This issue has NOTHING to do with the complex media bar… It happens because of FACEBOOK. On each news article, there are social media widgets. Facebook’s widget is an iframe, unlike twitter’s which uses ajax. Browsers will “lock” and pages will be held hostage until all iframes are loaded.
You will probably have the same issue on http://8wayrun.com, and we don’t use the Complex Media Bar.
This is 100% correct. Use NoScript (or NotScripts on Chrome) to block SRK from loading Facebook modules = Front page loads almost instantly. Now if we could just get that ‘recent news’ box back so I can skip using the front page when I’m not at my desk.
For some reason, it doesn’t happen to me on Chrome in Linux. UNLESS I’m not on my VPN server, then it does, so it’s like Jaxel said, it has to be Facebook causing it.
I found the solution at least for IE. Apparently there are so many scripts, or excessively long loading scripts, that IE thinks that there may be a problem with the website. A registry fix solved the problem for me, although the front page took 30 seconds or so to load because it was hanging on loading up a .png file. I didn’t search for a solution earlier because this was literally the only site on the web that I was having problems with but today the same thing happened with testyourmight. I am not sure what these sites are doing that is so different than the rest of the world but anyhow here is a link to the fix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/175500
Actually it hangs for like a minute sometimes so it still sucks but the fix does work. Just open a separate browser page and do other stuff while you wait for it to load. I really hope they find a way to fix whatever is causing this because it has drastically cut down the amount of time I spend on SRK and it’s my favorite website.
Another tip is to right click and open any articles in a new tab. This way you aren’t navigating away from the front page which means you won’t have to wait for it to reload. The article pages all load up quickly. My experience is that the hanging problem only happens with the front page.
I simpy stopped going to the Front Page and I use the srk/forums url. Besides, nothing of interest is on the front page anymore…maybe I’ll try to fix it but doesn’t really affect me…
I can’t blame you Dinoz but the fix does work. Just open another window to browse while you wait for the main page to load up. I’m just happy to be able to use the front page again.
I normally don’t have this problem, but I just started getting it really badly today, I tried loading up an SRK article (more specifically, the one about Capcom’s schedule at NYCC ) and it completely locked up for several minutes. (windows 7, newest version of Chrome)
Peculiarly, I could mostly use the tabs open on my browser on other websites, but all of the SRK tabs I had open were totally locked up for several minutes until the article’s page decided to behave.
It’s the stupid complex media bar. That thing screws up your history so you can’t go “back” in IE9. Sorry, normally I don’t called things stupid, but …that thing is stupid.
when are they going to fix this problem? i have literally been unable to go on anything besides the forums on SRK for like a month. With UMvC3 out i feel like i am missing an a**load of information because i can’t load up the site. its VERY frustrating : P
can we get a fix on this thing soon?
@Jakelin i tried the link you provided and it’s still doing the exact same thing. i try to load it up and a second later the “stop running this script” window pops up. i can’t click yes or no and it just freezes…
Welcome to loading a billion scripts for no reason. SRK front page is sweet, between a million news stories that are worthless and the billion scripts that crash multiple browers. Sweet site, bro. Front page will also randomly log you out. Totally super sweet.
