Gentle criticism:

Tournament seeding has to improve over the last one. Yes, I understand somebody let the computer do (allegedly) weighted random seeding, but the fact remains that that computer still managed to put the two eventual grand finalists up against each other in the first round, and anybody with any knowledge of the bay area tournament scene and how to seed a tournament bracket knows that’s a minor disaster. Tinh and Crizzle themselves were going to be just fine, it’s the poor slobs who otherwise might get to play longer because they’re supposed to be playing people who actually deserve to be in the losers’ bracket in the first round who then have to play one of those two that it sucks for. That person happened to be me, after I got stuck against Nick from Modesto in the second round and then wound up against Crizzle in my very first losers’ bracket match. I went down fighting, and I did deserve to lose to those guys with the way I was playing on Saturday (come on… Crizzle’s Cable with less than a centimeter of life against three living characters, and I coughed up a tie? Yeah, I sucked that day :shake: ), but I still walked away feeling a little screwed by the brackets.

If you want randomness, the better way you should do it is to first annoint at least four guys who you think are probably going to be in the final four. Seed those guys – whether it’s random or it’s seeded 1 vs 4/2 vs 3 doesn’t really matter, but those four guys should not run into each other before the winners’ semis if they all win out. Then everybody else can come out of a hat or a random computer generation. The ideal outcome is for everybody who’s just not quite good enough at least to have a good chance of playing their way through against other people on their own level and not feel like they got screwed because they ran into a Crizzle in their first round of the losers’ bracket. The only reason a guy like Crizzle should ever be in the losers’ bracket in Fairfield after his first match is if he utterly screws the pooch and eats a major upset. Tinh is not a major upset, he won the tournament.

I got told that the reason Crizzle and Tinh in the first round happened is because one of those guys wasn’t at the previous tournament so the computer didn’t have a way of knowing this was a preview of the grand finals. If that’s the case, then the algorithm is broken and needs to be tossed or have a way of giving greater weight to human judgment for players that it doesn’t have data on.

Not trying to whine, just trying to improve the process. (And yeah, I need to step up more next time in my playing and give Crizzle a better reason to think he needs to start pulling out the bag of tricks to beat me than I gave him last week. :bluu: )

Thanks Stilt. I will do those things next time. That was my 2nd tourney, I’m still learning.

I thought the random seeding bracket was pretty crazy and intense… I agree with what stiltman said about the bracket, that it should been done a lot better.

Me vs crizzle first round then chunksta 2nd and korngo in winner… Thats a pretty tough and HARD bracket for myself and if anyone had my bracket , they would know how it feel like. In all major tournament 1st place winner is always seeded on top and 2nd is all the way to the bottom and you seperate ppls by where they are from, skills level or whatever to make it fair. Ppls that didnt place high enough should fight for there spot on the bracket or whatever.

PS: Nick is from sacramento not modesto =]

LOL, not trying to be an ass or anything, but you don’t like Crizzle tricks don’t you?

im a poor slob.

hey guys, look at what i found!

Tio is better, and has a lot more options check it out!

and on seeding…

I understand where you are coming from entirely, but you have to understand that the absolute fairest way to do an event like this, especially one that is open to whoever wants to come is to do 100% computer randomized seeding. When you talk about having a tournament that is a “series” of tournaments that are like “Opens” in tennis where you have a solid player base, then weighting your seeds is more realistic.

Nothing is set in stone as of yet, but in my tournament I feel that I am somewhat obligated to make the brackets 100% random because of the fact that It will be the first of a larger series of tournaments. As the tournaments play out and “favorites” are established we can then have some numerical value to how we base our weighted seeding. Much like what was said above, if a player doesn’t show up for previous events and isnt in the database for the event coordinators, it is unfair to other players to weight brackets on your or other peoples opinions on how good “X” player is, whether or not it is the correct thing to do.
Whenever you try and organize any type of competition as the coordinator you always have to think of what is fair for the players, and in making things fair it is imperative that you make it very clear to them how you do things and why you do them. It becomes very sticky very quickly if you have to explain why player “X” “Y” and “Z” cant play each other in the first round because “I know they’re good” rather than being able to have a system that plays towards fairness and leaves opinions out of the equation.

Bottom line is your seeding has to be based on FACTS not OPINIONS.
I could argue with 10 people all day about how player X is better than Player Y and that Z sucks and only got in because he got lucky, but when you have that algorithm to back things up, its all ready to go.
