FGs: Best and Worst years

LOL, this is bullshit. you have no idea how much some people hated CVS2. Now people champion CVS2, but people use to hate it a lot. CVS2 was the most hated game for a long time. And there were of course people who hated MVC2 and 3s. In general CVS2 player usually hated 3s. 3s players usually hated Marvel. Marvel players usually hated anything that wasn’t Marvel. Every community had it’s distinct top players, and there were very few people who played all 3 of them.

Can't see how people hate SFIV and MVC3, yet they continue to buy it. I mean why buy a game you hate. Local mid week MVC3 and SSFIV tournaments pull in 30 entrants. I remember went to a console tournament back in 2007 before SFIV was released. That tournament was barely getting 24 people on the bracket. Hell a 24-25 man bracket for a local tournament was considered good. Now those are low numbers. SFIV local tournaments are pulling at least 35 entrants and up.

If people bitch about MVC3 and SSFIV is because more people are playing them competitively. People complain about balance issues, and silly tactics they can lose to. Bitching about the game you compete in is common. Kind of like MVC2 competitive players had plenty to complain about, as did CVS2 players. If you were a CVS2 player and never felt you had to complain, it is because you’re not playing anyone good, or you’re the one using the stupid stuff (and never having it done to you).

FG fans have such short memories. Yeah everyone just loved CVS2, when in reality it was the first old game to get dropped from Evo. I mean all of the years I defended CVS2 against tons of criticism on SRK and gamefaqs wasn’t real, because people just loved that game back then. Sureeee

96 and 97 playing Alpha 2 in my local arcade.

2011 has been a damn good year so far and I still have Evo to go to, so may well end up being my favourite year for fighting games ever.

Branh, you weren’t alone. CVS2 was the first 2D fighter I played somewhat competitively (I was an arcade lurker back in the day–never competed, but loved challenging the top players in my area and learning how to play). As I said in the “Fighting Games Are Getting Worse” thread a while back, everybody bitches about every new game that comes out, but then that game eventually becomes exonerated by rose-tinted nostalgia. I guarantee that if we keep getting new fighters for the next 5 or 6 years, everyone will be looking back at how “great” SFIV and Marvel 3 were.

worst years were the sft2 days (turbo, rainbow, champion, koryu (which was actually fun, and i still have it))

You weren’t even alive during that time, little boy. You’re 15.

Branh, can you stop posting like you’re actually good in MvC2?? Hold that up back with Cable for dear life, son. GATDAYMMMMMM

That’ll at least partially be due to FGs coming out in 5 or 6 years being far, far worse than the shit we’ve got now.

The people that defend CvS2 today are the same people that liked it in the past. Just because they bashed it then doesn’t mean anything for today. They might have said something because they liked MvC2 or 3S better, but that doesn’t mean they hated it. I bashed it to. But in comparison to SFIV? Let me just say, I bashed CvS2, but I still played it when people wanted to play. IV comes around, and I don’t even want to try playing it. It’s just a bad game. The people today that will like it are the people that will defend it tomorrow. It’s not like people suddenly came out of nowhere that once hated CvS2, now defend it. We didn’t like a certain game back then… We absolutely hate this new shit coming out. Marvel 3 made me hate Capcom, for hyping me up for some new haagen daas bananas mango pringles… and what do I get? Bullshit.

On this thread, all you fuckers who are little kids, and I mean 20 and younger, shut the fuck up please. You weren’t even at an age where you can get your dick up when the “defended” games were around. You don’t know what it means to “prefer one to another” versus blatantly dislike something.

It’s the same story with nearly all competitive gaming communities nowadays. They bitch and complain about the current product until the next instalment is released. Suddenly they’re blinded by nostalgia goggles and “remember how perfect the old days were” whilst averting all their hatred to the sequel.

How do you propose to make a good fighter with no techniques that take careful timing gained through practice? Combos aren’t the only advantage people who have time to practice can do. Plus, researching/labbing matchups can take time. Time is always an advantage.

I’m going to take a different approach and say that as far as skill and knowledge goes for the games, the best years were definitely from 04-06

some jaded ass people in this thread…

Someone has never heard of trolls/trolling

I may be relatively new to this community (I’m an '09er), but until SF4, I have not heard of anybody playing games that they really do not like just because they’re popular.

I have heard countless complaints from top players about the games that they play.

To me, the best fighting game years are pretty much the current years, aka the years after SF4 came out. I’m not the biggest fan of SF4 and it’s incarnations, but I can’t deny how it’s made the community grow. I suppose a lot of folks can argue how the growth that SF4 gave is actually negative growth, but…eh, I’ve actually got a lot more people to play against now in the fighters that I enjoy. Back when I went to the arcade(before it closed) in my early teens, the only “scenes” that developed were for Soul Calibur 2 and Tekken 5, but those scenes were fairly small and eventually petered out.

When SF4 came around, the people from those scenes got back together and a whole lot more new people joined in for SF4. I may not enjoy it that much, but I respect the people in my community that love it enough to get really good at it. Eventually, scenes were made for Marvel 3 and MK, and hopefully more develop for more upcoming fighters. So, I’m currently happy with how things are shaping up in the fighting game scene, even if it’s a very Capcom-dominated scene. However, that’s just me.

i cant see how cvs2 could be hated tbh

it had KOF characters in it?*

*not my reasoning, trying to imagine a reason

There are 4 reasons people hate a game:

  1. they don’t like or were never good at the game’s mechanics. (i.e., roll canceling, parries, etc.)
  2. it’s a bad game
  3. everyone else said the game is bad.
  4. The game is bad because it’s not _____ (game that I like.)

In this case it’s #1 and #4. You can see how something like jwong and steve h’s hour long turtle fest in GF @ C3 would be fuel to the fire for #4’s who like total-nonstop-on-screen-action.
