Features you'd like to see added to/removed from a fighting game

MK’s strings aren’t quite what I’m looking for, they felt too linear and stiff to me, and it seemed like the majority of them weren’t cancelable in anyway. I can’t speak for Injustice, I played the game like once and I didn’t really care for it. Maybe I’ll have to give the game another look, a friend of mine told me once the combo’s in that game had some kind of RB2 flair to them. Maybe I’ll bite the next time the steam version is discounted.

  • Frame data
  • Great online matching system
  • Color edit mode (but without ridiculous colors)
  • Be able to see the actual colors in the character select menu (Like Blazblue). This might not seem like something important but it really is to me.

It’s 2014, there’s no excuse for any fighter to have terrible netcode.

Reminds me of the Senzu Bean item in Super DBZ. If you lose a round, your character eats a Senzu Bean, causing them to stand up with invincibility frames as well as recovering a little health. The more super meter they had when dying, the more health they recover (up to like 35% with a full stick of butter IIRC). Only worked on the first round you lost though, and during the wakeup animation you still had to be ready to defend against a throw setup when the invincibility wore off.

Practicing Chun Li stun combos in ST makes me wish there was a visual aid to help you know when and where to press the buttons for it to combo right.

MK9, if rumours are to be believed, started out as a 3D fighting game before being switched to 2D. Some of the weirdness in the system (left/right stances affecting combos, etc.) is apparently due to this. As for Injustice, it seems to me that they’ve gotten the hang of things more with their engine and they’ve figured out a better combo flow. That said, part of the problem with both games is that there isn’t really any hit confirming and you tend to rely on confirming of strings instead.

I never had a problem with MK9 and Injustice lack of hitconfirms. I like the idea the games force you to commit to combos.

Never liked how it made the games feel like they didn’t have footsies. At least not in the traditional sense (IMO, I prefer the term “stringsies” instead). That, plus the fact that I could never really adjust to the 3D-like frame data is why I dropped the game after playing it at only 1 major.

I’m willing to forgive the pre-buffering system and lack of hit confirms, but why is there startup and recovery on walking? Everyone moves like a segway except Flash and Batman when he walks forward. It’s hard to get where you want/need to go without dashing or jumping, which are not safe. You have to commit to everything in that game…

I’ve been only casually skimming this thread and I like a lot of these ideas, but here’s one I don’t think I’ve seen yet: The ability to set the Player one to start on the Player 2 side or vice versa; at the very least for training mode.
I can’t even count how many times I’ve seen comments from people about how much they can’t do DPs from the 2 player side. Granted it’s easy enough to switch sides by jumping or rolling past the dummy or whatever, but I think it can break the muscle memory groove you are tying to instill in yourself. Also it’s a nuisance to try and perfect that opening round spacing. Ideally I’d like to see it in all modes like KOF XIII does for versus. Before you start you pick left or right side, which is awesome for tournaments, no switching seats or whatever so you are sitting one the side you are playing from (BlazBlue might do this too but it’s been a while since I’ve owned it to check)

Edit: Also if I recall, SFIV had a command to auto corner the dummy in either training mode or trials, that’s a really nice feature especially if you are trying to work on meter or spacing specific set ups. I like the idea of lock a position for restart even better.

Walking the dummy to the corner is very annoying. I guess what I’m essentially looking for is a save state command on that.

But pick a side when entering a mode other than versus is something I don’t see often enough.
