Final Round (march 2-4) will be the first tournament I go to.

I just wanted to know from people who have gone to tournaments, how are thefts and the like handled there?

Is it imperative to customize your stick, less someone takes it?

How is the security of the hotels and the hotels around it?

How are the neighborhoods (usually) around the venue?

Are most of the locals okay with us being there for a weekend, or are they the type to shun?

just don’t leave it laying around when you aren’t playing. bring a backpack. you’ll be fine. nobody is gonna break into a hotel room to steal a video game controller.

If you’re that concerned just don’t even bring your stick. I got mine stolen at some NCR a while back (mainly due to drunken negligence) and now I just don’t bring anything and mooch off others. It’s rare to not be able to find at least one person who will allow you to borrow their stick (has yet to happen to me), and since everyone uses the exact same stick these days you should have no problem adjusting.

Generally, people are pretty cool about sticks left around. That being said, if you leave $100+ in electronics just sitting around, and it gets stolen, you kind of deserve it.
Say you want to go get food, take your shit back to your room/car/whatever. Need 10 minutes to go to the bathroom, leave your shit with someone you know. There’s nothing stopping you from just laying your stick on a table and walking away, and chances are, nothing bad is going to happen, but you would be stupid to do so when there are so many better alternatives.

As for your point of customizing your stick so its easily identifiable. If someone wants to steal something, they’ll steal it. Though this does greatly reduce the risk of taking your stick by accident (this is especially important if you’ve got some mods under the hood, but the exterior looks otherwise stock). That being said, I don’t know of anyone that would modify a stick to keep it from being stolen (though before I did my art mod, there was a scuff on the balltop, thanks MadCatz, that made it very easy to tell if a stick was mine), most people do it to make it look nice simple and plain.

Common sense, use it.

I always carried a backpack with me when I went to tournaments and such, and always had it on me.

Bring a backpack with you, keep it in there when you aren’t playing a match.

If you’re really that worried about it, if someone asks you to borrow your stick for their match in pools or something, say no. I’m sure someone else will let them, anyways.
