I’m from Virginia. The neighboring county to where my mom was going to school shut down public schools for 5 years rather than integrate. When people say things were “a long time ago” I instantly know they are idiots. I can literally talk to living relatives about this shit. Interracial marriage was illegal in VA until 1967 and that’s only because a couple had to go all the way to the Supreme Court. They literally could arrest you for having interracial relationship before then. Things didn’t suddenly get better in in 1865. Hell, they put the same racist piece of shit Confederates back into power and they did everything in their power to get things as close to pre 1865 as possible. There is a reason the majority of Confederate monuments went up well after the Civil War.
