IIRC Justin used Guile, Cable, Cammy before that.
Don’t remember the old days too well.
Also when characters got unlocked I remember someone using IM/WM.

From what I remember Scott A (from SHGL) was the first person to use IM infinite in the USA (at least from what I remember from MWC2000)
Wasn’t this infinite used in MvC1 by WM?
I know the air infinite in MvC1 was way more popular due to setup, but I thought that occasionally people used this same ground jumping infinite if it fit the case.
:arazz: for getting -rep in this thread 2x for no solid reason. I got -rep, likely by the same hater, for writing Yomi to state that marvel has evolved by picking counter strategies alone AND simply b/c I used the following smiley: :arazz:.
Hmm…actually if my comments cause someone to take a few moments out of their life to try and hate on, I can do no more than be proud. In the words of Kat Williams, “You ain’t hittin’ on nothin’ until you have 15-20 haters on your jock.”
I welcome you.
I just want to add a couple of things:
Guard cancel was made known to the public in late 2002, early 2003. You can actually see Clockw0rk jumping out mid-HSF in the EVO2002 DVD.
Sentinel UB, which was discovered by Charlie Goblyn and AZ crew, IIRC, started to be [ab-]used sometime mid-/late-2003, I think…
Both of these, IMO, changed/shaped the way MvC2 is played today (the UB moreso than GC).
Also, not to be an asshole or anything, but a minor correction to Stilt’s “history” post. MWC2001 was early Summer (end of June), not late Spring.
To end, B-Series/Evolution has only had 3 champions: Duc Do (B4, EVO2k5), JustinW (B5, EVO2k2, EVO2k3, EVO2k4, EVO2k6), and Yipes (EVO2k7). And there has never been a consistent “runner-up,” and/or, there has never been a repeat finals any year.
Finalists (1st/2nd):
B4 = Duc/Valle
B5 = Justin/Duc
EVO2k2 = Justin/Row
EVO2k3 = Justin/Ricky
EVO2k4 = Justin/DavidL
EVO2k5 = Duc/Yipes
EVO2k6 = Justin/Chunksta
EVO2k7 = Yipes/Justin
Hope that helps.
What exactly happened to Justin in 2k5? I remember hearing all the commotion of him getting eliminated before the finals.
Awesome recap that Stilt did. I remember being at B4 and nobody (at least to my knowledge) knew you could mash out of Magneto’s tempest super. I don’t think it became common knowledge until B5. I remember Image (one of Duc’s friends I think? I also think he placed 3rd at B4) was using some form of a Magneto based team, that was basically after launch air combo > tempest.
I remember Sabin on that DVD saying Cable, Cammy, anotha.
Robzilla sent him to Losers’, then Yipes eliminated in Top 8.
Hope that helps.
holy shit Charlie goblyn discovered sent’s unblockable laser?! i know that guy WOW, didnt know he “discovered” something so big.
But as for this thread, i’ve posted this randomly but in all honesty, there are very few if ANY games that can come up with anything new after 10 or so years marvel has been out. I still watch random videos and still see “new” shit like weird as cross-ups using assist, alpha counters into DHC’s, etc. Of course there are issues with this game, and it is obviously very UNBALANCED, but as of right now plenty of fighters are horribly balanced when it comes to tourney level play.
for a Spiral player like duc to win evo during the height of top 4 dominance was simply amazing. I don’t know the exact history on say 3rd strike or cvs2, but i don’t really see a non chun or yun player, or a non a-groove bison/blanka/sakura taking a championship anytime soon (in huge events that is, i hear some C-groovers in japan won some recent tourneys but i dont have source). IT’s only natural for games out this long to develop tiers. People are going to find the things that make characters strong, and there going to abuse them. The only thing really new from 3s is maybe keeper jin’s genei jin chain, which i have yet to see used much if at all during tournament matches.
As of right now, yes MvC2 is horribly unbalanced when it comes to the whole cast. in 3s and cvs2, in casual you can still play the likes of chang, todo, kim, whatever, almost anyone in the cast. The simple fact is, tournaments and high level players should set the standard for tournaments, regardless of how unbalanced the game is in casual play. Someone just recently told me Ky’s 6HS loop in Accent core is “cheap,” which is absolutely bullshit, and it was some random dumbass who THOUGHT he knew something about the game, when he didn’t know anything. High level play should be the judge of “balance” most of the time, and look at marvels top 8. MSP’s, MSS, Clockw0rk almost made top8 this past year, SScable, Santhrax, Matrix, Duc, Scrub, Scrubclops, even though a lot of those teams have very SIMILAR set ups (santhrax and SScable both have the SS DHC 100%, and an solid anti air for example), they still give character variety MUCh more than most fighters out there.
Look at 3s again, outside of mike wakefield (no offense to the guy, great job placing top 8), the only non chun yun player you see is alex valle with ken/ryu. Even now, GGXX accent core is being dominated by eddie/slayer/testament players, and that JUST came out last year. So YES MvC2 isn’t balanced, but ALMOST any game that is out this long simply will not be, and MvC2 still has a good amount of character variety in high level, and the amazingly open ended engine keeps it the most exciting.
What the fuck are you talking about?
He says that ST is unbalanced because it has only one playable character at high levels. If you don’t ban him, it is the worst balance ever. That’s a fact.
Then he goes on to say that many chars have no practical chance vs O. Sagat. Japan agrees and soft bans O. Sagat.
His point is that balanced ST is a myth, and maybe Hd Remix will fix that.
Yeah and how many great O.Sagat players are there? ST isnt tier based its matchup based. O.Sagat has some hard matchups like the rest of them.
Akuma is the only banned char in SBO
Is there a wiki entry for the history of competitive MvC2? If not I would love to see stilt and a few others construct one, or at least with their input within this thread. Hell if not that maybe just a sticky of the history of competitive MvC2. Not this thread, but maybe just some posts of it put into another thread.
I really enjoy looking back on the stuff, and it might be insightful or entertaining for those just getting into it.
P.S. Sorry for the bump, but I don’t really see a point in making a thread specifically for it, especially since this is only a page 2 thread.
actually when I was in Hawaii during those times alotta people were using Storm/Magneto rushdown, so I say the Hawaii players discovered Magneto/Storm/Sentinel/Cable and all. This was around the time when X-Men 1 came out in the theaters.
