Personally I just want to be able to turn up to an advertised tournament, not have to pay too much venue fees because they want to be “bigger” and hire somewhere posh or central rather than somewhere cheaper that works just as well and enter without having to even think about leagues/qualifiers ect.
Also the ability to have side tournaments and casuals in non main games is cool as well.
For me that’s part of the charm of the current FGC and I personally don’t feel it needs to change and am apprehensive about the idea of leagues taking over when it is fun as it is already.
The fact that the eSports guys keep going on about JWong getting paid as if that’s supposed to sell us on the situation is indicative of how little they understand the FGC. Start talking about top 32-64 or more all getting paid and you’ll start to gain more sympathy. Nobody other than Justin really cares how much Justin is getting paid. Maybe StarCraft is founded on weird hero worship of their top players, I dunno, but while that kind of thing is becoming unnervingly more apparent among certain segments of the FGC we’re not there quite yet.
What does people watching streams have to do with the community?

BUT They’re not taking over, holy shit. If Leagues were able to host Capcom games, It would give players an option to finally get paid, and gain More exposure/Sponsorships.

See this is where I think we differ, how many of us here actually believe gaming is something we need to be paid to do?
A prize pot at the end of a tournament is one thing, it’s cool, we all chip in our entry fees and the top 3 end up with a nice treat at the end, but to actually make a job out of it just seems, well, kind of unecessary really and I don’t see any real benifits in it for anyone other than a tiny percentage of the scene, and the leagues marketing it selling their shirts ect.
And on the flip side the risk is of leagues cannibalising the other events, even if they aren’t held on the same day it’s still possible simply because people don’t have unlimited travel/hotel budgets and have to make choices of which event to go to over another and if one is some big league thing boasting bigger prize pools and qualifiers it may potentialy draw players away from other tournaments, hurting not just the game the league was running in the other tournaments but the other games being run there which may have also been entered by people turning up for that game if they had turned up for that tournament rather than the league event.
IF I CANT GET RICH FROM PLAYING EM FANCY KUNG FU GAMES NO ONE SHOULD! NOT EVEN THOSE WHO TRAIN HARDER THAN ME. ONLY A SUCKER WORKS A 9-5 JERB.
Again the presentations of the tournaments are already on point and already has an established good atmosphere and competition.
Give me something knew that you’re gonna point out other than an abundance of sponsorships that could care two shits less about the community and last i checked G4TV actually has gotten involved a little with the community.
Just to check
Are we going under the assumptions that sponsors have no say in how things are run and that the fighting game community is not currently more “raw”, as Scoots put it, than many other league games.

Uneccesary is uneccesary even if you do erect strawmen. (And forget to knock them down)
Will the FGC fall apart because the top players are still having to work for a living and are just enjoying tournament pots as bonus income like they have been doing up until now?
Unlikely, after all we’ve all, including the top players played up until now for love of the game, without delusions of turning it into a full time paying job, and it’s lasted a fair while to say the least.
Are there acutal risks which going with leagues and taking the esports route could lead to?
From the looks of it yes, I’m not saying they are definately all going to happen, but if there is a risk than surely great caution must be taken to preserve the current FGC we know and love, even if it means our hobby stays as just a hobby, I mean what is wrong with that in the first place?
Can you stop shitting up this thread?
Yeah, top 64 players getting paid? What tournaments are these?
What does people watching streams have to do with the community? Slams head into wall Did you graduate high school?

The tournaments Keits run implement a payout system where the more people that enter, the more people receive a payout.

I see no compelling reason, especially not for that.
If we’re getting real it doesn’t matter either way whos running the topline tournaments, not really. It won’t effect most of the actual players one way or another, and it will only help the top players.
This whole ‘controversy’ is just the guys who are running things now freaking out about potential competition from outside the club.
It’s like we’re european peasants, it doesn’t matter much to us if the Bourgeoisie or the Aristocracy wins, we’ll still be out there plowing the fields.

Will the FGC fall apart, Because players who train harder are given an option to make more money?
What are the risks of a league like MLG hosting Capcom games?

we care more about players than spectators.
people understand that players often end up being spectators and that having more eyes on the FGC could, potentially, mean more players. The thing is, most of what we hear from those who push for MLG is way too based on either spectators or money for top players. If you want to pitch MLG to the FGC, you have to really debunk concerns of potential damage and give clear benefits regarding those who aren’t spectators or the top top players. To start, if MLG didn’t adopt starcraft 2, would it have significantly less players? What could sc2 have not done- besides things regarding spectator numbers and raw money- without MLG? Has MLG been responsive to the SC2 community’s desires regarding how tournaments are run? Do they still have that extended series BS, for example? Which of these answers are relevant to the FGC because the interaction between the FGC and MLG would be similar, and which are not because of differences between SC2 and fightan games?

mvc3 has been riding on sf4’s popularity? citation needed
who the hell is doing nothing
what the hell am i reading
a bunch of stuff just came out and a bunch of stuff is coming out
do you think we need a sf4-esque boost every 3 months or something? because i dont know what else we could fucking be getting right now
although, i am not sure why i bothered to post in this thread since i doubt that mlg will ever affect games i actually play significantly

You sir, are correct. MLG only wants popular games

Cannibalising none league tournaments (as I mentioned above this can be done even when scheduled on different days to try to avoid this) is the first thing that comes to mind.
There are more but those are more worst case scenario, after the above has happened things like loss of open bracket tournaments anyone can enter, possible rises in the cost of competing due to more expensive venues being used (not just venue costs, but for instance getting a hotel near a central location in a city would cost more than further out) and dropping of the games after they stop being profitable.
I think this gives a better perspective on both ends of the argument

The thing is, the average involved player loses basically nothing from MLG (and gains very little, unless there’s a huge impact from increased exposure, which I find kind of unlikely).
The real ‘interested player’:
Buys the games and plays them at home, at least some online.
Goes to local events and tournaments when they can, but can’t make every single week or every single event.
Does maybe 1 major a year, possibly more if they’re lucky enough to live within reasonable driving distance.
Is actively interested in events they can’t take part in (which is where your spectators come in)
I’d bet that’s a pretty apt description of the vast majority of people who are paying enough attention to even take part in this discussion, a big factor being ‘availability of events’.
To people like that, an eSports group getting involved has no impact, except another event that they can’t afford to actually attend, but can watch from home.

Oh, nothing to worry about now MLG won’t pick up Capcom Games, They moved on. Instead They will be working with developers that want to work with them, Which are WarnerBrother’s , and Namco.
