Fei Long Q&A: Ask simple questions here!

Still missing information about cls.MP , cls.HP though. Tried yesterday and could only get it to work against standing Blanka, Dee Jay and Fuerte (didn’t test against crouching characters).
It only works off a jumpin-attack (I used j.MP) and you have to walk forward for probably exactly 1 frame after the cls.MP. That makes it really hard to do. Not reliable imo.

Against crouching targets here is a vid i made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-IqJJBLcII

Nice. Looks like there’s no walking forward needed against crouching Dudley.

Hello Fei Long players, how do I approach match ups in which the opponent can possibly out turtle Fei, or make him come to them? The matchups I’m specifically having trouble with are against shotos, Balrog/Boxer, and Bison/Dictator. I like to “put up a wall” with Fei, and it seems like against those characters they don’t really ever have to approach me. How should I approach this kind of match?

My approach to bison:

Mindset
Be patient. Bison has better good horizontal pressure than fei.

Goto Normals

  • cr.hp [stuffs scissors, bison’s st.hk]
  • st.lp with hp rekka os (has to be fast, so that u don’t get a buffered hp rekka) [stuffs st.mk]
  • st.hp is solid too.

Bison’s Weakness

  • poor wake up
  • bait the ex-psycho crusher and punish with ex-rekka
  • bait ex-devil reverse and low forward that
  • whiff scissors by back-dashing / neutral jump [most special that are safe on block have horrible recovery]

Things to be careful of:

  • Bison’s forward dash is gdlk
  • frame traps [i think close fierce]

Punishes

  • 3 frame punishes for slide, ex-scissors [cr.lp rekka]

Specials

  • mk cw beats at a certain range his footsies [the range is similar to st.hp]

to add some more tips against bison:

  • buffer an EX CW with your safe jump attacks to catch his wakeup teleport. Alternatively, you can buffer flame kick instead if he’s abusing wakeup EX psycho

  • if you block bison’s head press and he’s going for the followup attack, you can ultra 1 him as he lands

  • cr.MP or cr.MK is a good gamble in your favor after blocking a scissor kick. If bison immediately goes for another scissor kick, your attack will beat its long startup time. Of course, don’t get careless or else he’ll start using the invincible EX scissor kick

  • occasionally wakeup with a MK CW. It has invincibility to beat meaty grabs and attacks, and is -2 on block

balrog is one of fei’s tougher matchups, but there are some things to know that will help:

  • make balrog hesitant on dash punching by neutral jump and focusing occasionally
  • all of balrog’s dash punches are unsafe on block. Look up his frame data and practice in training mode punishing them. The only exceptions that are safe for balrog are some of the EX versions, his LP dashing punch at max distance and his lvl-1 turning punch
  • stay out of his grab range. Balrog players have a high tendency to walk up and throw
  • keep your frame traps short and less frequent. Balrog players also have a high tendency to just throw an EX headbutt and into U1
  • like with bison, wakeup with MK CW occasionally to discourage him from grabbing you or going for a anti-crouch tech attempt
  • alternate your spacing game. You can stay within a range so that his dash punches are unsafe if executed from that distance, or stay at a range where his dash punch can whiff and be punished

Just wondering what how you guys think Fei does against these MU’s:

c.Viper
Yun
Chun-Li
T Hawk
Zangief
Hugo
Juri
Gen
Cammy
Akuma
Adon
Rose
Rufus
Guile

Alright lab time before evo. Really need help with os stuff. I always see people talking about his os into rekka. I’ve never done these or practiced them. Any os advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The games not been out long enough to say for certain but going from past matches, some experience and the new data -

Fei Long first.

c.Viper - 4-6
Yun - 5-5 (Could be 4-6 though , Yun is probably one of the best in the game now)
Chun-Li 5-5
T Hawk 6-4
Zangief 5-5
Hugo 6-4 (could be 7-3, I don’t rate Hugo at all)
Juri 6-4
Gen 6-4
Cammy 5-5
Akuma 5-5 (this might actually be advantage now, Akuma’s nerfs play into Fei’s hands here, as well as DWU)
Adon 5-5
Rose 4-6 (Debatable but I think Rose beats Fei)
Rufus 6-4
Guile -4-6 (Damage nerf hurts Guile a little here but I still think he wins)

Thanks. I forgot to add Bison to the list. How does fei fare against him?

I think Thawk, Gen and Bison are 5-5. Cammy 6-4, maybe 7-3, Juri 5-5.

Could be, I don’t play any good Gens. Hawk is really strong but I still think Fei has the tools to beat him.

is the chun matchup really 5-5? I always have a hard time getting in because her ground normals and slow fireballs are really good at controlling the space. Her overhead flip kick is only -1 or 0 on block and the EX version is an incredibly good wakeup tool for her as it’s a lot safer than traditional DP’s

His basic and the most consistent OS would be cr.lk, cr.lp+cr.hp, cr.lp. If they backdash on wakeup the cr.lk will whiff and the cr.hp will come out instead and punish the recovery on most characters’ backdashes. You can substitute cr.hk instead of cr.hp if they’re in the corner.

His OS rekka is cr.lk, close st.lk ~mp rekka, cr.lp. You have to get the close st.lk and not far st.lk in order for cr.lp to combo or be a blockstring. Also versus some characters like Honda you’ll tend to get far st.lk unless you’re almost point blank range.

Then there’s matchup specific OS like versus Blanka in the corner, if you think he’ll do a wakeup EX rainbow roll to escape you can go for meaty cr.lk, cl st.lk + cl st.hp (or hk), cr.lp. If he does a reversal EX Rainbow roll on wakeup you’ll hit him out of the air with cl st.hp.

Hopefully most of these should still work. Due to the Rekka nerf in USF4, the lp Rekka OS in the video now becomes what IsleySilverKing mentioned above^

Sweet thanks guys! The non chaining lk nerf is a bummer after watching this lol

Yeah, the second c.lk will turn into a c.lp instead.

Ok maybe I’m missing something here, I feel like I miss cr jab into rekka a lot. I see online people hitting it all the time and I do it and I land it maybe fifty percent. Do you you guys constantly buffer rekka during cr lp? If so what strength?

I kind of piano from hp to lp. The input ends up looking like a plink.

I wouldn’t say I buffer it because its reactionary for me, I tend to only use it when I know the cr jab will hit.

Edit. Not related, but watch your rekkas on Elena. They seem to need to hit deeper if she’s crouching. I had a few max distance hp rekkas connect but then have the next hits drop :frowning:

Depends the character, if it’s someone that can’t consistently punish the lp rekka I’ll get close and double tap lp into lp rekka.

From the mid range though you can cr.lp qcf mp rekka to catch pokes, it option selects the rekka if you catch a stray normal (think Bison st.hk) but you can’t do this inside block range.
