Evil Ryu Q&A Thread: Ask simple questions here!

So I’ve finally maned up and started playing this game with the intention of finally learning how to play for realz. I’m super competitive and love the game. But as anyone would agree with, this game has quite the difficult learning curve – but I’m slowly going through the process of learning how to do links correctly and the whole FADC cancel stuff. My question is…how long did it take you to become capable of using evil ryu (or any character really) to his fullest potential in terms of comboing etc? Keep in mind too that I’m trying to put in about 4 hours a day. Any insight as always much appreciated

no comment (on your how long did it take question) as i used ryu for the first couple months then went to cody and i picked up e ryu in the last month [i started this summer in june playing seriously].

Learn how to plink and learn your setups off F throw, b throw, ex axe kick, and FADC axe kick after a lk tatsu and you should be good. past that is just footsies/fundamentals

Ya, to be honest… Just get down the cl.HP xx axeMK BB setups… including like switching it up and linking crxxmp to hadoken and repeating the loop… or sweep on chars like Dhalsim and Sakura etc…I also almost never go for cheesy mixups after the tastu and just maximize damage because its really not worth it not to, especially because its extremly easy to stun with E.RYU. Also! On most characters, especially those with bad wakeup, its very important to learn fadc to HKAxekick at the end of your combo granting you the untechable knockdown. If you land a big combo finishing with that and then get your next mixup they will be stunned and missing at least half-3/4 of their total hp or in extreme cases (Ibuki, Akuma, Cammy, Seth, Twins, etc…) you can basically kill them after the stun, especially in the corner… OHHHH also, cr.mp to throw…too strong ahahaha

But to maximize any forms of damage… You need to be able to FADC well… because honestly evil ryu does massive damage but he has a hard time intially getting and staying in without having taking a lot of damage and he bleeds badly. Cr.MKxxHadokenxxFADC needs to be your best friend to get in and do major dmg then play zone properly or go in hard to go for stun… I’m coming out with some gameplay video’s soon that I will link up for everyone

I wonder if I’m alone on this but holy christ doing fadc when facing left is totally doable. however facing right I just can’t seem to fucking do it. (the actual combo I’m trying to master is “shoryuken FADC Ultra1”) I think it’s only a matter of time – almost as if I need to build up muscle in my hand that wasn’t there before or something. Anyways yeah it’s just been really difficult and I’ve already wasted way too many hours only to repeatedly fail. But dammit once I get this down everything else should take far less time to master ^^

OMG FINALLY!!! just fucking did it! lol!~ took my time… i was like ok shoryuken, FADC – shoruken, FADC – etc then shoryuken, FADC hadouken (o.0) then finally shoryuken, FADC, metsuhadouken!!! holy shit I kid you not I’ve spent at least 12 hours failing that over and over and over again. Finally success! Finally! It’s almost like that time when I finally beat mike tyson on the nes lmao~!! Seriously fuck yeah man this took me forever! I feel inspired again!!! woot!

I totally agree with this as resets can be tricky to make work but check out this KOK vs Michael Tan game

unreal on the corner resets

However i still dont use them myself as i havent gotten my E ryu fundamentals down yet.

Goddamn, KOK is so badass. He even charged the Ultra a little after the Focus crumple to close out that last round. I’ve heard that E. Ryu’s teleport is garbage, but I noticed he used it in one oki situation. I guess if you use it very rarely it can be a one-time surprise getaway?

Why wouldn’t you go for a cheesy reset at the end of a combo instead of a heavily scaled SRK that makes you lose Oki?

If you stun at the end of the combo, it’s whatever. If you stun at the beginning of one, it’s the round.

When they cross you up like that, you get a bit farther from them. Was just out of range of step kick, but tatsu might have hit him. The teleport is garbage, but there’s even a good time to use garbage.

And, commentators still don’t know about evil ryu. Not knowing about his kara fireball. KOK should slap them.

How do you kara fireball? Cr.mk? If so F that.

Yep. It’s difficult, but it’s usable. I used to hit it consitantly, but I haven’t been playing enough lately. C.mk gives you a good kara dp and focus, too.

The focus is ezpz but shit the fireball seems impossible while the throw seems in between in in difficulty. Never used the kara dp though

How are you doing the fireball? It’s easier than the throw. Inputs need to be perfect, but you just need to do d, df, f, df, mk~hp. Like this, you use the shitty input buffer to your advantage, but you can only add the one extra directional input. If you accidentally hit any other direction, you just get c.mk. It’s not as hard as it sounds, though. Kara dp is the same basically…just do a crouching dp motion and then mk~hp. It’s not amazing cuz you can only do hp dp or ex dp(kinda hard), but it’s nice to surprise people with. Can walk back nice and far, then kara dp and still cancel it.

Poongko has some good corner resets too. Something also thats really good/extremly easy to do is Kara Super. There is a tip video on it but all you need to do is hit f.MK and in the air you buffer two lp’s. Then if say the guy backdashes jumps backwards, cr.mk and ryu jumps over it but doesnt hit him… etc. you just hit fwd-> HP and light kick at the same time… and huzzah, easy super.

Can you get anything off of j.LK against a cornered opponent? It’s sweet how it looks like it will crossup then doesn’t, but I haven’t been able to connect anything after it.

No. But a lot of the time the followup cr.lp/cl.mp will connect if they didn’t block the original non-crossup. Or just tick throw.

Yeah, that’s kind of what I was thinking; just use the confusion it creates to start something else.

you definitively can to connect a 3f move after a j.lk in the corner. I do it all the time with those ambiguous setups.

Yeah, I could have sworn I got something once, but haven’t been able to replicate it since. I guess it’s a really tight link. I’ll keep trying!

I can’t connect Hop Kick > Ex Tatsu into Ultra 2, is my timing wrong on the ultra or what
