What are Fuerte’s options against shotos that jump HK backwards?

I figure guacamole grab is an option, but I am having difficulty getting it to go far enough to grab them since they are jumping back. The only thing that impaired them was the wall, but one air tatsu seemed to reset the situation. I really feel terrible playing fuerte and not knowing how to overcome such a stupid tactic.

If you follow them to the corner, then once they get there, you just have to make sure and regular airthrow them if they go for a tatsu escape. It works pretty flawlessly to stop that. You can also ex guac, if they are jumping back on reaction to your run, just run then cancel the run into ex guac(run, then press f, d, df, stick to neutral, LP~2K). Since it’s shotos you can’t really ultra their jump back safely since they can escape it with tatsus(ken sometimes cannot but the good shotos can easily).

As long as you don’t get impatient then all they are doing by jumping back is cornering themselves for you, just try not to let them tatsu out. Airthrow is very good

wait… airgrab beats tatsu??

I fully agree with the corner thing… it’s worked gorgeously.

Yes you can airgrab a tatsu. Much easier for me on reaction than guac. Just learn the spacing and when to grab. You should lookup what airgrab can beat. It’s quite an amazing move.

Well I mean when they try to jump tatsu to get out of a corner, it’s pretty easy

Air throw can grab tons of moves like regular tatsu, scissor kick, blanka balls, jab srk. It’s good stuff.

Just some stuff I thought I’d add.

A while ago, online, I tried to meaty slide into a downed Claw in a match, experienced some lag and found myself on the other side of the guy. At the time, I just cursed the lag, but after seeing Mechanica’s post on being able to slide/teleport through Boxer after a Tortilla, I got curious and did some playing around with it.

Firstly, The crouch HK slide kick skips a few frames of animation if you go neutral or hold the stick forward during recovery. In addition to that, Fuerte recovers standing almost a full step further forward than when holding the stick down. This can be useful for footsie tricks. You can bait by holding back or close distance by holding forward.

Next, I found you can slide through Boxer like a corpse hop after landing a backwards throw, and also immediately after Guacamole. Sliding after a backwards throw requires you to either walk forward a bit or quick step once before you slide. Timing is pretty easy on those. Ironically, I couldn’t get it to work with Tortilla.

Finally, I found that you can slide through Claw, E. Honda and Abel pretty easily after a normal sweep knockdown. Just get as close as you can. You can even do it by mashing crouch HK. For some reason, these characters allow you to go through them as they flip themselves up. Depending on your timing, you end up different distances away from your opponent as well, which makes it slightly more fun to play around with than f+MK, and allows mix up with normal meaty slide.

I also managed to slide through Guile this way, but the timing for him appears to be so tight I only got it to work a few times.

I tested on Abel, and found that you can slide through him with Claw’s slide kick as well. Couldn’t get it to work with Blanka and Dhalsim slide attacks though.

Also, something which I’m not sure has been mentioned yet. The first few frames of Tortilla as you are jumping counts as on the ground even if the animation shows you in the air. I found this out the hard way when I was baiting an Ultimate Atomic Buster. I normally bait UAB by running forwards, hitting MP for Tostada right before the wakeup. Tostada is airborne probably from the first few frames, as I’ve avoided UAB even when the Ultra animation started with my feet only just leaving the ground. Recently I’ve gotten cocky and tried reversing the run into Tortilla just as Zangief was getting up. My friend confirmed that he saw me airborne as the Ultra started up(about half a body length above the ground), but I still got grabbed for the lose.:wasted:

Can someone point me to the combo thread? Only thing I can see is the Fuerte infinite, the challenge combo thread, and the general Fuerte discussion which doesn’t have anything listed on the first few pages.

Much appreciation, only thing I got down that seems to work well as a link is FA>Dash>Meaty HK into his Leg throw, but that alone won’t cut it.

This is really it as far as combos…

RSF
FP xx Habanero Dash + HK (the precursor to RSF, and also what you should end RSF with)
Close HK xx EX Guac

Cool, makes playing him easier then since I go his dash mix-up’s down well, good to know he doesn’t have many complicated combos. Thanks for the help.

dash mix-ups? what do you mean?hehe i may be thinkin to hard right now but i wanna make sure that i understand what you mean by that so i dont respond to ya with useless info or things that i have seen or found myself that you may already know about  …oh,and i gotta know?will somebody, anybody PLZ TELL ME WHAT OKIZEME IS?! everybody knows about it except me! lol …figure its sort of important …thanks in advance

Okizeme is the Japanese term to basically mean “wakeup game.” And obviously it’s important since it’s a huge part of Fuerte play =)

You were thinking too hard, lol. I’m sure he just meant the habanero dash options like fajita buster, propeller, slide, etc…

lmao! thanks alot! i just didnt know that was the japanese term for that…got it haha… well for the second part i was gonna say something about his run/stop shinanigans like his low foward, run, stop, low foward (i can only do 3 i dunno if you can do more… im tryin though hehe)… he has combos with thoes that are kinda tough if you are just getting execution skills…thats why i asked =)

ive been playing fuerte ever since the console release…but ever since i’ve got into the g1 tourneys i havent been doing so good… it just seems like i lose to alot of fireballs spammers and people who keep running away (repeat)…does it irritate any fuerte players to play against people who run away and fireball (sagats, ryus, guiles, akumas)? it irritates the hell out of me but just wandering how do any of you deal with sagat tiger knee spams and tiger shots.

i know ex guac beats tiger knee and ex dash goes thru tiger shots…but i really hate this damn matchup…i think i just get impatient and i fall into their trap. so frustrating playing with this character but its rewarding to beat (top tier) characters with fuerte (low tier character).

I love when opponents throw fireballs. Probably the worst thing you can do against fuerte. Tortilla, ultra, wall jump rsf, tostada press… EX run slide… so many options. Tiger knee will whiff over you if you do a c.lk and then you get a free throw.

If they’re seriously spamming fireballs it’s really easy to avoid. You can runaway better than they can runaway so just jump backwards a shit ton. Eventually they’ll A) come after you or B) throw a predictable fireball which means you press forward, fly off the wall, j.hp, run stop fierce if you can, or at least a s.hp, run xx slide.

Don’t use EX guac on tiger knees. Go into training mode against sagat and have him do something like low short x3, stand short into tiger knee. After the stand short you can whiff a low short and go under the tiger knee and get a throw, flipping the momentum in your favor.

Playing Fuerte online sucks.

wow thanks for the tips…the tips against sagat are helpful…as far as wall jumps im being trying to use them sparingly since most players in g1 are doing their homework and learning the fuerte matchups…(cant even do rsf well during online matches).

No RSF = do it’s next best thing: FP xx Hab dash xx Slide

yeah i quess it just depends on the connections…sometimes i can pull 3 rsf w/ slide …sometimes only just fierce…thats why i prefer local matches

This is the only time I ever use FP xx Quesadilla Bomb

Alright, guys. So I’m a Rufus main and I like to think I’m pretty competent at this game. Anyway, I decided to start messing around with Fuerte. Like any new character I want to start learning I complete all their trials. Only took about an hour and a half to complete Fuerte’s. Next step it to watch some videos of Fuerte and get a feel for how he is played so I watched some TKD videos and I was like, “ok, run away, be safe, lots of mix ups, etc.” Last step is to go through losing a bunch of matches online.

First match I get Gief and I’m like, “LAME” but it was actually a really fun match. I’ve also played a bunch more and it’s like the first time I can smile after a match. Fuerte is mad fun.

Anyway, I’m completely new to Fuerte but very aware of the game engine/mechanics etc.

What are some things I should use as basics to implement into my Fuerte game? Then how should I move forward?
What’s my best BnB after a clean j.hp/hk?
What are Fuerte’s best pokes?
