Can I give some tips vs. C.Viper that you’re not using James?
(taking the liberty :P)
1 :: after C.Viper does c.mk XX knucle on block, you can throw out c.lp OS EX-Hand to stop any follow up except for EX-Seismo.
Its not in range for beeing blocked, or to hit. But if the Viper moves forward, or presses any buttons. She will eat c.lp XX exhand.
2 :: c.mk XX knuckle is not a true blockstring, you can Lariat it on prediction. pretty safe if viper has no meter.
3 :: Short lariat on reaction to flash every now and then, gives you the possibility to walk forward and not beeing hit by the seismo.
worth noting that if you abuse this, she can ofc punish it with a seismo timed at the end of the short lariat.
Thanks for the tips. I’m going to make a list on my phone of all the tips in matchups I always forget to do and read it before each match!
Sounds like a good IDEA. I remember playing vs. A guy in a grudgematch, and it took me some time remembering the matchup because it was so Rare. I think il make a list per char myself. Read it before everymatch Good idea WGE!
Idea: What if, instead of doing personal lists, we update the flowchart thread with ideas thrown out by everyone? I’m sure we could all benefit from it and it would be a good way to try and bring some life into this forum.

2:10:00 - 2:17:40 Flocker (Cammy) vs Me II (Free)
My matches from yesterday. Any help or commentary is appreciated and I can answer any questions here. Finally manned up and started utilizing Ultra 2 in events. Although I played badly, Ray$ commentary makes me seem godlike. Regardless, I dodged some people in the brackets (http://challonge.com/triplethreat2ae) to get 3rd place. Lilman always shittalks my play on stream lol
Gief forum help me out or take something from this. Also, keep in mind I made plenty of errors early in the tournament just do to jitters and an overall lack of practice.
I’ll check them out and edit this post with whatever I find and try to steal tech if possible ;).
Edit: woah, first piece of advice, someone needs to get that guy from the first match off the mic, not cool.
Oh boy, I hadn’t seen that whiffed body splash into suplex ever, I’m stealing that. Nice Ultra 2 on Cammy in your first match vs Flocker.
The one issue I notice is that once you’re knocked down you always go for EX GH or ultra, block more (or crouch lariat more, can trade with those pesky divekicks) bro, they’ll go away unless they disrespect you and go for a grab or something, in which case you should be able to SPD them back. I have the same issue, also trying my best to get it off me.
Thx for the matches bitbna. I’m no expert by any means but imo all your wins were against players that were pretty average at best, especially that first player who was just a scrub. They were letting you get away with really bad mistakes like random gh’s, running bear grabs, etc. Either their punishes were horrible or they didn’t punish at all. Also you really gotta get those bnb’s down instead of that splash-cr.lk-lariat nonsense. I think you missed every single combo into ex.gh. Good shit on getting third though.
Yeah, most of the random greenhands (non-EX ones anyway) were me just trying to chip them out, or me being retarded and trying to cancel a fireball on prediction. RBG is pretty much always a mistake lol. As for the combos, believe me I am telling myself this every day too. I really need to sit down and practice them more instead of play Marvel. I feel pretty confident with st. mp - st. lk xx EXGH, so maybe I will just grind that out for max damage.
Blocking more is definitely something I need to work on on wakeup (too much marvel). I will definitely workout some of my options as I wakeup vs Cammy, but Flocker specifically obviously has my number when it comes to footsies, so I have long way to go to beat him.
Ryu vs Zangief:
- Learn FA absorb forward dash, instinctively to fireballs. You need to use FA absorb forward dash SPD.
- Your EXGH FADC needs work. You can cancel late a bit after the second hit to confirm a block. Could be due to lag?
- You relied heavily on jumping as an approach
- Ryu failed to anti-air with far HK, and didn’t make use of lp and lk feints, to make you jump in. Also missed the big Ultra finish.
Sagat vs Zangief:
- From far away also use KKK and FA absorb forward dash to approach. They are still viable at closer ranges such as Sagat’s stand HK range. Notice how he never used an EX Tiger shot? He didn’t have too!!
- If you ever land a late jumping HP, use cr.hk for the knock down - instead of cr.lk xx EXGH.
- Often if your jumping HP is blocked, mix up between an extended LP SPD, far st.mp or cr.lk chain. Don’t use far MK if you can avoid it. Use far MP.
- When you had Sagat cornered, use more far st.mp. When its blocked, mix up between doing nothing, far st.lk, or extended LP SPD.
- Need to space your regular gh if using them as an approach. LPGH to get you to max LP SPD range and no closer. If your trying to banish up close, your gambling, and you also picked the wrong Ultra for the pay off.
- I think the o/s poke of choice is far st.lp xx EXGH at outside Sagat’s HK range, and o/s cr.lp xx EXGH just inside Sagat’s HK range.
- Have to captialize on landed EXGH more, whether comboed or random. That’s the nature of Zangief. Use your offensive options, far st.mp, far hk, cr.hk, LP SPD when he doesn’t have 2 bars. And use your more defensive options, block, back dash, EXGH, when he does.
- The problem with Ultra 2 is, that you have to show your willing to pull the trigger and land it on descending. I don’t think the opponent was respecting it, and mostly Tiger Uppercutting. This is easier said than done. I think your would be better off with Ultra 1 in this match-up. Maybe the only way to land it, is when you cr.mk into SPD a few times on a cornered Sagat.
- A few execution errors. Didn’t walk a bit and use an extended SPD off the tick, and whiffed instead.
- Didn’t punish blocked HP Tiger Uppercut with U2 on block, quite easy, spin the leaver like crazy and activate once off the ground. To be fair, he could have gone for LP Tiger Uppercut. But its the risk you take to land the Ultra. Else, should have punish with Atomic Suplex. Instead of normal throw? Maybe you were nervous.
Akuma vs Zangief:
- Frequent use and abuse of PPP. Neutral jump more instead of blocking, use FA absorb also
- Poor jump in combo selection. Never use far MK, especially when you were close enough to use stand MP or cr.LP or cr.lk. On block you are at negative frames, reducing your following LP SPD / Block / another st.MP mix-up.
- Vary your jump in, occasionally empty jump outside akuma’s range, or drop early with the knee drop. Every jump in was far jumping HP.
- Most of your damage was lost due to demon flip kick combo’s, gotta block them properly. Loop the setup in training mode constantly till you got it down.
- I find in this match-up back teleport is a frequent answer, so I HAVE to guess gh at times. Although with akuma’s U2 that’s a problem.
- Second match, seemed like you improved with more neutral jumping.
General points:
- Need to be more patient, and take your time to do things right.
- Learn FA absorb forward dash and use neutral jump more often.
- Learn to use extended LP SPD off whiffed far st.lk and far st.mp
- Stop using Jumping HP, far MK as a combo.
- Avoid random EXGH. Reaction EXGH where you mash D,F,D,F,D,F,D,F,D,F and PP on fireball is better.
Don’t sweat. You did better than me!!! I think every Zangief plays better than me. Thanks for contributing your vids.
Ryu tips:
- Zangief forward dash is HELLA slow, could you show me a video of other Gief’s doing it? I have no problem doing it as say Cammy, but Gief is just so slow : /
- You right.
- Yeah, I jump in a lot overall in tournaments if people don’t establish their anti air on me. I know I did it a lot in game 1 vs. Ryu especially because I start the round with no meter.
Sagat v Gief:
- That’s a great point you have in forcing Sagat to use his meter so he doesn’t have it when I corner him, but I’m wary of focusing too much in tournaments. I’ll definitely work on this
- Overall, I need to work on my confirms from different ranges off of jump ins. Earlier in the event I was going for the sweep, and always missing by a little bit so I wasn’t confident and just went with what I knew got me damage and a mixup.
- You’re right.
- I don’t like using lpgh as a tool to approach (funny because I used it too often imo in the event). I also firmly believe that Ultra 2 is the best ultra for the Sagat matchup. I don’t really plan on winning matches off of lp gh whiff to ultra 1.
- Again, you’re right, but I EXGH get’s me closer to the corner, where I win for free. I’d rather not take the risk of losing so much space for some damage if I don’t have to.
- I disagree, I believe ultra 2 is the best ultra for this matchup and in general.
- You’re right my execution sucks lol
- Yeah I was just nervous and I should have punished better for sure. I remember thinking at the time, “Really throw? lol i’m the best.”
Akuma v Gief:
- You really think so? Unless he did something like jump back fireball, I’m pretty sure Akuma’s insane walkspeed let’s him punish you for using PPP Lariat from all but fullscreen.
- That’s a good point, I will go to training mode and test some with jump in’s from certain ranges.
- You are right about varying my jump ins definitely, I should work empty jump and knees into my play more.
- I’m just going to go and grind out knees os. GH instead of guessing.
General:
- Ofc more patience always necessary.
- I guess I am turned off of FA overal, but I will work on it. As for neutral jump, I really should, but again, If I’m not sure of myself I’d rather just block it.
- Yeah, really should just go for space at that point.
- I don’t know how many random EXGH’s I did, but yeah, overall I need to avoid that. I felt I did well with reacting to fireballs with EXGH though, I don’t think Ryu baited me too much, and I know Akuma didn’t
I watch a few japanese matches, where they FA and usually back dash. There’s two ways to use it. ONE, predictive. Where you charge the FA in anticipation to a projectile, and dash forward after absorbing. If the projectile doesn’t come, back dash out, before it goes to Level 3. Other use is, on reaction, just as the projectile is about to hit you, FA and forward dash, into either block - if you don’t have enough frame advantage; or into SPD - if you are at frame advantage. This is a way to close distance at the risk of grey health, because as you know, blocking projectiles loses you chip health, but MOST importantly, you lose ground from push back. This technique is better suited to a more patient playing style, because after a few absorbs, you have to wait it out.
Zangief’s dash is slow, so you only can use it as an approach or within dash + LP SPD - which is quite far. This is probably a range, where they can throw projectiles while also enticing you to jump. With the FA absorb, you need to watch out for EX projectiles and forward moving Ultras, especially Ultra projectiles - Tiger Cannon, Denjin Hadouken, Metsu Hadouken, because they can eat your FA for free.
“Frequent use and abuse of PPP” - I was actually referring to what you did. So statement should be “shouldn’t abuse PPP” I almost never use PPP except when its anti-air cr.PPP. Come to think of it, PPP, almost has no real legitimate use (except avoid chip on wake up, beating out random Ultra). From far away, I have time to dodge projectiles with KKK or neutral jump or FA. And if up close, reaction jump, FA dash, EXGH. Akuma can instantly nail your PPP lag any time with a full screen EX Demon Flip, on top of his walk speed.
FA backdash is fine if you need ultra. FA forward dash, I guess I just need to experiment to find out when I should use it in whatever matchup.
As for abusing PPP Lariat, I’m pretty sure I was only doing it that round to build meter for the next round.
FA forward dash is only to close the gap, strictly for projectiles, dhalsim’s limbs, other slower pokes. Example use, check out Vangief, Zangitan, possibly others. It’s a classic SPD set-up against fireballs.

I have no idea if this was known or not, or if it has already been posted. I don’t really play Zangief, but I might as well post this video where it might be appreciated.
