I’m more than fine for a pay increase for fast food employees, as long as other companies in every other field offer a equivalent pay increase. Of course all of the CEOs will bitch to their lobbyists, who will bitch to the various congressmen, who will in turn bitch to media, who will then spin it to make it sound like the lower and middle class are greedy.
How fucking “qualified” does someone need to be to work in fast food. People on the regular DON’T get hired because they are over-qualified. Assuming wages do go up, management would rather just keep the people who know the job (and now realize they need to get their act together if they wanna keep it) than bother dealing with new trainees
I already posted this…Instead of getting your usual 40hr $9 per hr rate, they will cut down your hours to probably 25-30hrs instead w/ less staffing. So end game, you will get your $15 per hr rate but you will be making the same amount total but now with less staff. Meanwhile the corporate will start putting in touch screens to fill customer orders, pretty soon less staff & more Johnny 5.
And this is the flip side of the argument, which I understand extremely well since my dad is a Burger King franchisee. It’s super rare to find someone that will work at a BK for more than 2 months without pulling multiple no call/no shows, getting caught trying to steal food/cash, or just being a piece of shit while on the clock.
From the surprisingly sizable profits that are being collected by the CEOs and stock holders. It’s rather impressive how much the gap has widened between Wall Street/CEOs and everyone else over the past 30 years.
unskilled labor has very little value. how do you expect to support yourself and/or a family when your skill is putting the right toppings on a burger? these jobs are not meant for people who need to support a family and live the ‘good life’. they’re entry level, anyone-can-get-em jobs for teens, students, and old farts on SSI.
labor has no inherent value, only the value given to it by the market. when your job can be done by pretty much everyone on the planet, you aren’t going to squeeze much out of the market.
and it’s been repeated ad nauseum, but it’s the truth - if you give people like this wages at 15 an hour, all jobs currently paying 15 an hour (usually requiring a lot more worth as an employee to get) will either disappear or be forced to increase their wages a commensurate level.
tl;dr minimum wage is stupid horseshit, labor has no inherent value, and no one owes you a living wage.
experience: i’ve worked at 12 different fast food joints in my life.
Shit, tons of places are already pulling the 25-30 hr a week business already, just to avoid having anyone get full time benefits, which would include health care once the Affordable Care Act becomes live.
For the amount of shitty hard work fast food workers have to do, 15 bucks is far from unreasonable. Anyways this is a great thing, fast food is why most Americans are fat and many are obese. How many fat kids do u see waddling around? It’s disgusting. It’s public indecency and a pain to my eyes and everyone else who isn’t fat probably those who are to. Maybe these people will actually have to eat something healthier, even if it doesn’t increase their exercise regimen.
Considering the fact I’ve met many American people working overseas, who all have good educations and want to work but can’t find work in their home country, I’m wondering how many non-‘labor’ jobs there are.
that’s just your fucking opinion though. we can’t start basing wages on what ‘feels’ right or else this economy will really start nose-diving worse than it already is.
the market determines value. how much someone wants what you have to offer, how rare your particular skillset is. if you’re a weed, you’re fucked. don’t be a weed.
