Friends Hating Because I Play Chun

It’ll be better against zoners like you mentioned and the max range to use it from is farther than st. MP range, so I expect them to behave differently at that range as well. If anything, with another option available, the opponent will have more to think about which gives more room to harass them with whatever they’re not paying attention to. One of the other differences would be whether you’re in their face or if you push them away on block and that’s ultimately up to where the Chun player wants to be during the round, but I think it’s a plus to be able to make that choice easier.

My experience with HSU and FA-happy opponents…

Mid to upper-mid tier players using characters with a decent enough focus will love to FA from around sweep to mid-screen range. They’re fishing for a sweep or some single poke they can either crumple or dash through. Aggressive footsie Bisons love to FA dash forward from sweep range. If your opponent is dashing forward you can just wait a bit before pressing buttons and then smack them out of the forward dash. If they dash back, let them go and push the screen forward. EX Kikoken gets them either way, and if they’re close enough to the corner and you have U1 stored, punish them for their blasphemy. Chun can also jump - against taller characters like Sagat j.fp gets the full 2 hits to break the Focus. Empty jump into throw is very effective, and for shenanigans use stomp to bounce over the opponent and potentially punish a FA whiff. While staying on the ground Chun can utilize her fast walk/dash speed to just throw them out of it or even dash EX Legs.

High level players don’t go to FA that often, especially outside of sweep range. Sometimes you might get a fireballer who makes you really feel a fireball is coming but they do FA instead. Outside of sweep range they’ll wait for a Chun fireball, forward jump, or Hasanshu, all things that are very punishable on reaction. They may occasionally do brief FA stances in sweep range, either fishing for that sweep to crumple or looking for something to dash through.

So I feel that if random FA stances are blowing up your game you’re being too predicable/not creative enough. To me EX HSU is a lazy solution for a problem that already had solutions. And HSU is kind of a non-issue beyond sweep range as great players are going to be looking for it to punish. I think I mentioned once Naruo hitting me with U2 when I tried a random footsie HSU. We’d played 4-5 games at that point and I’d never done a post-sweep-range HSU, so I figured I could try it since it might come as a surprise. Nope.

So for me, MK/HK long ranged HSU is solely for fireball/other whiff punishes, and my primary use for the move is to try and catch people sticking out low pokes close range, or to counter crouch tech/throw tech. This is why before EX HSU armor break I wanted extra frames on hitstun so that if you do catch someone with LK HSU it’s easier to combo into c.lk for a combo. Maybe this is just specific to my playstyle, but fighting against people here in Japan I’ve had to rapidly develop anti-FA gameplans and really be careful about my HSU usage in general.

…My other gripe with the EX HSU thing is that EX HSU is actually not all that difficult to avoid. If Chun is doing it from max range backdashing out of the FA will cause her to miss it anyway. If she’s doing it in close it can be made to whiff by starting the backdash right before the active frames of EX HSU kick in - the backdash invincible frames causes the EX HSU to miss. And within that range Chun is close enough to walk-up throw, quite possibly c.hp x Legs, s.mp x EX Legs, jump, etc. So I’m really not that thrilled about this buff after all.

Like I said before, the buff isn’t going to pan out the way they intend it to, but it’s going to be useful against zoners.

If by “they” you mean CAPCOM, CAPCOM don’t intend it to do anything, they’re adding it because it was one of the most requested buffs, along with the df.lk buff, it was on the list of buffs the facebook group asked for, which got linked to multiple times in the buff thread.

I don’t know why, I agree it’s a silly buff that will only make her more annoying to play against at mid level, not actually any better at high level, but it’s what people asked for, so it’s what she’s getting.

And while I’m here, that is a ridiculous argument. Some of the best characters in the game are females. Viper, Sakura, and Cammy, to name a few. Then there are some very good Rose players, Ibuki is very good, and Makoto is solid. Pretty much the only female character who isn’t at least decent or better is Juri, and even she’s pretty scary in the right hands.

I haven’t quite made myself comfortable with the male half of the cast either. My alt is supposed to be Honda, but my performance is on-and-off at best.

Lord knows I tried Ryu, Abel, Rufus, and gief for a time.
