I’m not saying it’s right, but you have a kid who probably actively pursued this relationship with someone who, granted should have known better, and then goes on to ruin that person’s entire life just because they wanted to high five their buddies? But we’re talking consensual sex, regardless of whether the teacher is male or female. Also take into account the fact that a 15 year old now is a lot different from a 15 year old 20 years ago. If the kid was 16 (age of consent) would this still be a big deal? She’s probably going to get jail time or at least community service, won’t be able to teach ever again, and has to endure public shame, so it’s not like she’s getting away with anything.

First off, age of consent in any given (every?) state is 18 if the person is in a position of authority or trust. Basically, you can bang 16/17 year olds in your state as long as you aren’t their teacher or guardian or pastor or whatever.

The key word in “statutory rape” is statutory. It’s against the law and that it is all. If the boy was a few months older and she taught at a different school, this wouldn’t be a news story at all.
