared for a second! xD So is the company going under or just trying to cut costs?

Goddamnit.

My most played game over the weekends is Mortal Kombat. I’ve been trying to get back in to SSFIV, but it’s just not clicking for me in terms of excitement. Damn.

Now I can’t play THPS3 online anymore

Welp, looks like I have to create a petition to convince Activision to work around this. Probably an HD re-release on console, because they never put netplay with the PC port of THPS HD.

So apparently 3S, Darkstalkers Resurrection, and MvC Origins are still safe eh?

No word yet on MK 9 being safe from the fall.

FYI:

Some games will take a hit, while others won’t.

what about rise of nations? ive been wanting to play that again.

Damn, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault is effected? The fuck? Weird, the game had its own in-game server browser that didn’t seem to be tied to Gamespy.

Multiple Battlefield games, Bad Company 2 especially, hits me right in the feels.

CoJ: Bound in Blood going offline sucks too. Thankfully, I got all the MP trophies in that game. Platinum’d BFBC2.

Edit: Quake/Unreal games have their own backend when it comes to finding servers I believe, so they should be fine(from what I heard.)

That is why I prefer a more open architecture and don’t ever want to pay for these types of services. If they need money monthly to keep their doors open eventually the game is going to go. If it has P2P/H2H options then there really isn’t that worry. Although admittedly the games likely die long before it’s a worry.

Still, original Starcraft is still going, right?

Gamespy was free to use. Thing is, their matchmaking engine was so good, big publishers and developers would license it and use it in their games. The games that were powered by GS were 99.9% F2P online.

Games that used this matchmaking backend by Gamespy are mostly not going to work anymore, because GS’s servers that would help put people together are shutting down.

Some developers/publishers are already addressing this and making it so GS isn’t needed for their games to be played online.

As for StarCraft, yeah, you can still play it online. I agree with your other point though, in that I’m not very interested in investing into a next-gen console because of the online paywalls & the fact that the servers all get killed off anyway whether you pay for them or not.
