Thank you for joining us here @ 2012, Nintendo.
That’s a REALLY REALLY good artist too seriously.
the only thing I know/care about involving NP was the Zelda comic. Weirdly enough, this little ice cream place in town has a basket of books for sale every now and then, and my friend noticed a Legend of Zelda one. “Oh hey, its the one from Nintendo Power, didn’t know they made a collected edition of it”, bought it for $1.
I still can’t find much info on it, but when I finally saw it on ebay it goes for mad money. Thanks Nintendo Power for this amazing find!
Don’t even know what this means, but I like it.
I used to sub to this for quite a few years, I think I threw them all away with my old comics like an asshole.
Anyway, they were ok, it’s really just a form of nostalgia to me now.
Game Informer was superior in the PS2s early days anyhow, but I didn’t sub to them long…anyone remember Reinhardt?
I loved Nintendo Power. I had most of their issues at one point on my bookshelf, I bought them at a garage sale.
I remember I was playing Illusion of Gaia as a kid. I got stuck on the Sky Castle forever, I just couldn’t figure it out. This was before you can just hop online and look up the answer to your problem, so I took my five dollar allowance and mailed it to them with a letter explaining I didn’t know how to get past this part and would they please send me a copy of the pertinent issue.
They sent my five dollars back, informed me that sending cash via mail was inadvisable, and explained that since I hadn’t specified which part of the castle I was stuck on, they had written up a complete walkthrough and sent it to me.
I never forgot that feeling of ‘damn, these guys are awesome’.
That’s a warm fuzzy feeling story. Also reminds me of envelope art contests they had.
Now that shit was cool.
Nintendo Power wrote me a step-by-step guide on how to beat the last boss in CastleVania III after I wrote them that I was stuck. Naturally I beat it before I got a reply, but I was amazed that they wrote a personal letter back to me (on nice Nintendo Power letterhed). It was a piece of almost every Nintendo player’s life in the late '80s and early '90s.
Almost, the moment I finally realized that the SEGA I loved was no more was seeing Sonic on the Nintendo Power cover.
I remember when I had tip sheets mailed to me for free from Sega Visions I believe it was? I’m pretty sure I still at least have a giant envelope from that.
Also the tip hotline and the hell I’m sure the video game counselors had to go through as well. And mailing nintendo a letter and drawing on the front of the envelope too. I remember doing it once and I think it was a lady writing back saying she liked my drawing of Link or something like that. Also that 1-800-255-3700 number that’s been around forrreeeeevvveerrrr. I believe that’s a actual punch out password too. But you have to hit A+ start or something with it.
Also in the previews for Mortal Kombat in nintendo power they had what I assumed was a beta screenshot/mock up too. Because it had a “0500” score above Goro’s lifebar when he was only ever playable on the gameboy version at the time.
I have to admit, I felt a twinge of sadness reading this.
RIP, NP.
Again I have to say this. Fuck this shit.
Still got my Smash Bros. Melee issue. RIP.
Never did care for Nintendo Power, it was the only magazine that I would just look at the cover and just giggle at myself at how corny it was. Much like Nintendo games themselves and the losers that play shit like Smash Bros.
Shit sounds like gay porn.
It’s ok It’s ok. Your just upset you didn’t giggle at the ghosties. Next time you’ll know how to deal with that evil enchantress.

I seriously thought about linking that video in my last post. The Nerd’s NP episode is one of my favorites, I might add.
They sent me the best CD I ever owned (the Smashing…Live! CD) for free. I was subscribed to NP for like four years, a shame to hear this. They were a huge part of my early gaming years.
Took me minute to refresh my memory, but It’s from the Howard & Nester ‘Mafat Conspiracy’ comic. You can actually read 'em all here (at least all the ones from before Howard Phillips left the mag and it just became ‘Nester’s Adventures’):

Some of the art is actually pretty good. On that topic, NP tended to hire out slumming manga artists for their comics and game sections like Shuji Imai, Benimaru Itoh, and Katsuya Terada, and few were substantially better than their actual official art.

Here’s some of Terada’s Zelda stuff:

There’s more to be found in a Google search. His Dragon Quest/Warrior art is equally amazing.
whats really sad about this is IGN is still around
nintendo power sucked once side scrollers died off and got replaced with gay 3d platformers instead i stopped reading it a long time ago. i still try to collect the old issues though. i liked the mario and zelda comics they had.
Nintendo Power started to die in the GCN(maybe) era but defiantly when the Wii came out whit it’s LOADS of shovelware.
