Not necessarily. Making health changes isn’t exactly a great way to balance and there are other factors to consider when making characters. Like you surely don’t like characters JUST because they have low health right? They might have speed, mobility, insane mixup etc and there are other ways to keep those options while balancing out other aspects of the character so it is fair.

ha, mike’s reason for not having variable health or defense is that he thinks its a poor way to balance a character.
yes, iron tager has a lot more health than anyone else, but all that does is make him take a bit longer to lose, because he is trash! (id say the same thing about mike haggar in mvc3 but with x-factor he still dies in one combo…)
old games didnt have the health difference, and while those werent perfect, they did it fine. with a new take on balancing i dont really think you need to play with health to make a character good or not to good (and it doesnt always work… phoenix has like half the health anyone else has in mvc3 and she is still pretty much the best character in the game.)

So I had 5 minutes (literally 5 minutes) so I made a quick concept of a character just for fun :D.

He’s A greedy, scientifically altered highly intelligent monkey named Darwin.
Playstyle centers around speed and agility.
Is very short and has a small hitbox.
Damage output is low but mix-up potential would be high.
Uses his cane-like tail as a long-ranged melee weapon.
Can switch sides of the screen (Cap-like backflip)
Wants to get the skull-heart and sell it for an enormous sum

I was thinking about a male character with a zip up hoodie as a living weapon. The hood part would have eyes on the side of it with teeth running along the rim of it, and teeth or claws(i’m not sure yet) would also run along where the hoodie zips up. Maybe some laid down spikes on the back of it that look like the designs on a hoodie, and small claw points at the ends of the arms. I’m not completely sure on what kind of power it would have, I would want something unique, but the first thing that came to mind was that it would generate electricity, perhaps using it to stimulate the wearers muscles making him faster thus having a fast and speedy play style, maybe even to the point that he disappears from sight and shows up on the other side of the screen. Also a grab were the strings of the hoodie grab the opponent and electrocute them after which he delivers a palm thrust. Those along with a few other base electric attacks were all i could come up with, and maybe a special were his hoodie completely closes and it’s spikes and claws grow longer and generate electricity. I plan on trying to draw it later just didn’t have time to and felt like posting.

Also, panzerfaust and le duc all the way, and big band not so much for the design but because I think his play style would be interesting.

I still want to see a normal soldier inside of Panzer’s tank.

Doesn’t LeDuc have some sort of steampunk thing going on with him?

I really like this “living hoodie weapon” concept! Totally draw and post it.

Also I’m actually excited for big band and le duc than panzerfaust (The guy screams sentinel to me)

Can’t really think of a way this character would play.

Now THAT is an interesting looking character! I’m getting serious Arakune vibes from… him? Of course this is Skullgirls, these characters all play in such bizarre and different ways, who knows what it could possibly do.

The face reminds me heavily of those Doll things from Oni.

Yo guys. Any of you remember the live stream where they were talking about DLC? It was during a Q&A session, I think. A month or so back. The guy alluded to “lots of muscles” when talking about the first character planned. Pretty sure he meant Panzerfaust.

Made a basic ideal moveset for Darwin. The range for most of his normals are the same as Viewtiful Viewtiful Joe

Strengths:
Superb ground mobility
double Jump
Superb mix-up potential
Fast walking speed
Small hitbox (reaches up to filia’s thigh)
Ground dash is fast and long ranged.
Multiple crumple moves.

Weaknesses:
Lacks a projectile
No Air Dash
Low Damage.
Must be in very close-range to be considered a threat.

At*RF - Rapid Fire. *ST - Standing, CR - Crouching

St. Light - a short-ranged RF jab
Cr. Light - a short-ranged RF jab.

St. Med - a short-ranged RF karate kick
Cr.Med - a short-ranged RF low kick ,

St. Heavy - a ground-traveling “tatsumaki”-like spin where Darwin swings his tail.
Cr.Heavy - a sliding headbutt/dash,

Launcher - Uppercut

Air.Light - a RF punch x 2.
Air Med - Aerial somersault (kirby-style)
Air Heavy - Tail flip-kick.
Air Special - Tail Slam.

Special 1 - Monkeyspeed (In air OK) - Darwin moves (teleports) either in front of the opponent or behind the opponent.
Special 2 - Monkey Wrench - A leaping command grab. When it makes contact, Darwin twists the opponent’s neck and causes a crumple.
Special 3 - Tail sweep - A long ranged low hitting OTG attack.
Special 4 - Eureka! (Charge attack). Darwin builds some meter by having a brilliant idea. Does no damage

Hyper 1 - Primal Instincts - Darwin’s movement speed increases, can pass through low durability projectiles. (still takes damage)
Hyper 2 - Pressure Point - A physical counter. Darwin squeezes a pressure point on the victim’s leg when they try to attack him. Causes a crumple

Hyper 3 - Analyze

-Darwin scientifically analyzes the situation. This causes the opponent to slow down for the next 12 seconds.

Awesome move list, although I fucking hate the idea of a fast mobile character without a projectile because then you get MVC3 Jill… which… yeah.

I think Ravid’s tweet today lends some credence to Beowulf being the first DLC character:

Seeing as he’s the most detailed (character-wise; we haven’t even seen the guy yet) of the males, I think it could be him. But who knows.

As long as the males are just as interesting as the females and aren’t all dumb brutes (LeDuc seems to already defy this trope), it’s all good.

Thats why he has Primal Instincts and a teleport. I think if he had a projectile he would be a bit OP. But I would give PI some invincibility frames so that the opponent couldn’t simply punish while he buffed.


You see. I designed Darwin to be a battery, meter builder, and an assist character.

Battery Functions
-Stack PI and Analyze to become insanely fast and mix-up opponents. (PI grants an 7 second 40% movement speed increase. In addition to faster start up on moves and reduced recovery times on them.) Stacked with Analyze which slows down opponent actions by 25%, You essentially have a character that is moving 165% speed.

-Use PI to continually buff his speed and projectile durability.

Meter-build -
use his speedy combos in conjunction with Eureka! to build meter for teammates

Assist -
Eureka meter building.
Using PI buffed mobility to increase the speed of Assists

Yes that’s one thing that worries me about potential male characters. Apart from Le Duc all the males we know of atm are huge. We have a big old muscular wrestler, an enormous steroid pumped soldier with a tank on his fist and a film noir detective hooked up to a musically themed iron lung which causes him to be about 10 feet tall and almost as wide.

I’d like to see something a little creepy and inhuman too, something more beastial/monsterlike instead of humanoid. Alex’s artstyle would definitely lend itself toward something like this too, just look at Samson.

A Shuma-Gorath or Firebrand like creature could be a viable Skullgirls addition!

Hmm… what if we got a parasite who has adapted to live on his own? That’d be pretty cool.

I really like the cyberpunk Arakune thing posted up above.

And yeah, it’d just be a shame if the males fell into stereotype traps. It should be unique takes on those stereotypes (which is what this game seems to be doing). Maybe a member of the Medici Mafia, a hitman or something? Sneaky spy-type guy?

I kinda doubt that they’ll all be huge. If you look at some of Alex’s designs he actually has some pretty cool ones (Like these).
