Having lived in Florida for a few years and witnessing many, many missing children reports prior to the Anthony circus, I vouch for Florida being worse for kids, too… Really bad Dept of Child Services there… Also, very little culture there aside from theme parks and other tourist traps. The weather’s the only good reason to move there.
I never thought I’d be saying Ohio had more culture and things to generally do!
No place is safe from creeps but some do tend to attract more vagabonds, drifters, and the worst slime you can think of.
The Midwest has become infamous for a few serial killers originating/living here but there is still more crime in warmer states like Florida and California. There’s also a trade-off for warmer weather climates.
The main reason I’d want to move South or West is warmer weather… I HATE the winter in the Midwest. I’m not in the worst spot to be and our winters have been comparatively mild for at least 6-8 years now BUT I still hate the ice and snow and freezing wind. IF the work materializes and is compelling enough (pays enough), I’d probably consider moving AFTER scoping out the local area and seeing how much it REALLY costs to live in some places.
People get surprised by costs-of-living (COL). Florida is a lot more expensive than most places in the Midwest. Your insurance rates are just ridiculous there. You really have to go to Chicago to see much worse in action, Midwest-wise, as far as prices/COL goes…
(Nothing beats the hell that’s Detroit… Even when Cleveland was being called “Ohio’s Detroit” – and it still is to an extent outside of the developing suburbs – it was NEVER THAT BAD…)
