For pad players: Your gamepad of choice

All my tournaments ive been to i used a pad and got made fun of. That being said…

I got a basic ps2 pad. I duct tape it and call it modded to be stupid. But i love it and no other pad comes close to it

Even if I wanted to, I can never bring myself to make fun of pad players. I have two 3S sparring partner who can absolutely rock me with a PS2 DualShock 2. It’s really damn scary since they’re doing Kara-cancels, 360s, and one of them can actually do a Keeper-Jin for a few seconds. :wasted:

The PS2 has a horrible D-pad and is only considered great because everyone’s gotten used to it to the point where anything else wont feel right.

At least that’s what I think. We need some proper experiments with pad virgins to see which pad feels more natural to the thumb movements.

Personally, having my thumb rub over a hard plastic edges trying to press down a some spungy buttons doesn’t make for a nice buttery dpad experience. I’d sooner cut my thumb off.

Saturn pad is a much nicer experience, with the neo cd pad maybe being a bit better.

I agree with you on that. I think the DS’s are all WAY overrated. I still think it was a SNES wannabe pad.

But then again, I dont care for the Saturn pad either. The only reason it was cool because it was the closest to a layout on a SF cab.

There were plenty of other controllers with 6 buttons at the time. Where are they now? 6 buttons are important but I don’t think it’s fair to put that as the reason for its popularity. However, I never cared for 6 buttons as I mainly use the saturn pad for shmups and neo geo fighters, so maybe your point is lost on my part.

anyone like the sega master system controller?

its gona be kinda gay for us pad players when sf4 is out. bc ultras is 3 buttons. gona either have to map 3k and 3p or add another (if possible) lk and lp on the shoulder buttons. im tryin to convert to stick but its not going so well lol

I already play 3S GGPO on my Saturn pad with L being 3P and R being 3K. I’ll do the same for SFIV with the Madcatz controller. The only difference is that I won’t be able to EX-Shoryuken with Akuma (no big deal). I’ve trained myself quite nicely to use 8 buttons for SF.

y not? its easy to press mp hp with one thumb.

Doing Akuma’s SAV (Super Art 5, his lightning super) in 3S or any 3P move in ST is a real pain in the ass on the Saturn pad. Getting your thumb to press all 3 top buttons requires you to basically move your entire right hand in order to get your thumb aligned comfortably enough to reach all 3. You’re right though, EX Moves are still rather simple to perform on a Saturn pad.

Just out of curiosity, for the people who use macros, what do you set your excess buttons to be? For me:

Street Fighter (ST/3S):
Saturn Pad:
-R = 3K/3P
-L = 3P/LP+LK (Kara-throwing )

DualShock 1:
-L1 = 3P/LP+LK
-L2 = 3K/3P

Guilty Gear:
-B = Not used
-R = P+K+S
-L = Taunt

DualShock 1:
-R2 = P+K+S
-L1 = Taunt
-L2 = Not used

I use a Dualshock 1. The ps1’s dpad is much more easier to precisely pull off input commands with over the ps2. Maybe it’s just my ps2 pad, but the dpad seems far too shallow to figure out which direction exactly I’m hitting, making dragon punches and super a thing of luck rather than skill.

Best pads ever made for any console were the grey CVS2 pads for the dreamcast.
What is wierd is the same pad for the PS2 are horrible.

Saturns are good but nothing is as well crafted as those ascii pads for the dreamcast.

What’s the difference between those pads on PS2/DC Ministry?
I was way too late to get one, and never found a DC version (for a reasonable price) … but lucked out with a $5 PS2 one…
I would say it’s a great pad, except the dpad occasionally makes a cracking noise.

Its crazy there supposed to be the same product, but there not even close.I own both of them as well.

It is hard to explain if you have never played with the two different pads, but the PS2 version seems to have a spongy D pad and buttons feel sticky. Whole pad just feels of a lower quality plastic.
Dpad on PS2 feels rough/soft versus the Dpad on the DC which feels Slick/hard.

The Dreamcast version is made of a different plastic. The dpad has a hard plastic and is not as high off the frame as the ps2 version. The buttons are more springy, and are also a higher quality plastic.

Dreamcast version’s frame is also of that higher quality plastic. It just feels like a more solid controller.

They can take a beating, had my set since they came out,and there still going strong for cvs2.

Man, I need to get a converter or switch to a arcade stick. I’ve been trying to play SSF2HDR w/ the dual shock 3 and the dpad blows. Never had any problems w/ the dual shock 2 or even the nubytech. Anyone got experience with the USB Saturn Controller on the PS3? I’d use my PS2 except I gave my U.S. version away to my nephew.

any of you guys see pad players at tournaments? i’ve never been to one. im curious to know if there are serious players that prefer pads over sticks

stnwag0n, I definitely know a few people who are serious on a pad. Sure, it’s only a bunch of local tourneys, but damn if they aren’t serious when playing on a pad. As I said a page back, a lot of my pals who still use pads can do things like Kara-cancels in 3S or FRCs in GGXXAC, which is pretty high level stuff. And they use shortcut mappings if you’re curious. Some stuff really just can’t be done on a pad without a bit of help…

And Inspirit, the USB Saturn pads as I said a few pages back, are the real deal. However, it’s been said a lot in the Official Saturn Controller Thread that there’s no way to get the USB Saturn pads to work with PS2 games via a backwards compatible PS3 since the pads don’t have a PS Button and you can only use them with PS3, PSN, and PS1 games.

I hear people get the saturn usb to work by plugging in a ps3 pad on the next slot over which gives you a Home button. Not sure if that works or not because I have never tried it.

I’ve heard that too, but most of the people over at the Ofificial Sega Saturn Pad thread seem to have tried it and failed.

Agreed about the PS2 ASCII FT2. That was an overpriced piece of crap. Fortunately I returned it and got a refund.

It’s the same situation with the Nubytech Street Fighter Anniversary Collection controllers. The PS2 version was good but the Xbox version was pure garbage.

I might not know a thing about the ASCII FT and FT2, but I do know about the SF 15th Anniversary pads and you’re definitely right; the PS2 ones had much better quality overall. The D-pads on the PS2 VS the ones on the Xbox one are totally different. Almost night and day.
