Fighting Game With The Biggest Impact

Umm Samurai Shodown. First great weapons-based fighter that all others of its kind take after, most notably Soul Calibur.

oh, guess i should’ve read a little closer heh heh

…of course they do…just not here in the U.S.

Virtua Fighter for bringing fighting games to the 3rd dimension.

thats a good question to answer obviously street fighter 2 gets honorable mention but id have to say mortal kombat as well. i mean yeah the violence and all is good but i cant seem to remember correct but didnt street fighter not put blood into the mix until after mortal kombat? someone correct me if im wrong. but as for 3d im not an avid player but i had fun with the vf series even the 2d ones had me going with the otg combos and the controlling of space through ring outs etc.

3D KOF gave the MAXIMUM impact.

uhh…mk but it fell off as a fighting game. it intensified violence in video games

street fighter remains the best imo

SFII and Virtua Fighter get my vote.

SF2:WW is obviously the undisputed king just for singlehandedly starting the genre of 2D fighters. (yes it drew from yie-air kung fu and karate champion but those games sucked balls)

A distant second would be GG (especially GGAC) because it introduced 3478923948122145 new innovative gameplay mechanics all of which have some relevant use in even the highest level of play. GG singlehandedly revolutionized 2D fighters it was a very new and refreshing take on the genre in both the level of polish in the art/background and the heavy emphasis on offense, yes an argument can be made for KOF but no game PUNISHES u so much for NOT being aggressive like GG.

Third would be a tie between 3S or marvel 3S introduced a polished parry system of which the entire game is based off never has that been done before or at least never have parries been so well implemented. Marvel gave us a game that is 100% dependent on execution n setups no other game rewards these 2 skills as much as marvel.

Fourth would prolly be MK simply due to the controversy of it’s violence/blood content n making countless ppl dump insane numbers of quarters into their local arcade hell i remember growing up in queens my laundromat has an MK cab:rofl:

Well, If we’re talking video games that had the most impact on cosplay, you’d be right.
But in terms of actual popularity/quality, no. I still like 98 though I love Slide’s quote on it…

“This game is shit yet I feel strangely compelled to continue” (I think this was after Kaillera ate a V-slasher)

The vs series added some of the fastest and most frantic gameplay for a 2D fighter using the best of the best from the Capcom and Marvel universe. It opened up a lot of new people to the idea of playing fighters.

SF3 took sprite animation to a whole new level, still has yet to be beat 10 years later.

The obvious two are SF2 for making 2D fighters popular, and VF for building the foundation for all the successful 3D fighters.

Thats why combovideomakers win all the tournaments, right? Not trying to be a dick, but come on.

Street Fighter 2 - The game that started a revolution in games, period. If it wasn’t for this, we may not have a SRK to discuss this anyway. :dp: and :qcf: made famous right here. What game can say they made motions a household name.

Mortal Kombat - Took the revolution and upped the ante. And changed the way all games are viewed. One of the reasons we have an ESRB. Can you say fatality.

Virtua Fighter - That 3D Fighting thing, they did it first. Seeing as VF is like that ugly girl you used to know back in the day who is fine as hell now. Some of the best fludity and controls inside and out. Still one of the best today.

Samurai Shodown - You want weapons. Then SS has got you in spades. The first in 2D to do it and the one of the best fighting series, period. And what other game has characters named after drugs.

King of Fighters - Fighting games would’ve sooner or later got to team bouts, but SNK did it first. And did it best…for a while. But XII is on the way, and trust that will make an impact too.

Tekken - Made 3D Fighters more accesible to the masses. Controls and otherwise. And that has to count for something. And no fighting game has a more convoluted but interesting storyline like this one. KoF used to have that award in the bag until Kazuya became the Devil. It’s been a crazy bus ride since then. And T6 could be that standout game for the series. It’s a toss-up about what game in particular that is right now, but overall Tekken is a great series that has done its part for fighting games.

The VS Series - Made all your dreams come true. Where else can you get Cyke/Ryu vs. Mags/Dictator. And MvC2 is still hype and it came out in 2000. And people want 3 like cooked crack. And it let 2 rivals come together and make something truly beautiful. Capcom vs SNK. The name alone is impact in its self.

Soul Edge/Calibur - THE 3D Weapon Fighter, the 8 way run, I could go on and on but I won’t. The Soul series is one of the most revolutionary series in all of GAMES. And it’s showing no signs of slowing down with 4 on the horizon.

Street Fighter 3 - Parries, yeah. New Characters, yeah. One of the greatest game soundtrack libraries in history, yeah. But if it showed nothing else, it showed Capcom could count to 3. And that is impact.

Guilty Gear - It was the new revolution and rebirth 2D fighters. Fast, furious, and in your face. And that rock music is so kick ass.

Super Smash Bros. Series - I’ll say this. Power Stone did it early. But Smash brought the copy cats in. It’s the pinnacle of party fighters. And what game has more hype than this other than 4. And what other game on the market has Nintendo characters acting like they have no home training. And this game has brought the world to its knees more than once. And for that I have to show respect for what this game has brought to gaming,

Honorable Mentions

Dead or Alive - You brought me Hitomi and boobs. And I can spam the reversal button like no tommorow. But you are a great fighter with depth and have revolutionized fighting games in your own special way. And for that I’ll give you the shine you deserve.

Doujin Fighters - Thank you for showing people that Fighting Games aren’t dead, they just took a couple shots. And for that I’ll give the respect that is due. Because these are the games that impact Fighting Games now and will in the years to come.

I am gonna go with either Yi-Ar Kung Fu, Karate Champ, or Pit Fighter.

Lol

Man, I remember tiering the first MI in a few hours. Alba was nuts in that game. I won’t lie, the game was fun for a few weeks.

SF2, then MK, then MVC, then Soul Calibur.

Did i say anything about combo vid makers? In marvel whoever is more adept at catching the other in a setup for an infinite it most likely going to win please think before you post:rolleyes:

In my last post i forgot to mention smash bros thats definitely somewhere near the very top for obvious reasons.

SF II of course if we are talking about the game that started all the shit…but as this is not the case, ill have to say that GG made a great impact in 2D fighting games, it introduced us many many tactics we could use in battle, no more words are needed, GG IS the shit. Ill always respect SFII and SFIII, specially the third part for giving us a weapon against chipping and fireball whoring (Parry) and another game that gave us that weapon thou in a different way (Just Defense) was Garou: MOTW, God I love that game, so good and also very fun to play.

I enjoy playing KoF XI too, is a very good game, with many things to use (thou not as much as GG) and can be very strategic due to all that Quick shift and saving shift stuff that requieres Skill Stocks, very very nice idea.
I dont like 3D fighters that much, but im sure that Tekken and VF are the best so far.

Shaq-Fu; the world’s greatest fighting game, the only thing that comes close is 3D BALLZ

Im the only here who thinks that Killer Instinct was an impact? i mean, i know that the game is far to be the greatest combo system in a game ever, but in those years it was like “ZOMG i never believe that someone can bring these graphics and music on Arcade games”, it was commented in almost all magazines in those years, it was the game who “hype” the launch of Nintendo 64 and it was one of the most successful SNES games ever.
