FGD Lounge: for general fighting game discussions that aren't thread worthy

Everything is anime.

Dont know why but SF2T Grand Master Challenge on both arcade and Dreamcast is a lot harder. Easy difficulty there even surpasses Very Hard mode of USF4. If you mess with dipswitches and add English translation it gets even worse! Characters in GMX do also scripted combos, thanks to the help and input of tournament players. I wish USF4 AI difficulty was as sophisticated. But no, it is about those silly trials and FADC…

Pac Man, Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, Bubble Bobble, New Zealadn Story, Wonderboy…list goes on

Marvel is especially anime.

So are we calling anything from Japan anime or animation in general is anime? If it’s the later we’ll all have to agree to disagree. And when I said “anime” I mean mostly how the game plays. ( emphasis on offense and air mobility I.E airdashing, chain combos with long combo strings etc)

Japan calls anything that’s animated, “anime”.

This topic in general has been debated for quite a good bunch of times in fighting game forums and it never really goes anywhere beyond “animation is anime” and “categorising games is for insecure people.”

Now, here’s some food for thought for ya: what would you call Advanced V.G. 2? Aside from having (older-looking) waifu characters with manga-style aesthetics, it has medium-sized combos (it was only released in 1998) with chains and juggles, but it has no airdash, no burst, no air tech, no instant block/faultless defense type of mechanics and the only kind of “air mobility” is a super jump that covers half a screen (when the stage is zoomed out). Actually, the game plays more like Alpha 2/RB2 than Guilty Gear.

I think the issue is people wanting to shoe horn games into categories as labeled by glittering generalities that have no substantial, clear, and accurate definitions nor standards in which the community could objectively use.

Just discuss and analyze each game within its own context. But people don’t like doing that and like perpetuating “le epic memes” “setplay” and other dumb shit.

vast majority of fighting game players suck at every game they touch. they are also generally pretty dumb. joining the facebook group for 3rd Strike players has only cemented my belief that this is true. I think it’s generally safe to ignore what 95% of the community says because they are all pants-on-head retarded.

@Igloobob I think it’s because the most vocal are the casual players who never visit tournaments or local scenes and play exclusively on-line and only play one MAYBE two fighters. From my experiences those who are more active in the FGC tend to have more appreciation for a variety of fighters and don’t engage in that fanboy non sense “hurr hurr BB and GG are for weaboos” “Smash isn’t a real fighter” “DOA is just about boobs” “Everyone needs to stop dick riding SF, all you do is spam in that game herp derp” I’d say fuck what most are talking about on-line and listen to those who are actually active in the community.

I got banned fro ma group on fb cause I said mugen was a waste of time and someone should play real fighting games. then someone said when mugen is done right its on the level of cvs2 and other top fighting games…that kinda set me off. But its not like I went after people individually but they got really hurt that I didnt like a game. Ive had people tell me to kill myself repeatedly online so maybe these people arent used to how harsh/mean the internet is. Theres WAY WAY bigger issues out there and I didnt think much about saying that Mugen wasnt good.

Maybe I went off on Mugen because of people being mean to me in person at an arcade because I was new and so I want to try and be as good as I can be so that makes me not like inferior games. At least I dont go after people. Maybe playing in an arcade just makes you have a different mindset about these games than other people.

@OrochiDemon Mugen should be used as a place to learn the basics and practice and try ideas for those who want to make a fighting game. A mugen should never try to be made into a legit competitive fighter or taken as seriously as one.

Why not?

Well I don’t know a whole lot about Mugen. But from what I’ve looked up Mugen is a downloadable fighting game engine where one can make their own fighter using either already made or original characters. From what I’ve seen Mugen is good for an aspiring fighting game dev to practice with but it just doesn’t seem like a viable well crafted competitive fighter can be made with it. Imagine Capcom, Namco or ArcSys forgoing their engines and what not and saying “lets just use mugen, that’s good enough”

One of the main issues with MUGEN is that mechanics are implemented on a per character level. It’s hard to just implement them let alone tweak and balance them out for the entire cast.

Well, mostly. You can still dabble in a system file called common1.cns to work on universal mechanics. That’s why characters from Mugen fullgames won’t work in a generic Mugen compilation. They need the mechanics written in that file in order to work properly.

Honestly, call me crazy but I think it’s hypothetically possible to create a decent fighting game with Mugen because it’s so freeform (they are some decent non-broken, while not arcade-perfect, characters to play but they are few and far between - and characters from those shady Brazilians websites aren’t good examples, they don’t know how to code for shit.) But the facts that it’s so freeform and that most Mugen creators don’t have a clue about properly creating a fighting game are probably the reasons why we never got one.

So have any of you guys checked out that Apex2015 article about females in the smash community accusing the former CEO of Apex of harrassment which caused him to decide to step down? Is he guilty or not? Because he didn’t defend himself, he just immediately walked away once the aligations were made. They claimed he hit on underaged girls and outed transgenders among other things.

From what I’ve seen and heard the sheer number of people who have said something, from the victims, to other people in the organization who told him to make some changes and get his shit together, makes it very, very hard for me to believe this is false. He was a creep, plain and simple.

People also do the whole “arms race thing” where they try to make the absolute strongest characters. It’s funny stuff

I hate when people make characters with “Superman Syndrome” Just absurdly OP characters without context. Just OP for no reason other than so they can say “my character would kick *insert well known character here” ass. Just because a character can destroy a planet by looking at it funny or defeat SSJ4 Goku with a dick slap doesn’t make them a good character. People need to understand this.

Yeah mugens a joke honestly. Theres no reason to invest time in a mugen game when you can just play actual fighting games.

Like I was saying before though I think it’s good for those who want to learn the basics for developing a fighting game.
