English vs Japanese voices (Explain why)

don’t bother talking to specs.

I’m a bit surprised by the results so far.

Boston Labrys is exactly the reason why I chose Japanese in P4A. In other games, I could say it depends on the situation, I like the quirky accents in Street Fighter IV so I leave them in English. Then there’s games like Blazblue which has Tomokazu Sugita voicing Ragna and thus I leave it on Japanese since it sounds more epic.

There should be an option for both because some characters just sound better with other dubbing, especially if they’re from that homeland.

Ex: Honda sounds MUCH better in Japanese to me. As does Fei Long. His English VA doesn’t get down his passion or yelling quite like his Japanese VA can. Ken & Guile, I just don’t like them in Japanese. Yeah “Sonic Kaboom” can be funny the first few times, but it gets old. And I’d rather hear Flash Kick over Somersault anyday.

EDIT: Also, can we PLEASE get some English VAs for the next KOF game!? PLEASE!

Yeah, KOF XII had English. So when they left it in KOF XIII I wondered why they did that.

I like the Boston accent. Don’t see anything wrong with it

Me too. The accent’s pretty cute.

I like the Boston accent because it’s an accent I can never imitate, no matter how hard I try.

I dont know what shitty va sounds like in japanese so japanese

Speaking as someone that has one, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. I imagine I’d be mocked for it overseas

Wat da fuck u rlly no?

There are certainly good dubs that exist, for me, it is “is it a good dub?” If yes -> I generally prefer the dub, if not I go with subs. I used to swear by subs, and then realized that it wasn’t honestly all that much better.

As for nuances in the original language, those are generally well kept in good dubs, and puns are usually lost in subs as well, unless you want to read a paragraph long TL note explaining what was said, plastered over the video, having to pause to have enough time to read it. Even if it is, a lot of stuff translates awkwardly, a lot of basic comparisons are really over dramatized when TL’ed, but there isn’t really a way around it. (A friend explained this to me)

Not to mention that a lot of smaller sub groups that do more niche content or less popular content often have TL or grammatical issues in the shows that should be unacceptable. Granted, these shows probably wouldn’t have dubs, but at least a dub would have a proper translation over an early or poorly made sub for a show that would later become popular. The rush subbers may also have similar issues, although it isn’t as bad as I’ve seen in the past.

It’s the same with games, so it honestly depends on what I’ll be getting out of it. When people are just shouting attack names or whatnot, it doesn’t really matter to me because the VA isn’t the main focus of a game, but with video, it’s very different. With a game, just do whatever, for me, there is never really a preference, it is then whichever set is least annoying or distracting.

Loving the passive-aggressive posts in this thread. Tension turns me on so much.

I like the English voice because they don’t sound that bad. I only change it to Japanese when I’m used to them speaking Japanese, like Kazuya or Ryu.

The english voices aren’t that bad besides Teddie and Aigis, I prefer Elizabeth’s and Mitsuru’s english voices tbh. Kanji’s also isn’t bad.

I’M A USEFUL BEAR!

BEAR-SONA!

BEAR PASSING THROUGH!!

I haven’t heard much from the Japanese language track but I hate Rise’s Japanese voice. It sounds squeaky and I find it very annoying.

I don’t mind Teddie’s voice either, since the character is SUPPOSED to be annoying. He doesn’t say Bear-sona anymore though. :frowning:

Aigis, I’ve just learn to deal with her.

I usually put it on English if it’s bearable. Otherwise I put it on Japanese. Sadly Felicia’s(MVC3 vers.) English and JP were both annoying :frowning:

My only explanation for Lei is that he’s based on Jackie Chan’s international cop roles so he speaks both English and Chinese (heard Lei speak Chinese to Feng ONCE). There’s no excuse for Alisa or Zafina but w/e.

Actually, I’m okay with Labrys’ voice. At first, it was a little annoying, but I grew to like the accent. Huh.

What I REALLY don’t like is Chie’s new voice. Her old voice was so perfect in Persona 4! :'c Now she sounds like an annoying little girl. MY FAN HEART IS BROKEN.

I will say one thing, Cromartie High is an anime I love watching dubbed.
