Evil Ryu Q&A Thread: Ask simple questions here!

This is going to be a weird question. How many of you guys can hit confirm c.lk, CL.lk xx special? Like do it and tick throw/frame trap if they block or cancel the cl.lk to dp or hk tatsu on hit. Or c.mk xx ex fireball, fadc, ultra?

I’m not trying to stroke an epeen or anything. I’m a scrub like most of you guys in here. This is the only facet of the game I’m very good at. I lose all the time because my footsies aren’t good, I don’t block enough and I’ve got some execution issues. I’m kind of thinking of making a guide or video on how to hit confirm and dp attacks on reaction, though. I see people post that this or that can’t be hit confirmed or that can’t be dp’d on reaction, but most of the time they’re wrong. I can do that stuff and I don’t have some crazy reaction speed. I take those online reaction tests and score between 150ms and 200ms, which is average. I think there’s just some things I do or watch that most people aren’t watching. For instance, most people watch their own character when they’re playing and watch their opponent out of their peripheral vision. If you want to dp when Adon Jag Kicks you, you gotta watch Adon. Or that Sako hit confirm people were talking about. C.mp, cl.hp xx fireball/mk axe kick. I saw people posting that they couldn’t do it, but it’s easy for me, and since I score average on a reaction speed test, I’m pretty sure it’s not cuz I’m superhuman…it’s got to be technique.

I just don’t think I’ve seen a vid or read about this anywhere. I know I heard/read somewhere to watch my opponents character and not my own. Maybe the Street Fighter Podcast(gootecks). Wherever it was, though, they didn’t explain it much. Still took me 5 years to start doing it.

“most people watch their own character when they’re playing and watch their opponent out of their peripheral vision.” most people do the opposite of that…

I just try to unfocus my eyes and watch both characters at the same time during certain situations. But generally of course you need to be looking at them. And there are characters with moves that are safe on block but punishable on reaction, so you should always be looking to uppercut that. And yes, one frame links like anything into clst.hp are technique, not speed.

Does anybody here link into c.hp? It seems a hell of a lot harder than s.hp.

Sorry…Most people watch their own character to often.

We’re taking things out of context. If you read on in his post, he says “You gotta watch Adon” in order to react to Jaguar Kicks. Indeed, you get a lot more visual cues from focusing entirely on your opponent, so it makes sense to not watch your own character. It’s a hard thing to remember, but when it becomes a habit it helps tremendously.

Salutations!

Just finished reading a few pages and it’s been rather insightful. Been a casual player for a while, trying to change that a bit. Been trying my hand at Evil Ryu and was wondering if any of you guys play on PSN.

Just looking to play some endless with some folks, constructive criticism and the like. xx007iam <— tis’ me. FYI live in Nova Scotia (eastern Canada) for dem’ connection snobs.

Anyway, nice thread. Sorry for my lack of Q in the Q & A form. Feel free to add me.

This is my first time playing a shoto for serious, so I’ve had issues with knowing when to throw fireballs. Should I stay just out of poke range, close enough that I can easily get in some c.mk’s, and throw fireballs so that they can’t react to them very well? Full or 3/4th screen fireballs just don’t do anything for me.

I only throw them out at 2.5/4 and 3/4 of the screen (2.5/4 of the screen is AA-SRK distance and 3/4 is just throwing out red fireballs (mp or hp, so they can’t build ultra meter)). Except in the first round, where I throw 1 or 2 right at the beginning just so that my opponent knows/thinks I’m willing to throw them out up close. Eventually they will grow tired of neutral jumping and chip, so they will advance forward. Then play the waiting/baiting game so you can anti-air, KaraSRK, far st.HK and U2 are godlike for this.
(This is my fireball game)

In most cases it depends on the char you are playing against. You will have an easier time throwing fireballs against grappler’s then lets say Cammy. Sometimes against Ryu, Juri, Guile and Sagat you have to play the fireball game! Fireball game is about feeling out your opponent, try to see what they do, how soon they lose patience then take that info and apply it to your game so you can destroy them once there close.

IMO, I think the fireball game only applies to E.Ryu to an extend. It will show your patience that you don’t care if the game draws out. Remember we do 400+ damage of a bnb, you have enough time. Once they know you will not crack, they crack and will come to you and then you can play your game.

No, they don’t. His fireballs are the same as Ryu, except the EX version.

Wow, I could have sworn he had more recovery. Thanks for clearing that up!

What are the ways you can link into mk axe kick from another axe kick (light or medium). I’ve seen PR Balrog do a number of variations on his stream, but I don’t pay attention that well.
It still continues to be pretty damn hard to get FADC c.lp close s.hp links.

For Light Axe Kick, you can confirm into St. MP or Cr. MK and cancel into it.
LK Axe Kick FADC, Cr. LP, Cl. HP xx MK Axe Kick
LK Axe Kick FADC, Cl. MP xx MK Axe Kick

Medium Axe Kick will only combo from a heavy, Close MP, or a counter-hit Cr. MK or St. MP. If you want to FADC it, you have options. The second option below is the most damaging, but it has two one-frame links.
MK Axe Kick FADC, Cr. LP, Cl. HP xx MK Axe Kick
MK Axe Kick FADC, Cr. MP, Cl. HP xx MK Axe Kick (need to test and see if this works on all characters)
MK Axe Kick FADC, Cl. MP xx MK Axe Kick

If fighting Rufus, you can do

Cl. HP/Cl. MP xx MK Axe Kick, Cr. LP, Cr. HP xx MK Axe Kick, St. LP…

Lk axe kick will combo when canceled from cl.mp, s.mp, cl.mk, c.mk, cl.hp and c.hp. Mk axe kick combos from cl.mp, c.hp, and cl.hp. Just learn how to link into those normals and you’re good for combos like that.

I know the basic stuff, just wondering to what extent it actually goes. Just wish I could link into c.lp.

The combo people are using is cl.hp xx mk axe kick, c.lp, s.mp xx lk axe kick xx fadc, c.lp, cl.hp xx mk axe kick, c.mp xx lk tatsu, hp dp.

That’s what I’m trying to do. I have the c.lp s.hp link to some extent, but the c.lp after FADC I just can’t get.

There’s always the Cl. MP link you can do instead. It can be plinked, whereas the LP cannot (unless you mod your stick), making Cl. MP a more reliable option.

The LP can be plinked with the back/select button, if you have your stick re-wired or have the Hori Fighting Edge stick that Sako uses.

Hi guys! I seem to have some problems when facing charged based characters, I don’t know if it just on my mentality but I can’t seem to approach the match-ups very well. Can you guys please give me some general thought on how to approach those kind of characters? Thanks

I can’t fight Bison and Balrog is still difficult, but don’t forget far s.mp.
