Unreal Tournament 2004 is so godlike. Played that shit competitively for 5 years, and still play it every now and then. Do any of you guys that have listed it still play it?
Watching high level Q3 is sublime. That game is rank 0. It isn’t even fair to other FPS games to compare it to other games cause it’s so perfect that not even id could make a better game if they had a million years. I mean even their team and CTF modes are awesome while having the undoubtedly best 1v1 mode of any FPS. Like hardware manufacturers go home crying themselves to sleep at night knowing that there will never be a dueling game that they can use to host tournaments and show off their new hardware because of Q3’s existence.
The original TF2 in its first-released state. No items, no hats, no extra nothing.
So to the people who aren’t putting Tribes on their list…did you play Tribes? There’s a reason why those of us who played that incredibly challenging and brutal game constantly rave about it.

3: Unreal Tournament (better than Quake 3, only problem is it’s not open source).
4: Aliens VS Predator Classic 2000.
5: Team Fortress 2/Monday Night Combat (PC version). TF2 used to be great and I would rank it a lot higher but all of the updates over the years has skewed the game so casual it’s pathetic. Imagine if Ono did an FPS and kept implementing comeback mechanics and you get an idea. Monday Night Combat I thought was way better but it lacked proper support (like a level editor and more maps) and the devs basically destroyed the balance of the game in the last update before announcing Super Monday Night Combat. I hope SMNC is better for sure.

i guess i’m the only one who likes CounterStrike 1.3 here.
map control doesn’t have to take the place of items/powerups. map control without items is relevant when you need to actually get from point A to point B.
map control of the items sort matters if all you’re playing is deathmatch. otherwise stuff like CS or Tribes has an objective which requires certain paths be used and made safe by other teammates. Beyond that, map control doesn’t make a game good. difficult choices due to multiple important objectives makes a game good.
IE: Do I stay back and defend my generator so my team can use better equipment (and thus gain an offensive and defensive advantage), do I defend the flag, do I attack their flag, do I attack their generator. What is the best loadout for attacking their flag? what about defending ours? Attacking their generator? All are different and all are equally important.
Specialists and Action Half-life were hilarious and awesome.
Also FPS do not have a short shelf life. Modern consumers and the prevalence of consoles/gamestop has made every genre have a short shelf life.
All the good games are covered: Q3, Unreal tourney, tribes, counterstrike… the only thing I’d add would be Serious Sam Co-Op… That shit was fun… seriously.
I know a lot people don’t like it, but I absolutely loved Hexen when I was a kid, I just loved the dark atmosphere and how it scared the hell out of me when I played it at night lol.
I’ve been playing Quake live for the past 30mins and its just too fun. I think we should all join a free for all room.
