Enter the Chaos Dimension! Shuma-Gorath Combo thread

It’s basically holding a charge while doing something else… when I talk about it, I mean dashing. It’s a pain, especially in a game like this.
Just sit down and practice is like this.
-Hold back until you know you have a mystic stare charge
-dash forward then immediately tap back then tap forward
If you do it fast enough, you keep the charge and get the dash.
In theory, if you do this fast enough there isn’t any noticeable downtime causes from doing this, and you can effectively dash across the screen while holding a charge. It’s great for neutral as you can pull out the high durability projectile at any time, and should significantly improve midscreen damage, but it’s very frustrating to do. You are essentially splitting the charge up. It was a popular tactic for characters like Urien in third strike. I’m sure you could find a bunch of videos on how to do it. I feel like it might become a necessary thing to do as a shuma player as he is a charge based character stuck in a marvel game where he should be able to do the charge moves on the spot, but there is a way to overcome that barrier… it’s just really really hard.

Also, angelic, please update the op

I think the hit stun deterioration is to much to land a mystic stare. It would have to be a really short combo. And that charge partitioning stuff is so impractical haha

It shouldn’t be too much. You are still hitting the crouching h when the eyes explode just like the corner variation. I don’t think it’s impractical. Things I consider impractical are things like doing a shuma combo with nemesis and iron fist assists like that one japanese combo. It’s only impractical at the end because no one should run shuma with those assists. Difficult? Yes. Impractical? No.

Impracticality refers to something as unrealistic or not sensible. I can easily go to training mode right now and do basic forms of dash partitioning mystic stares, but I can’t plink dash while doing it because I don’t have the execution. It’s just a branch of what I can do, and I would need to practice it a lot if I ever want to be able to do it. It’s not impractical though.

Ok I got the concept down now my only problem is dashing multiple times withhout accidentally doing Mystic Stare. It’s so easy to do with Mystic Ray :frowning:

Yea screw trying to charge partition a back to forward charge move. My brain can’t even comprehend how it’s possible to plink dash while doing a backwards charge. I can wave dash while charge partitioning Mystic Ray…if that counts haha

Sorry I know its real late and you probably found some already but these are some of his most damaging and opponent depressing combos I know of which are all pretty much all solo TOD and air throw and Cmd throw conversions, TOD off a throw? Shuma is ridiculous.

mid screen and Cmd throw combos.

TOD with assist not that he really needs it but it demoralizes your opponent.

Air throw conversions, these dont really show full dmg potential but it does show how to get things started.

Yeah we’ve seen them before. Use spoilers next time.
Angelic update the op!

ok 1 mil xfc 3 shuma combo off of a confirm using no levels and midscreen…i think that’s the best i can do

Can you do a vid or some notations?

i like all these loops im reading about. im new to shuma, and i cant wait to see if i create anything worth sharing. this is an amazing thread, you all know your chaos dimensionist lol.

Heres a cool xf lvl3 Suma perfect comeback video from a JPN turny at 36:15

Haha the good old dash back and hit em low, wish my comebacks were that easy haha.

Not much point in learning this corner combo, but I had some fun coming up with it. It builds a little bit more meter and does a little more damage than the normal bnb. I just wanted to see if I could have an air dash bnb.

I’m a beginner and very bad at this game, but I still want to main Shuma. I just don’t really know what combos I should run for now. I am not technical enough for those fancy charge combos which I have no idea how to do, but is there an easier alternative I could use for now?

Shuma is probably the most execution intensive character in this game unfortunately next to viper and her staircase loops, and probably some singled out combos from other characters. Shuma’s damage is pretty “honest” also. A lot of characters can get by with some derpy ass combos like one doctor doom rep into super does 600k for some reason and 7 does like 800k (lol). I don’t know that [shuma has a lot of easy damaging options, but you could try to roll with jump loops like c.l c. m c.h jump cancel [jm jm jh j  h] repeat in brackets. In the corner, it’s a lot easier to be derpy with combos since you can probably do a magic series combo into a m mystic ray otg standing m launch bbcs super, but knocking up damage is pretty hard if you’re new midscreen due to how his jump s works. Best of luck. Check out the op if it helps. The op is so outdated that it’s basically on day 1, so it should be pretty helpful

Well I am willing to do a lot of work towards this character, but I’d like to first get actually decent at this game before working on intensive combos. How does this charge partitioning thing work? I’ve heard it’s pretty much essential, but I have no idea, I’m new to fighters.

I wouldn’t say it’s essential if you are new. Charge partitioning is essentially just breaking up a charge by a motion. This motion is usually a dash. So in the case of shuma, you could hold back to buffer mystic stare then dash. During this dash, you can hold back to preserve the charge. At the end of the dash, you can release the charge, and it will have kept your charge throughout that entire series. At this point in time, charge partitioning is purely for neutral (the game when no one is being comboed). I wouldn’t reccomend learning it right now.
On the topic of execution in this game. I feel like there are 2 times of execution heavy characters in this game. There are the “my hands are going to breaaaak” type execution characters like viper or morrigan. Then there is shuma. His combos aren’t difficult in that sense. They are difficult because they have some very specific timings and little nuisances in them. You also have to be on your a game to account for character sizes, and the angle that shuma is hitting them, or they will fall out. If you practice them enough, you should be fine. Essentially what you are going for is learning to hold back, up back, or down back during certain parts of combos to hold a charge for use shortly after during the combo. This isn’t really charge partitioning since you are allowed to just hold back.

In the OP there is a combo where you have to do a Mystic Stare M after a cr.H. How the hell is that even possible? And your explanation of charge partition made no sense to me. :frowning:

Mystic stare charges from any back motion. So if you are transitioning from crouching h to mystic stare, you can charge it by doing down back.

Let me break it down.

  1. You hold back for x seconds
  2. You dash
  3. During this dash, you hold back so the charge is maintained
  4. at the end of the dash, the mystic stare is preserved
You are breaking apart the charge time by inserting a dash inbetween, but you don’t need to worry about this really. Don’t bother with partitioning for now.

I still didn’t understand why partitioning made any sense or what it does. You are still holding back anyways even if you dash so what’s the point?
And if charge input is 2 seconds how can you do it after a mystic smash and cr.H. It takes like a second at best to do you need to be a wizard of some kind?

Let’s just take x combo.
Standing s, super jump, j. m (1 hit), h mystic smash, standing m, crouching h, mystic stare
How this works is basically:
After the jm input mystic smash.
During mystic smash hold back :b:
When you land, pressing standing m by inputting :b::m:
Input crouching m by pressing :db::m:
Input crouching h by pressing :db::h:
Cancel into mystic stare from the crouching h soft knockdown by transitioning from the :db: to :f:
Like I said, forget charge partitioning. It’s not relevant to you for now.
