I would say, watch a lot of games and try to broaden your criteria. For example, footsie-oriented games may not look fast, so, because of that, these games would probably be ignored, but if you happen to identify the fun potential that a game might have to offer, you can then decide better if said fun potential overlaps well enough with your preferences.
An other example would be, “King of Fighters doesn’t play like SF, and vice-versa, so I’ll skip it”, when it’s possible to enjoy both series and develop a KoF “mindset” and a SF one (rather than trying to play KoF like you would when playing a SF game, and vice-versa).
