FGD Lounge: for general fighting game discussions that aren't thread worthy

Characters in ST came in two versions: one with the new ST moves and mechanics (juggle, supers, throw softening) and one with the SSF2 movesets plus some normals that gained additional cancelable frames on normals. The latter is commonly called the “Old” version.

OK, I get what you’re saying, we call them the “original characters” in the UK. Who cares about the 3do? ST is pretty much SSF2 with Supers and Akuma, thats it. There’s no reason to leave out the original characters because they’re essentially ST characters with LESS moves.

Because certain “Old” versions of characters were better (e.g. O.Ken, O.Sagat). If you look at the ranking chart over at ST Revival, you can actually see certain “Old” characters preferred over their new counterparts.

Actual it does the exact opposite
there are no casuals left and there won’t be any new ones
which is why the game is not growing anymore

The game isn’t dead. It’s far from dead. Growth is just nonexistent. It’s to be expected though. Without constant updates, it is difficult for any game to survive in this gaming climate for very long. That being said, tier thread and stream thread still get good attention, and the subreddit has a good amount of activity. The wikis have been updated by dedicated players, and videos continue to be pumped out. New stuff is found still, and the game is fun for certain people. I still like the game a lot. I wish vergil and zero didn’t exist, but it is what it is. X-factor is not nearly as much of an issue as it used to be as players are getting increasingly better. In fact, it is needed for a touch of death train game. It’s fun, and there are a lot of good character designs. The game is actually pretty technical at this point in its life, and there’s a lot more thinking involved with respect to movement, blocking, and pushblock timing.

No, this is untrue. “Old” Ken and “New” Ken are completely different characters. N.Ken might as well get a new name. O.Hawk has his OS throw loop while N.Hawk doesn’t, O.Ryu has an air tatsu that’s unblockable 50% of the time while N.Ryu doesn’t, O.Honda and N.Honda don’t even have the same normals assigned for each button.

And even when both versions of a character share some moves, they’re not even the same frame-wise and hitbox-wise.

I meant graphically. “Old ken” is my ST character, I’m aware of that. We were hypothetically talking about ST being released for the Snes. The 3do version had no reason to leave out the original characters and the Snes version wouldn’t either. My point was there are no graphical constraints in having the og characters because you’re not adding new or extra frames of animation.

I think if Capcom wanted to and since they did port Alpha 2 to SNES then they would have ported ST to the snes if it could have been done.

Lol, You were the only person who didn’t think so earlier so why the sudden change…

No Harada, you need to make a fighting game based on all the FIGHTING MANGAS from the 80s to 2000s. Fuuuuuck all these weak ass character creations from these other companies, especially capcom. Ugh, unless i get rich soon, i’ll never see a proper 3d fighting game from harada based on japanese manga.

I know he knows about those manga franchises. Maybe its too much of a hassle to even get the rights to those mangas. I cannot imagine how a garouden vs grappler baki 3d game by harada wouldnt maul the arcade in popularity, and destroy console sales.

Fuck the household names. I’m telling you, that shit would be flames if they did it right, with some awesome grapple mechanics too.

Whatever

Uniel has a pretty good defensive game though. Most character’s normals are - frames and blocking and shielding builds so much GRD. That’s different from Melty where certain characters like C-Nanaya have crazy frame traps and ways to reset pressure. I feel like you block enough correctly and tech throws you’re pretty much golden and actually have the advantage. Also, you can’t die from chip.

I do like how Uniel rewards good defense with GRD and how just activating is a good defensive option because it gives you a super freeze to react to stuff.

Yeah, I feel like blocking in Uniel is pretty good. You should give the game another chance. Do like me, play Merkava and kidnap people.

Man I watched a bit of Arturo Sanchez’s stream last night and the chat was really shitty. Okay I get it, you personally consider X game to be the most deep/most skilled/most complex or whatever, but why diss other games and their communities? I heard everything from (paraphrases) “every SF game since ST was terrible and catered to casuals, especially SF4” to “why have 2 anime fighters at EVO, they’re all the same” to “how can Smash get 2 games at EVO instead of my game [even though both Melee and Smash 4 will be 2 of the biggest tournaments after USF4 and maybe UMvC3]” to “why have any 3D fighters at EVO, they all suck,” to “Smash isn’t a fighting game, it’s a party game! [even though you know, it’s 2 or more characters beating the shit outta each other on a 2D plane].” Oh, and one of the best, “accessibility in fighting games is baaadddd, makes the game automatically less skilled.”

I really don’t get it. Obviously all this was based on the EVO announcement, but those are games that have strong communities that show up for events. Melee was massive last year. At this upcoming Apex, both Melee and Smash 4 will be gigantic. I don’t personally enjoy Smash (except in a party setting), but I’m not going to tell the competitive Smash people “yo your game’s shit.” There have been plenty of fighting games I’ve loved and thought were great but could I get over 1K people at least coming out for an event for my game?

Kind of related to that, I don’t particularly enjoy 3D fighters but come on, they are all very different, and need representation at the biggest fighting game tournament in the world.

As for accessibility killing skill in fighting games… look, make a distinction between skill floor and skill ceiling. You want the skill ceiling to be as high as possible. You want people to be discovering new tech, new tools for matchups, new strats 5, 10, 15 years down the line after the game comes out. But you can still have that and make the game easy and fun to pick up and play. You can teach the absolute basics of ST to someone completely new to fighting games really quickly. Hell, I barely ever touched 3S before a couple weeks ago (SNK fan), but in about 4 hours with a couple of helpful guys I had figured out my basic strategy for my character, how to cancel into super, my good pokes, mindgames, etc. I still got bodied but at least I was playing the game more or less correctly. Don’t get me wrong, you can have a game be really hard to break into. I consider Marvel to be impenetrable. But that doesn’t mean games easy to break into are bad.

I mean, isn’t that largely why SF has the biggest fighting game community in the world? (also by SF2 being the first big fighting game). SF2, SF3 and SF4 are all fairly easy to pick up and play at a beginner level, and learn fundamentals, compared to, say, GG, where you could ages just trying to learn how to execute the most simple stuff.

TL;DR: Don’t diss other people’s games, even if you consider them casual, or if their game has a bigger playerbase than yours! Also UNIEL looks awesome and I want more people to play it so some day we can see it at EVO!

I wouldn’t analyze anything anybody says about EVO game selection. People that bitch about probably don’t even play those games. I’ve never been to EVO but from what I understand, a lot of games are represented at casual stations and side tourneys so it doesn’t really matter in the end. It doesn’t matter if you can watch it on stream when you can actually go to EVO and play the game. I’m contemplating on going to EVO to go for my main game which isn’t anywhere close to being on the grand stage.

@Belegorm Those types are the ones who stunt the growth of the FGC as a whole. More variety of fighting games equals more people who will watch Evo and maybe pick up a fighter.

Hey just curious. Would Vampire Savior be considered “anime” or somewhere in between, like it blurrs the line between “anime” and traditional fighter? Because when I play Savior I can’t help but notice a lot of the “anime fighter” things are there albeit to a lesser extent. I.E a select few characters can air dash, air blocking, bright and vibrant character designs, emphasis on offensive play. But there are also traditional elements. I.E A ground game, footsies, short damaging combos,( although characters like BB Hood, Felicia and Jedah can get crazy ) anti airs actually being effective. Anyone care to weigh in on this?

All things in existence are actually anime. You just have to believe.

Everything is anime. Even Marvel.

I think it would qualify as “anime before anime existed,” it was part of the inspiration for GG.

Well of course Marvel is. People just dispute that because it has Marvel characters. But you just say that jokingly right? I mean MK series or Smash wouldn’t be considered “anime fighter”
